yeah Johnson was alright back then. It is ridiculous when people say he could hang with guys like Ali and others. He would have gotten KOed by everyone of the champs starting with Joe Louis to today, and it would be a toss up if he fought any of the one before Louis.
thanks bro, but you needn't give me a thing. tis all good.
well, with jack johnson's unforgiveable blackness, you will have your hands full for a while.
when your done with that though, pick up "jack johnson is a dandy". it's an autobiography - yes, you read right - an autobiography written by jack himself on his life. it is a little book of maybe 220 pages or so, but hey, it's jack in his own words! pics are included in the middle.
the book is out of print. i scored my copy(a second printing from 1969) off of ebay for $10. out of print, but, i think i have read a rumor that said it is coming back for another printing.
"papa jack" is another definitive on jack.
that should really satisfy everything you want to know about jack. i have read them all and still enjoy flipping through them often.
now, getting more footage of jack and his fights, that's the hard part!
btw, if you have cable and have the "versus" channel, keep an eye out for any movie entitled "kings of the ring" or something similar. it features four of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time, and jack is one of them. they play it often. there are several documentary specials that espn occasionally plays too.
well, there you have it. or most of it. believe me, you will enjoy watching and reading about him.
no prob!
actually, you are doing me a favor by boosting your boxing IQ. that boosts the scene's general IQ!
if you need any recommendations in the future for books on johnson, just find me. i have a collection of about six books purely on jack. not to mention numerous biographies and books that have chapters dedicated to him.
enjoy! hell of a read, but worth it!
:headbang:
Will do, I wanted to get you something but the shop is out of stock.
Expect something though, info greatly appreciated. :hail:

dr filth - yeah, he was respectfull to white people. he was way, way, way ahead of the times. he believed that everybody should be treated with the same respect, white, black, or otherwise.
when he opened his club, cafe de champion, he made it open to people of all races.
what a cool cat.
seriously, i could, and might, go on all day about the interesting shit i know about him. he and his situation was seriously fascinating.
I have seen tons of Johnson footage over the years. All that is available I think. Unforgivable Blackness on DVD is a must see and it really tells everything there is to know about Johnson. He was a very interesting person and what was known at the time as a sport. Which was someone who loved to party, drink, gamble, drive fastcars and chase whores around. It is said he would bang 4 women(prostitutes) a night, he said to think distant thoughts for stamina.
He was friends with Stanley Ketchel who was also a sporting fellow and they would drink together on occasion. Johnson was a master story teller and some details of his life he may have made up.

the book is better for raw info. i have both, the video and book. i am and have been somewhat boxingscene's jack johnson expert.
It is an expression. He dated almost exclusively prostitutes, but one of his wives was a wealthy Long Islander. He did give a former lover money to start a brothel and it was used by the courts to put him in jail.
oh, i know the expression. i'm an american in my mid twenties - believe me i know.
i only brought it up because i didn't know if he simply meant that jack was a smooth cat or if he actually thought that jack was a pimp.
just wanted to make it clear that he didn't pimp in case of misunderstanding. although, having been around as many "sporting women" as he was, he might as well have been. just kidding.
btw, "sporting women" - a nicer word for postitutes in the early 1900's.
Johnson had many white friends and mostly dated white women.
yes, he loved to stick it in white women
like the mexicans say " white girls are for fucking, not marrying "
yeah, wasn't really trashy so much as i bet it fucked with jeffries head during the fight. johnson is on my top 10 hw list. he was amazingly respectful to whitey considering his parents had been slaves

no, he wasn't.
he did marry, or date with a prostitute though.

he was the coolest of cats back then. he frequently changed his suits two times a day. nice suits by the way. he liked to look dapper.
he sipped champaigne from a straw.
he bought 4 or 5 cars a year.
in a time where being racist was the thing, he never held a grudge.
yeah, he was one cool customer. that's why i own half of a dozen books about him alone.
well, it wasn't really trashy. i mean, his trash talk had class. it was nothing like the shit we hear james toney spout. johnson, for the most part, was a really respectable man whithout even taking into consideration the still barbaric times in which he lived.
jack johnson - my favorite heavyweight. alongside big vitali of course.

He is an impressive fellow.
That guy would have been huge in any era.
NICE sig banner BTW, that is tight! :fing02:

I didn't realize Jack had so much charisma.
And that kind, he looked like a cool cat.

one of my favorite things about johnson was all the trash he talked while he was in the ring. when he'd hit jj jeffries in the body he'd say " how u feelin' mr. jeff?"

Johnson was a pimp. He once said he was a brunette in a blond town. I love that quote.
