I've been watching some of Hamed's old fights recently
Clearly he hit very hard for his size.
Why was he able to hit so hard?was it due to his thighs?
Hames surprised his opponents by hitting guys at times they werent expecting it. From Strange angles and out of nowhere. He hit very hard but the fact that most of his opponents never saw it coming also helped.
Could you guys clarify what you guys consider skill and what you consider talent because I'm getting confused here. For me these are the definitions.
Skill: schooling and boxing knowledge i.e. Toney and Hopkins are very skillfull fighters
Talent: physical ability often natural but nurtured to a fine point. Speed, power, reflexes and strenght. i.e. RJJ great talent, Zab given ability.
My statement remains.
Pac isnt in Hamed's league as far as skill goes. Are you disputing this?
I am, although it's a difficult call.
I see your point, but I can't get my head around it.
I think Pac would murder Hamed, but having said this, I see where you're coming from in terms of skilfullness. I think I need to forget the bit about Pac murdering Hamed and just focus on the skill bit...
Ian
Pac's not in Hamed's league?
Fucking hell...you just made yourself the laughing stock of boxingscene.com.
Only way Pac isn't in Hamed's league is because Pac is ten or eleven leagues above him.

Very good post. I'll look again at Hamed, and also PBF/Judah, try and make sense of what you just said.
How do you rate De La Hoya and Morales against Hamed, Judah, Pac and Floyd physically?
Ian
Ian
Look at the PBF/Judah fight its a good one to judge how fast Judah is. You can see he is countering PBF and appears just as fast if not faster in the early rounds. I just wanna stress I'm not saying who the better fighter is, just the pure raw physical talent.
Which Hamed fights have you seen?
Pretty much all his fights from Hardy to Barrear, I didn't see his last fight with Calvo in full just some highlight clips. I have a friend who fights in UK and he brings me back tons of Video's and now DVD's of fights that I wouldn't normally see here in the states. BTW he is also training under Graham.
Soto is a dirty fighter who constantly clinched, hit after the bell in about 8 of the 12 rounds and never listened to referee's instructions. He used headbutts and lowblows and had a point deducted for it. He wasn't in Hamed's league as far as skill goes and neither is Pac for the record. So he had to do something didn't he? He couldn't deal with the power and speed so he tried to wrestle. Watch any other Hamed fight and tell me if it was Hamed who was wrestling or Soto, because I have seen his whole career start to finish and Hamed never uses dirty tactics on anyone.

Cool, I just respectfully disagree. I think Pac is the much better fighter even against a priime Hamed I just dont think he was physically more talented.
Hamed was able to generate a lot of power with punches that should'nt have had power based on the angles he was throwing at i.e. lead upper cuts thrown off his back foot. He had great upper body dexterity and tremendous reflexes.
To me its similar to Zab vs PBF. Zab is probably more talented than PBF but PBF is the more skilled. Zab showed that he has at the very least equal speed to PBF and we know he has more power but PBF has complimented his talent with tremendous skill.
Hamed and Pac to me is very similar to that. Pac to me is probably slightly less physically talented but developed into a much more soundly skilled fighter than Hamed ever was.
Props

Barrera said Pac didn't hit as hard as Hamed? That's strange....considering that he got his ass planted to the canvas by Pac while Hamed barely touched him. Pac is at 130 now and he's pretty much all muscle.
And the reason why people hate Hamed is coz he's arrogant, he's cocky, he thinks he's handsome, I hated they way he fought Soto - which was a complete joke and more like a wrestling match than a boxing match.

Sorry,
I meant to put how I don't agree Hamed is anything close to Pac's physical talent. Hamed was quick and savvy, but about three leagues down from Pac. Pac would have wiped the floor with Hamed. Pac is so much more physically talented than Hamed.

Thanks, but could you please expand on what you dont agree with Pac's physical talent in what way? Do you think he is more physically talented than Hamed or less so?

I disagree with you about Pac's physical talent, though I stand by your right to opinionate.

I never understood why he gets hated so much. People who have seen more than 3 fights of Naseem Hamed know what he is about. So that disqualifies perhaps 90% of the board. Its the ones that go back and watch his circa 95 fights that realise how much of a special talent he was.
Anyway, to answer the question, he got his power from his technique and from his legs. He didnt have much on top, as George Foreman says, but when it comes to the size of his legs they were similar to that of a middleweight. If you ask his sparring partners and professional opponents they may even tell you the same thing. Barrera himself said Hamed hit harder than Pac and Morales, yet he didnt really take a decent shot other than 2 consecutive over hand rights, straight on the button in their fight. The rest were nothing compared to what Hamed delivered to Kevin Kelley, Augie Sanchez, Tom Johnson, Daniel Molina, Manuel Medina etc etc.
I spoke to Ross from RossBoxing about this and he said he went to go and see Hamed one time when he fought a few years back, and said that the minute you watch him you can just tell he has been trained to tear people apart with his power. He gets his whole weight behind his shots and is a natural in the sense that he knows how to transfer the little weight he has, onto a target and multiply the damage caused by delivering the shots with a lot of speed. Remember also a shot you dont see is the shot that hurt the most, and Hamed's shots were from unusual angles. Like when an opponent is waiting for an jab and they get a lead right, it throws them off. However, instead of a straight right, Hamed skips straight to the lead uppercut, and often it caught opponents off guard.
Great post. Technically fantastic.
Shame Hamed never got tested by anyone good other than Barrera, though.
Ian
Hamed was one of the most physically talented boxers to have fought in recent years. His physical talent is undeniable, tremendous speed, reflexes and power.
I dont think his power was over-rated its just that he hits guys from such weird angles that they often didn't expect the punch and didn't see it coming. You know the old saying, "The punch you dont see hurts the most".
Against a prime tough well schooled fighter (Barrera) Hamed wasn't able to land multiple flush shots but if he would've landed as many on Barrera as he did on Machine Gun Kelly then Barrera would've been in trouble too.
Pac, couldn't finish off JMM but we dont question his power, which is undeniable. Take away that first round and Barrera vs Hamed is very similar to Pac vs JMM. However Pac has evolved and now is a much more balanced fighter today than he was when he fought JMM.
Hamed to me is of equal physical talent with Pac being humble enough and discplined enough to know he needed to develope his skills more and not totally rely on his talent.
*PS I hated Hameds antics and was happy as all hell when he lost to Barrera.
Great post.

Kevin Kelley
Fuck off! Kelley fought no-one good until Hamed, and got beat by anyone good after that. Kelley's pseudo-greatness came after he got it kicked by Hamed. Kelley went down three times in the Hamed scrap, as did Hamed. Couple o' bums scrapping it out together!
