Cliff “24-Karat” Rold wrote the piece that ripped referee Laurence Cole for his actions Saturday night on HBO’s Boxing After Dark. The charge made by Rold is that Cole, a veteran official, was beyond inappropriate when he told Juan Manuel Marquez that, “he was ahead on points,” this as the fight was stopped in the eighth round pending the Dr. looking at a Marquez cut.
Said Cole, “I screwed up. At first I wasn’t sure if I had said it, as someone told me right after the fight. I didn’t realize what I was doing, I was dead wrong. I expect some action from the commission. I’m not making an assumption, but I think I’ll get suspended. And I deserve to. When I saw it for myself last night, I was shocked. I couldn’t believe I did that. There was no intention on my part to do anything that would negatively impact the fight. I’m sorry, what more can I say, I screwed up.”

Marquez continued to fight despite what he was told. Everyone knew who was ahead anyway, but that doesn't excuse it and it sounds like the ref is willing to accept punishment.
Thing is, in a couple weeks, Taylor-Ouma are doing that open scoring crap - but he'll get in trouble for stating the obvious.
Jaca's people didn't complain, did they?

I believe that was a shame for boxing, AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE!!!
Lawrence Cole should be barred from officiating another fight, he has had a long history of this kind of behavior. He is a deplorable referee and any network broadcasting fights should screen the cards to make sure this guy is not involved in the fights, or pull out support.
What difference does it make if he told him he was ahead on the score card?? Jaca got knocked out...It didn't motivate Marquez to try and knock him out! It would have been different if Marquez was behind and the ref said "look your down on the points! You need to knock him out!"
whiny little babys! have a bottle! :bottle: :bottle: :bottle: :bottle:
It think it could have been worse if he said that Marquez was ahead on points, Marquez quit and then Jaca was the actual fighter ahead on the cards and won a decision.
I woulda laughed if that happened...
what a fvckin lier, he even covered his mic when he said those things to Marquez...i knew something like this would happen the moment i saw Laurence Cole...One can guess that he learned the trick at the feet of the master...Dubya.
To borrow a coinage from "His Excellency, the Decider", Cole "misunderestimated" when he thought that he can avoid being overheard by covering his mic.
Yeah right, his father is the President of The Texas Boxing Commission -Dick ColeAnd the father has been selling insurance to fighters for fights in Texas. If that's not conflict of interest, I don't know what is.

Dont you think he would've been caught by now like they tested Salido? Even though they made a mistake on him.
Omar Nino 30 years and and better then Brian Viloria
he was tested positive for taking a substance
if u like bias ref then u should be pissed off
he may have been biased in the past, i dont really keep track of referees, but He WASNT in this fight. He did a great job except for that tiny tiny tiny mistake.
THIS HAS GONE TO FAR!!!
i cant believe he would get suspended for something like this!
The fact that they are going to take action is FAAAAAR more rediculous then what Cole said...
