Terry Norris

Is it me or does Norris look like Keenan Ivory Wayans? Ha, yea with the baldy he def resembled him.

I just can't go for fighters who routinely do some of the nasty things Norris did. He definitely had speed and so forth but not on Roy's level. Norris should have learned how to keep his chin tucked more and think about defense. Then he might have beaten Jackson. He was taking Jackson to school, then that one right hand fucked his whole world up. That was a sensational one punch KO right there. Perhaps the mot punishing first round KO was when Norris went out there and beat the shit out of John Mugabi. Is it me or does Norris look like Keenan Ivory Wayans?

He was always on Don King's big cards, but never the main event. He was awesome, everything you describe, and a very mean fighter - he was one of those fighters that you felt genuinely wanted to hurt his opponents. I was looking forward to him challenging Toney when his contract with King ran out, after the Toney/Tiberi fight he was calling Toney out a lot I remember and I tipped him to beat the shit out of Toney at the time (ofcourse, that was before Toney put in that ridiculously good performance against Barkley). But then he signed another contract with King..

Ive only seen a handfull of Norris fights but i like what ive seen, His main problem seems to be his chin but that added to the excitement! He had all the tools and imo is under rated, that being said ive only seen like 4 fights and a bunch of highlights!

I don't remeber Norris having troubles with Daniels. Reid did not have the Norris hook or the make miss make em pay approach Norris did. When Waters hit Norris when he was down I had to laugh cause Norris had done it so much. Wasn't it Daniels who beat him? No my bad, I'm thinking of Simon Brown, who stopped him on some hail mary shit.

Norris was the perfect offensive machine, he had crushing power in both hands but he tended to let his defense get by him like a Joan Guzman. He was in for some exciting stuff all the time because of that and his less than sturdy chin. The best round you will ever see is the second with Troy Waters, that was absolutely phenomenal. I have to agree with Scrappy that Terrible Terry was one of the most complete fighters I have ever seen. His Temper was also his other problem and he punched alot of guys when they were down and could have been disqualified more. He bounced back from bad losses and had great will. He called out Chavez cause JC was P4P the best at the time. Remeber Norris only fought at about 150lbs most of the time himself and was too small for middleweight.

Settle down my man, I recognized Terry as an excredibly gifted fighter, with that said his talent was such that I find myself disappointed at some of his accomplishments because I expected more. Do you realize how much time he spend calling out the 140 pound Julio Ceasar Chavez? In my opinion he was always matched carefully and there is usually a reason for that. (chin) Terry could never of beaten a prime Mike McCallum or a prime Julian Jackson. Had he of stepped up to where alot of the action was at middleweight he would have been murdered. Instead he chose to fight at his 154 weight class and even below it. I was a huge Terry fan and loved watching him fight, with that said he had limitations that I refuse to ignore. No settling needed was just tryna answer your questions. Norris chin was definitely flimsy. However I don't think his chin was even considered questionable until after JJ loss cuz he woulda never been thrown in there with him at age 21 had someone knew about his soft beard. I would agree that he appeared to be matched carefully, but what major fights do you think he coulda gotten at the time? McCallum was fighting middleweight and his potential against JJ is up to speculation...he looked to be controlling the fight until the one punch bomb sent him to the Wonka factory.

Norris had the talent; he just never really got the opportunity to prove how good he was....and those criticisms of his big name opponents are legitimate. Mugabi, Leonard, Curry, Taylor, Blocker, Brown, Pettway.....how many of them were not comming off a loss or past their best? The best he fought was Jorge Castro and Paul Vaden; both "good" fighters and close to their primes. I'm not saying Terry doesn't deserve some accolades; but Mugabi was long shot, Leonard was 34 and hadn't really looked good against a quality opponent since Hagler, Curry was far past his best days, Taylor was too small and you know he was never the same after Chavez, Blocker had just been blitzed two fights before by Trindiad, and Pettway was long in the tooth. Terry had the talent; but I think he had either bad management or Don King never cared enough about him to put him in with bigger names like Trinidad or Nunn for instance. It's just as shame, cause I think he had the ability.

"If you could take a good punch" you had a chance against him? If you can take a good punch you have a chance against almost anybody! Thats hardly criteria to gauge his potential against someone. The first Brown fight was a fluke, he was knocked out by a punch to the back of his head. Even though Terry bent down low, at the ref's discretion that could have potentially even been ruled a NC. He got DQed against Santana for the same rabbit punch. But the nitpicking of great fighter's records is another thing that continues to baffle me by some boxing fans/critics. Either "this guy was too old", "that guy was shot", "this guy had no skills". Was every single guy Terry fought a world class opponent? No. But what fighter only fights world class opponents every time out? Nobody...Looking at the good, bad or average competition Terry DID face and seeing how he manhandled most of them is enough for me to give credit where credit is due. He had very good wins against Curry, Brown in the rematch, Castro, tough guys like Buster Drayton and Carl Daniels. I love Terry too but you are overrating his ass big time. You brought up his chin...do you realize how brittle it was? If you could take a shot well you would always have a chance against Terry. I can picture it now, Norris winning the first fours rounds against Trinidad and scoring a knockdwon and then in the fifth get decapitated. Could he ever beat a puncher like Julian Jackson, we saw it once and it appeared Jackson shot him with a gun. I look at Norris as a wasted talent for the most part. He had all of the attributes you listed; and had the potential to be an ATG. However, he was rarely involved in "the big fight". He beat up on an old Sugar Ray Leonard, destroyed a much smaller man in Meldrick Taylor and was stopped by Simon Brown, though, to his credit, he came back and gave Brown a boxing lesson. I just think it's a shame he was often hiddin on undercards and rarely saw the spotlight. He spent alot of time trying to call out Julio Ceasar Chavez a fighter that was half his size. I dont like watching the Taylor fight although I loved that outdoor venue at Ceasars. Taylor was landing everything against Norris but he was just half his size, why that fight was made is beyond me it made little sense for either man.

He was an incredible athlete... people talk about Roy Jones with all this athletic ability etc, but Terry had just as impressive physical gifts. Tremendous speed Threw combinations from every angle Tons of heart Thew every type of punch consistently and had knockout power in each punch Unbelievable legs and explosiveness Great stamina, never tired Killer instinct that was unmatched Great boxing ability Only achilles heal was his chin. He is everything you would want to make a fighter minus the questionable beard. I take Terry to beat any 154 pounder in history on any given night.
