I was looking through the upcoming fight schedule for the next few months. There are hardly any PPV events! I guess this is good news for fans, they don't need to pay as such, just pay for the channels.
Then i got thinking, how many current boxers can headline a PPV event ?
Not many!
you have
PBF
DLH
Possibly Pacman
Klitchko
whose else can sell a PPV on their own ? (meaning average undercard fights and standard opponent)
Sad to say it, but DHL is the real PPV money maker of today. Working for the cable biz, I recall employees forcibly scheduled to work mandatory overtime just because of a DHL fight.
Not only that, DHL is one of the few (if not the only) current fighters that earns 8 figure purses (US dollar$).
there are a TON of extremely talented Prospects that will more then likely be PPV stars within a few years.
JOHN DUDDY
ANDRE BERTO
JOEL JULIO
EDISON MIRANDA
ALLAN GREEN
JOEL JULIO
etc,etc,etc
Damn! I guess big boxing fights on abc is long gone. :nonono: , For now
So far there are 6 PPVs for the year
Mar 17 – Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Juan Manuel Marquez
May 5 – Floyd Mayweather vs. Oscar de la Hoya
Jun 9 – Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito
Jun 23 – Joe Calzaghe vs. Jermain Taylor
Jul 21 – Bernard Hopkins vs. Winky Wright
Nov - Jose Luis Castillo vs. Ricky Hatton
The middle four are all right after each other
I think I might spend my $50 on Cott-Margarito instead of the Oscar fight. Its SO much less significant but it should be a much better fight. I hate to invite friends over who don't watch much boxing and then have them watch what Floyd did to Baldomir where it was one-sided and boring as hell. I have to think about the PBF_ODH card some more.
Most of the time, the fights that end up being on PPV are lousy. I am a big supporter of boxing, but I and many others hate shelling out $50 for fights that don't end up living up to the hype. I know it's boxing and you never know what might happen, of course, but for $50 and the result is a crap/boring fight, it hurts the sports image. I hope DLH vs. Mayweather Jr. will not fall under this category since it's getting hyped up so much; the outcome could very well help the sports state today.
Thier are a lot of PPVs. Like were RJJ Holyfield and cotto fight sometimes. I dont know what it is but when i think of PPV its HBO ONLY. Show time doesnt even put out to many anymore.

The fact is most of the fighters mentioned are just about done !
Even PBF and DLH are just about done
What does Boxing have to look forward to in terms of PPV superstars ?
Cotto is entertaining and has an entertaining style of fighting. He was able to get good buys when he fought Paulie. I think he will have some very good ppv sales especially when he steps up and goes against other established champions at WW i.e. Mosley, Margarito, PBF, Hatton(if he ever goes back to WW).
