We're missing what happened between the Cherifi fight and what made Tito retire, whether it was not getting another shot at Hopkins or just saying the hell with it. If he was retired for one day, 3 months, 3 months and 2 weeks, he was retired. What happened was that Tito finally watched the rape he got from Hopkins.

if tito wanted hopkins so badly, he could have fought him even after SAYING he was retired, it is not like he had a year layoff the reason the rematch did not happen is that tito (or someone in his team) did not want to fight hopkins. if it was because he knew he would lose or because he was "retired" is not official. Man I just saw this fight all over and I couldn't believe how sluggish, out of shape and unprepared Trinidad looked. I heard Don King and Trinidad tried to get a rematch after Tito's fight with Cherifi, but instead of taking the much bigger money, Hopkins fought guys like Carl Daniels, Morrade Hakkar and William Joppy. I heard Hopkins had "legal problems" with DK and therefore never made the fight because of that reason. Turned down a huge pay day for "legal problems"? Does anyone know what really happened? I mean, a guy as smart as Hopkins is doesn't seem to pass up on that opportunity for stupid reasons. Yeah...no He was'nt sluggish he just wasn't as good as Hopkins and Tito never wanted anything to do with Hopkins after that fight.

to summarize you said trinidad said he wanted to fight hopkins after the cherifi fight (may 2002) i gave you a link from an article, from a puertorican paper, from aug 2002, in which it is reported that hopkins flew to puerto rico to call out tito. tito's father said no thank you. this happens in aug 24, 2002. 3 months and 2 weeks after tito said he was having a rematch with hopkins. you say the article is irrelevant, bcos tito was retired by then. I say that 3 months and 2 weeks of inactivity is not called retirement in a time where championship caliber fighter fight two times a year, three at most.

Getting off topic a bit, I remember Tito calling out Roy Jones after the Joppy fight, I think it was. Tito was the man, but fighting the Jones of that time would have been crazy. Tito at middle always looked a bit out of place for me. He is good there, but cant beat the best, tho. I still cant figure out the Winky fight...not one lead right that I can remember. I'm not saying he would have beat Winky...but to be shut out and dominated like he did was unacceptable, imo.
