This is a great movie to end the series. To me this is Rocky #5. The real Rocky #5 sucked but this one was really good. You'll be cheerin for the italian stallion. And when the Eye of the Tiger music hits, you can't help but feel good in your theatre seat. Trust me it's a movie worth watchin.
The movie works a lot on his character. The fight was pretty cool too. With the whole HBO feel to it, prefight almost felt as if you actually ordered the balboa-dixon fight on hbo/ppv.
I'm going to see this movie tonight. I read all the reviews and I think I'm gonna love it.
I really loved 1 the best of them all. Just the fact that Stalone wrote it and he was flat broke and it really showed thru in his character as to how Rokcy Balboa really was, and it definitely deserved the oscar it won.
Actually for me the best line of the movie was classic Larry Merchant: " Why are they calling it an Exhibition, because they couldn't call it an Executions..." Larry crack me up!! That was vintage Merchant!!
The movie is a tear-jerker.
The fight scene I thought was more realistic than all of them or most (although that is not what its about). There was more defense and the end of round flurries were there. I won't go into detail though, go watch and see for yourself.
Thanks, I'll go see it before I find out too much...
If you loved the original and fell in love with the character and his life....you're going to love this movie.
Definetly Go See It!
Ehhh, not exactly; but I need to tell you this.....the movie is not really about the fight, not mainly anyway.

So basically it looks like an HBO broadcast with Rocky's typical no-defense style of boxing and who can take the most punishment wins the fight.

To me, II still owns the best fight scene. The one in this one added a new dimension becaus it was shot with a video camera apparently, so it has that HBO feel.....to say nothing of the commentary.
On a side note, I never would have thought Larry Merchant would have such a hard time playing himself.

Although, I loved Rocky IV, because Drago seemed invincible and it was interesting to see how Rocky's training and "blood n guts" attitude was able to overcome this, I don't like the boxing scenes in the Rocky movies because they're so damn fake and far from what really happens in a boxing match.
Ok, so the question is, do the fight scenes look more realistic than previous Rocky movies or are they the same Rocky taking unrealistically large amounts of power punches to the head and coming back like nothing happened?
No spoilers please.:fing02:

Now I'm definitely never going to watch this movie.

Easily the best fight scene of all the movies, but I guess that's to be expected when you have a real boxer in there and Stallone, who's not afraid to take punches. Plus it's the 2000's. I loved every minute of the fight.

Damn fellas...
I liked most of the Rocky series, have a standup poster of him in my room (signed). And saw Rocky Balboa the day it came out. But be real here, the movie was mediocre. Stallone is not a great actor and the first half of the movie was kinda slow, and some of the plot really didn't have much to do with anything...For instance whats with the ghetto girl alwasy showing up? Anyways ther are more examples but I don't want to spoil stuff.
BUT - it is "Rocky" - meaning if you have any kind of attachment to the character (as I do), it is a must see. But c'mon some of you guys are saying you were going to cry...? It wasn't THAT emotional. It was just more of a nostalgic (sp) feeling to watch the movie. It was a GREAT way to end the movie, and it's nice to see old characters back. It is still worth seeing and I enjoyed it. But be real guys, it was not GREAT acting, and the whole training and fight lasted like 15 minutes combined..
But, still worth seeing.
The ghetto girl was symbolic...not a major point; but symbolic. I am dying to get into an analysis of this movie and why it was great; but I don't want to ruin it for those who haven't seen it. I suppose whether you liked it or not boils down to what you look for in a movie or what defines a good movie for you.
Personally, IV was the worst in the series for me. It was a bunch of patriotic bruhaha with a touch of "we can all change" in the guise of a really long music video. Hated it. And V wasn't much better, if at all. This one was a return to form, this one was a continuation of a story and it was more human than comic book in nature. That's why I loved it...and that's as in-depth as I'll get into at this time.
I've seen about an hour of it. Will finish viewing it probably Sunday. I have to agree with the thread starter. It is indeed a very good film. Stallone is an impressive writer/actor. Reviewers and people in general see action stars as being crap actors, but Stallone is a decent actor. No doubt. One reviewer claimed the film captures the heart and emotion of the first Rocky film and he is spot on. Give it a go if you get the chance.
see that's the thing with Rocky movies. they appeal to everybody whether you care about boxing or not. that first movie won so many awards, including best picture, because of it's character development. I mean shit it had the least fighting of any of the movies, yet it took home all the awards. if you watch that first movie and don't fall in love with Rocky's character, you're definitely in the minority. the new movie does a great job of bringing that guy back.
and of course if you don't like all the personal stuff, then you got 3 and 4, which have great action-packed fights. last night, the entire Louisville basketball team went to see the movie together. I mean that says something about the series to me when you got a bunch of guys like that going out to see Rocky instead of Friday part 4 or barbershop 8.
Damn fellas...

we'll have to agree to disagree. I loved the movie. I think you might be right about the nostalgia thing however. I grew up with Rocky and this movie brought us back to the roots of the character and got away from the MTV type versions like the #3-#5 sequels.
Out of curiosty, how old are you? I've found that younger audiences like the 3rd and 4th sequels becuase of the "action" and the older farts like me like #1,2 and now R.B.

Agreed. I saw it last night and recommend it to anyone. Stallone really recaptured the Balboa character and gave him the "weight" of all the years since the original movie. It's the first time since the first film that I remember Sly actually acting.....and he did a damn good job. The script is also very well written...powerful stuff in places.
If I hadn't been with my boys I might have damn near cried in a couple of spots. Great movie...see it.
good analysis..i cried like a little school girl. I loved the movie. I can now go to my grave and never think about Tommy Morrison acting ever again. :)
