I watched this fight again recently. I've seen it about 50 times.
This most recent viewing was different however.
I had just finished watching dozens of other Tyson fights.
What struck me as incredibly odd this time - was that Tyson was not lethargic, Tyson was not unfocused, and Tyson was landing some VERY heavy shots on Holyfield. Evander was taking Tyson KO punches no problem.
Mainly, I'm wondering what kind of shit Evander was on that night. I know he wore Mike down to win.
But how was Evander taking those fucking shots!?!?!
Ok, just read the whole thread. People who say shit like "Holyfireld was just great" need to actually study boxing!
Holyfield was great. No doubt. But HOW Tyson was beaten was the question asked. Holyfield was very tough, knew how to defend against Tysons one dimensional single punch attacks, and knew he had to push Tyson back, take control and not let Tyson get on top like he was used to.
Whoever mentioned the Seldon fight...thats a fucking joke! Seldon shit himself and wanted out. Lots of Tysons opponents like Golota, Norris, Francis, Bruno, just absolutly shit themselves and were beaten by fear.
Holyfield was very smart and well prepared. Tyson believed his own hype, and thought old man Holyfield would fall down like his other opponents since coming out of prison.
BP,
I think you have this one in hand.
Seldon was petrified. I believe that was me who mentioned him..
You're right..
It was a pitiful glancing shot - there could have been some overracting.
That's all speculation of course.
Holyfield absorbed some good good shots. Tyson's power was the same.
Tyson knocked men out with the shots he hit Holy with..

Im sure this has been said before but...
1. Tyson didnt throw to the body.
2. Tyson was throwing single shots. Not combinations.
3. Tyson was predictable, Holyfield knew wen to counter Tyson.
4. Tyson was a one dimensional fighter, with no game plan, no corner to help him really, and after being knocked down in the 6th he was mentally beaten.
I thought Tyson's best round was the 5th, in which he threw some combos, went to the body, and Holyfield didnt respnd with anything because he felt those shots.
A younger pre-prison Tyson would have done that from the first round.
that hook elbow shot you see in that famous picture is from the louis fight if im not mistaken... its the one where you can see marcianos elbow full flush into the guys face right?
Could be ....not sure right now

What I remember was, and I haven't seen the first fight but twice......was an in fighting clinch war won by Evander for rounds...and Mike getting pushed back. Then I remember a body combination and then Mike biting Evander's ear. The fight stops momentarily and Evander jumps up and down....Mike spits out the ear and when the fight commences...the two start throwing wild fucking punches untill the stoppage.
Both guys lost their composure and Evander obviously deserved to win the fight.
What a fucking war though.

last time i checked it was his vaunted right hand that was dubbed "suzy-q"
you are right my bad ....but he knocked out walcott and a lot of others with a elbow/hook...no hold on that hook was the suzyWalcott of course lost his title having met the 'Suzy Q' courtesy of 'The Brockton Blockbuster' Rocky
Marciano's suzy- q punch was nothing but a hook followd with an elbow . Yet no one ever discredits his ko rec . Elbows are a part of boxing just like a spit ball is a part of baseball . It's against the rules but if you can get away with it why not use it .

Tyson vs Bowe in 96 or 97 would have been interesting. I mean tyson was biting ears and losing to holy while Bowe was too busy getting his butt whooped by golota.
The Bowe that was dropped by Holyfield in the 3rd fight woud have been ko'd by Tyson . Bowe from the 1st Holy fight would have gave him some trouble but could have still been beat by Mike .
It's not that he was so far past his prime or that he was bad at that point . It's more of a matter of HOW GOOD he was at his peek. Just think of how Tyson came straight out of prison overweight and still could beat all but 2 of the best heavyweights of all time . By the time of the Lewis fight he was far far far past his prime and still took a hell of a lot of punishment... says a lot about how good he really was .

Excellent point.
And you can be sure both Holy and Tyson were using em'...
Fighters have their own justice system.
same said for Tyson using the elbows

I thought the same thing the first time I saw that fight. I was amazed with some of the shots Holyfield was taking. It's been awhile since I've seen the fight but at some point, I think Tyson hit him with an uppercut with full force and Holyfield was barely fazed. I'm sure Tyson was thinking, "Oh, shit" when that happened.
There you go, Jason!
That's what I'm claimin'.
I remember the uppercut. Holyfield's whole body shook.
Tyson also hit him with some vicious left hooks and straights...
It was unbelievable. Every time I watch it - it get's crazier.
