I never saw it coming, UK fighters against previous contender stars and other
American fighters, incredible. I think it could become an awful affair for the uk
fighters if they all get mauled badly but at least we will get some coverage
which we get very little of here in the uk. of course there may be upsets.
So anyone else as excited as i am ? and what are your thoughts on the lineup.
Brewer is a good fighter, he even handed Sechew Powell his first defeat. Grady is just like a lot of fighters that even though theyre good, just dont have time for training, because either they work safe or they fight and maybe dont eatyeah, i agree.
brewer is pretty good and has an awkward style that would give most
fighters problems. hes the sorta guy the sport needs, better than a
journeyman but not quite elite level.

Paul Smith vs Miguel Espino should be a good fight... just have to wait to know the other fightswhen you look at all the fighters records its a pretty even matchup.
brewer is the most experienced but has most losses than the uk team combined
sounds like its gonna be a big stepup in class for most of the uk fighters
i cant wait.
ill keep adding news to this thread as i get it.

It will be, except for Alexander. The guy aint to hot but if he lands right its over and that counts for ANYBODY in or around his weight class! Yeah keep posting info man
Too be honest its still hard to say but on potential id say he cleans up in Britain at least! He COULD be a big bust tho with his stylesounds like its gonna be a big stepup in class for most of the uk fighters

THE CONTENDERS
UK vs. USA
Promoter Frank Warren and The Tournament of Contenders, in association with The News of the World and Rock Star Energy Drink, are delighted to bring The Contenders to the UK on Friday 30th March at the Metroradio Arena in Newcastle.
It's the UK versus USA in a battle for supremacy to find out who is the BEST!
The UK team comprising of seven top Sports Network boxers including Wayne Alexander, Paul Smith, Ross Minter and Anthony Small, and the American team, featuring stars of the hit US TV reality show The Contenders - Cornelius 'K9' Bundrage, Grady 'Bad Boy' Brewer and Walter '2 Guns' Wright - will fight it out for the inaugural Sugar Ray Leonard Cup.
There will be seven bouts each of 8 x 3 minute rounds duration and the side that wins the most number of bouts will be declared the overall winner and take the prestigious trophy home.
Not only will the boxers battle it out in the ring but two of boxing's modern day greats will go head-to-head outside the ring as they prepare their teams strategy to victory.
The UK team will benefit from the invaluable knowledge offered by one of the finest boxers ever to come out of this country - Barry McGuigan the Former WBA World Featherweight Champion and now a top commentator on ITV.
The American team will be coached by living boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard who won an unprecedented six world titles and was involved in epic super-fights against Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler.
In addition, boxing apparel giants Lonsdale and Everlast will get involved in the action as they will be the official outfitters for the UK and US teams respectively.
Warren said, "The Tournament of Contenders has created a worldwide audience for its show and I'm delighted to be working with Ray and Jeff Wald in promoting this fantastic event in Newcastle. The UK and US teams have a great line-up of fighters and I'm sure that we are going to see some exciting fights between them. The winners will get great exposure which will create further big opportunities in their careers as we saw with Peter Manfredo who will now challenge Joe Calzaghe for his WBO World Super-Middleweight title in Cardiff."
Leonard said, "It's a great honour to have the trophy named after me. I'm very excited about the competition and look forward to pitting my boxing brain against Barry McGuigan's. I've boxed in Britain as an amateur and know how passionate the British fans are and this is a great opportunity for them to see some great fights. This will be another extension of my legacy but we'll have to see if I'm here for another 80 years to celebrate it!"
Jeff Wald, producer of The Contenders, said, "The UK and US have a long athletic tradition like the Ryder Cup which goes back 80 years. We are delighted that this tournament will be for the Sugar Ray Leonard Cup and hope that we can continue a tradition just as long as the Ryder Cup. Ray is revered throughout the world and especially in Britain where he has thousands of fans and of course this country has a fantastic history in boxing. We are excited to be in business with Frank Warren and Sports Network and hope that this can be the start of an annual event."
Barry McGuigan, said, "The Contenders has a great reputation and I'm delighted to represent the UK team. We have some really great kids in the team who I'm sure will give it there all when there is plenty of personal pride and national honour at stake. I will also be looking forward to pitting my wits against Sugar Ray Leonard who is one of the true legends of the sport."
Tickets for The Contenders, are priced at £75 Ringside, £40 Floor seat and £25 Tier seat.
Tickets are on sale now!
lol no mate. the fights are shown delayed, one a week for eight weeks. cos there's eight fights. as far as i've heard, no second rounds - it's simply us vs uk, one night only with that night's eight fights shown over the next eight weeks.so any idea who the other 2 uk fighters and other 2 us fighters are ?
8 fights in one night, thats very unusual isnt it ?
so fighters involved will be out of action for the rest of that time due to contracts.
so it will only ely be uk vs us for the first rd of fights cause all fighters from
one side or the other may win their fights respectively.
