I used to get in arguments with a friend of mine over this topic all the time . He was on the side that says that boxing is just two people beating eachother up, while I of of course always stuck up for it. I categorize 'sports' as such.
You score points.
You must physically and mentally train yourself.
There is a chance of physical harm.
Right now the media has ran out of new ideas and has been passing everything in sight off as a sport .
Spelling bee
Poker
Bowling
dancing
cookingGolf
All of these can be seen on Espam on any given day but I do not feel that any of them are sports . They are games and or skills but not sports .What do you define a sport as ?
Honestly, a sport is not defined by what you do. A sport can be anything- from frog licking to boxing. All a sport is a competition, governed by rules, in which people attempt to best the other and win. Anything you make into a competitive outing is a "sport".
Bingo! You nailed it. It's basically a game people play by the rules. With the emphasis on Rules which govern any sport.
Take out the rules, and it's not a sport anymore. It becomes a game of chaos or playing with abandon, like a bunch of crazy ass kids going wild.
:argue:
You must physically and mentally train yourself.
well to be fair, u need to train physically and mentally train for
Poker,Bowling, dancing and golf, anything thats considered a sport you hav to train physically and mentally, if we dont find it a sport then that is COOL with me, but you hav to be in amazin physical shape to be a dancer because my sister used to dance when she was younger and the training and the body she got was out this world, poker is a mental game, so is chess, i wouldnt call them sports tho, because i am a big closed minded fuck and i belive only boxing and MMA are sports :) lol
i have played poker proffesionaly and to win the world series it takes 10 days of playing 12 hours a day. this may not compare to the boston marathon, but it certainly requires a level of physical preparation.

Okay guys all great points and I may have to change my mind on some of these things. The main point of this was too find a way to explain to someone that boxing is more then just hitting someone. As you can see if someone turns this around and on to a sport they like then it becomes a problem. Yet they fing a ton of way too discredit boxing.

You dont PLAY boxing. But it is a sport.
Whoever said Golf is not a sport is mad.
Golf is more of a Game.
Tiger Woods is consider "One of the Greatest Athletes"
What bullshit is that?
Maybe I will call him an "athlete", but compared to other sports, he has a vagina.
I once heard a joke that goes something like this:
Look at how small a Golf ball is compared to other sports, why is that?
because it only requires small balls
Golf is a very hard game, but so is chess.
What's funny is that Tiger Woods is more popular as an athlete in the media, then say a Ice-Skater or a Gymnast, figure that one out. You here a lot of comments how they are "Girl Sports", but Golf, "oh, that is for men."
No it is not, well at least not for young men. It is usually played after you retire; you are 65 and can't do shit anymore.
A sport is any endeavour in which two or more competitors or teams are pitted against one another in a test of physical and mental skill and ability. Boxing is among the purest of sports.
I dont see how anyone can say boxing is not a sport. Any true fan knows that its more than two people hitting eachother.
Obviously the person who said this isn't a fan though. Basically they're dismissing it because they don't like it, sounds like.
Nah that's not the way he men't it. His point was that someone like Butterbean is not a athlete and thinks that anyone who can take a punch and has a little training can be a boxer, I guess. Even though i'm sure Butter is a hell of a lot more of a athlete then he looks .
I see what you're saying now. It's funny a lot of people use that same argument against MMA on this board.
A sport is an athletic competition. Boxing is a sport. When people say boxing isn't a sport what they're trying to say is it isn't fun and games, unlike most sports.
Some entertaining competitions are grouped with sports for convenience but aren't really sports (Nascar, poker, chess, etc.)

I hear a sport requires DEFENSE. If the thing your doing doesn't require defense, it isn't a sport. Try narrowing it down even more with the list you got that don't make the sports list and try to say boxing isnt' a sport.
I think running, biking, and swimming are sports though . Nascar on the other hand NO .
