Folks
I sit in pubs lots and discuss boxing. Whenever anyone asks me who the greatest boxer ever is, I'm always inclined to answer "Oscar De La Hoya". Am I miles out, or just deluded.
Don't send me any smart answers or bitchy messages, this is an intelligent forum, remember. I only put this message up for discussion...

Folks
Further to the original thread I posted a couple of days ago - I'd never seen De La Hoya - Gatti until this morning. Holy shit, De La Hoya was so shit hot that day. It reinforces what I said about the man's greatness. Not the greatest ever, granted (and thank you all for your input)...but not far off...

I agree with you. DLH is my favourite fighter. If not the greatest fighter of all time i'd have to say he's atleast the greatest fighter of my time.
and also its good to see a good discussion on here without somebody making a point then other people coming on an ripping it to shreds for no reason other than they've got a different opinion.
Hopefully we will see DLH at his best on may 5th and get to see how Mayweather Jr deals with his biggest test to date.

De La Hoya is truly an excellent fighter, although I have to admit that he got robbed aganst "Sugar" Shane Mosley. I saw this fight to pay-per-view at my sister's place a number of years back and I even had the presence of mind to score this particular fight. I saw the final outcome 118-116 in favor De La Hoya, but the judges scoring this fight sure as hell didn't. Here was my scorecard:
DE LA HOYA 10-10-10-10- 9-10-10- 9-10-10-10-10 - 118
MOSLEY 9-10- 9-10-10- 9-10-10- 9-10-10-10 - 116
One judge scored the final seven rounds in favor of Mosley while another scored the final six in Mosley's favor. The end result was De La Hoya was screwed and he wound up losing the junior middleweight title on part of some rather biased scoring.
Thats a fight i missed due to being totally pissed! Saw the 1st 6rounds and crashed out! My Drunk eyes had Oscar Dominating but then i missed the Mosley cum back!

Everybody has their own opinions, even publishers who make up p4p lists have controversial opinions, you need to mention right away why you think he's the all time greatest.

Id say u were really wrong but Oscar is the shit! And uve done urself a big favour not saying Oscar IS the greatest!
Ray's footwork was fucking crazy.
He didn't have to bounce everywhere like a rabbit. He was always on his toes absorbing the shock of a punch. That little jump rope routine is one of the most impressive things I've seen in a training video.
I don't care about speed in that exercise. Did you see how coordinated that guy was? That's insane, the greatest.
Thats those Tap dancing feet! #1 For sure in my mind!

YES.
But not deluded.
Send me that video. ^^^
I'd rate Oscar somewhere close to Roy probably, both high up. It's hard to say because there have been so many boxing greats in history. Given that Oscar started at 130, it's easier to forgive close fights vs Sturm and a KO loss to Hopkins, who is himself a top 3 middleweight of all-time in my opinion.

You're miles out but not deluded.
He's in my view one of the greatest fighters of all time (top 25) perhaps.
Hi
I respect your opinion and your viewpoint, and I respect you more for not badmouthing me. I still stand him in high ground, though...
Ian
I agree with Knives. Ray Robinson should arguably be #1. In fact, you could rate a handful of fighters over ODH. Unfortunately, most of those fighters you can rate ahead of him fought in an era before television and even radio broadcasts of fights. But I'm with Knives...I rank Sugar Ray Robinson #1.

I've posted this video before, but it captures and illustrates the greatest fighter of all time in the ring. There's really no argument because achievement wise, it's really not close. But I will say Oscar has done things for the sport that nobody really has in a long time. That's for sure.
