This may not overwhelm you with surprise, but I dropped the name Wladimir Klitschko to a college classroom yesterday without it being recognized by one person. I was elaborating a passage from David Hume when I referred to my having seen Wladimir Klitschko balance a dollar bill in the air on German television. I mentioned the incident a second time a few minutes later, at which point I stopped and said "How many of you know who that is?", only to receive blank and disappointed faces. (Of course 75% of them were busy trying to get a look at my cock, but that's another story :boobies: ). I said "He's only the heavyweight champ, but I guess no one cares about that anymore" and then continued about my business.
That is all.

which college are you teaching at and what subject?
i bet though the kids knew that Audley Harrison is the most technical boxer of them all.

That's a shame. Wladimir is a very intriguing figure who deserves more notice.
I admire him tremendously for many reasons, most of which is his world view.
He's a good fighter to boot.
I also admire you KayJay; for having the good sense to do something for a living that includes having contact with young minds, and behinds. Props.
It wouldn't matter if they looked like a young Cary Grant, people are just not going to buy the Klitschko's personalities. There would only be a wider audience if they made a few front page headlines rather then the back ones. There's just nothing there to really get excited about.
Wade went to wake forest.
Bode Miller - alpine skier
Sasha Cohen- Borat aka Ali G
Apollo Anton Ohno - Short Track speed skater
Demarcus Beasley- Soccer Player
Gary Kasparov- Don't know????
LOL Wake Forest??? No, he went to Marquette and lost to my Louisville Cardinals. Actually went 1-1 with us in his last year. I have awesome youtube clips of those games.
Wlad is a good looking guy too. There was an exchange student from Russia I was tutoring in the high school a few weeks ago and when I askd her about Wlad, she said "oh I know him, he's so hot!"
The girls really dig him. Problem is, no one's seen him here. He needs to appear in a movie or something.

....There is a huge story there with the Klits and I can't believe it hasn't been jumped on by mainstream media. The whole brotherly connection, the charity work, the domination of the heavies, etc. etc. It's a great story that ends with them coming to America and becoming household names if they ever fucking played it out. If the Corrie Sanders incident never took place then it probably would have happened.
Sanders gave Wlad an angle with the public. He had a fall and he's gotten up. He'll never be Muhammed Ali but he's got all kinds of angles. I stay in bed a few extra minutes in the morning sometimes to listen to NPR, and it struck me that they should be doing a special on the Klits. That way I'd have the other snobs at Starbuck's Sunday mornings (I mean ones other than me) asking me if I'd heard of these Ukranian guys.
I don't understand the 'no charisma' complaint. I mean he's not hip-hop, but he has more charisma in a certain sense than Tyson could dream of. Wlad is a smart fucker, and I mean K-Dogg smart. He speaks a half-dozen languages (better German than most any non-German - hab' ich Recht, Zerwas?), hee's educated, politically aware, etc.,. Maybe his English is a too Slavic, but he should be doing card tricks on Letterman and the Tonight Show.
I don't care really, so long as HBO shows the fights, but the obscurity of our little boxing world doesn't make sense to me.
i dont think this is any kind of deal
a lot of people dont have more than a passing interest in sport(s)
people who dont know who wlad and vitali are also probably couldnt tell you much about anyone but the biggest stars...
people love dwayne wade of the miam heat, but not many of them know where he went to school
most people wouldnt know the names of many people in the non-major sports
how many responses would you get if you threw out some names like....
bode miller, sasha cohen, apollo anton ohno, demarcus beasley, gary kasparov
If a champ emerges in the next six or eight months (let's not argue the boxing in this thread), the promoters need to get ESPN and 60 Minutes to run specials. Shouldn't 60 Minutes have already done a special on the Klitschkos and their charity work? That would have appealed to a certain adult demographic that does not mainly watch fights. ESPN can reach the kids.

Kids are fucking dumb these days. No one in the elementary school class I subbed had heard of the Doors or the Rolling Stones. Even if you'd never heard them at that age, you should at least know the names. I mean that means their parents likely don't even listen to those bands, which is upsetting and stupid.
Kids these days listen to shit like the song Fergalicious. Computer fucking generated sounds, not even real instruments. Fucked up.
And do you know how fucking creepy and unsettling it is to hear 4th grade girls singing that song? That ain't nothing I wanna hear coming outta anyone under 17's mouth.
I don't even wanna bring up boxing in class. Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't know Ali or even someone like Holyfield The kids all love wrestling and John Cena. I didn't even know who this Cena guy was until I started subbing. From kindergarten to 12th grade, everyone knows about him. I bet even the highschoolers think he'd take a prime Tyson in a fight.
I wish boxing would get more TV coverage. I watch fights on Versus and ESPN/EPSN classic sometimes, but I would really love for boxing to be as popular as it used to be.
You know whats even worse? I know yall find it hard to believe.
I asked a Grade 12 High School Exercise Science class who "Muhammad Ali" was, and no one knew..one guy raised his hand and said "I think he was a boxer".
I nearly shat my pants.
That's my field but not mainly what I teach. I was substituting for a physicist who leads a seminar on scientific reasoning.
As I write this I'm also perusing an article on 'Hume's Newtownianism'
are you left handed or ambidextrious
I know, I know, but let's leave all that for the other threads.
So you think he has a personality problem? Explain. This is what I want to find out in this thread, not the technicalities concerning 'titleholder' and 'champ'. There are tons of threads about that.
Well in terms of generating a wider audience, a sports star has to have more than just ability in the sport he or she competes in, as I'm sure you know. Sports stars in general are just not as charismatic as they used to be, and this, in effect has made a lot of them basically nonentities outside the fans of that particular sport.
Take someone like Pete Sampras, he was pretty much as good as it got in terms of ability in his sport, but he just never seemed to have any personality. Compare that to someone like John McEnroe, and it's little wonder why McEnroe was/is much more well-known. That's just one example out of many.
There's absolutely no doubt about it, that if the Klitschko's had more outgoing peronalities, and where making some front pages instead of back pages, they would be more well-known. Although Mike Tyson was a prodigy and animal in the ring; I just can't see him ever being as well known without all the other antics. Same goes for Ali and many others.

That is sum sad shit! Its the same here if I roll into the pub and ask who da champ I get Lewis? Holyfield? Dunno man!
Its pathetic! Most know Chuck Liddel tho if thats significant?
I think your friends are nerds...thats the problem:owned:
No. They were not my friends, to start. :owned:
They were my students for an aftternoon.
Secondly the whole category 'nerd' is an anachronism. Leap out of the 80's. Oh wait, you probably don't know what 'anachronism' means. :duh:
Don't fuck with me :owned:
who cares :boxing: what those geeks think. They probably more interested in watching Chess or Golf. I speak boxing all the time w/ppl in Cleveland and they all pretty much know there is no single HW champ but a bunch of them and they all know the Klitschko's. I think it's yer demographics. Philosophers and Poindexters speak of World of war craft and there body fungus collections....not boxing!
Funny answer money. I'm a poindexter pugilist, part-time poet and permanent pussy-pounder.
Seriously, you think if I asked in the learning challenged class they'd know? I mean these were smart kids, sure.
He's not actually the heavyweight champ though, although to be honest, even if he was undisputed champion, I don't think it would make a huge amount of difference. TV/media exposure, along with personality, is just something that he hasn't got/have in abundance.
