Here is Sam Peter when he was 20 years old, young and beautiful (to paraphrase Larry Merchant):

So where did the extra 40 pounds get him? :ugh:
That pic is the weight he should be at.
.....yeah, I agree. When a man is in boxing-shape that is what his body looks like. Here is a picture of Joe Louis at 218 and near the end of his career:

Since the tale-of-the-tape on Sam Peter has never been revealled, probably due to embarrassment, we can not know for sure how much bigger his bone stracture was than Joe Louis. All we know for sure is that Louis was taller and lighter.

Peter definitely needs to lose some weight. If he can get down to 240-245 it'll help him tremendously with his stamina. The question is, does he have the dedication to do that & I really don't think so.
I know there has been a thread over this before, but Peter looked like he had a lot more stamina in the Toney fight eventhough he was heavier.
you have to look at the opponent and the style he fought. he wasnt loading up as much in the toney fight and toney isnt 6'6 240+ lbs,,,,so he wasnt getting pressured by a powerful jab..right hand etc
He was also getting pounded alot more in the Wlad fight than he was in the Toney fight. James Toney is feather fisted in the heavyweight division. Getting beaten up round after round by a bigger guy take's alot out of your stamina.
Ye, but It would have been better if those 2 knockdowns didint count, eventhough it was one sided...
I agree with you, when he fought Klitschko he weighed in at 243 and he was out of gas, for the Toney fight it seemed liked he had a lot more stamina eventought he was 257...

Nowhere. He needs to lose 'em ASAP. 230 is the highest that man should weigh, even with his frame.
BINGO!!!!!.....there's the answer. Or, more succinctly, in answer to the title question: NO.
Thank you and good night. :)
If he just works on losing a good 4-5 lbs per fight he will be good. The problem is, as it's been mentioned, is he must really balloon up in weight between fights. If he can prevent that, he could easily get down to 230-240. I'm not convinced he's entirely doing it on purpose either. I think his discipline leaves something to be desired.
Sam should be 230, no more.
Does your body mature as you get older, of course, but 230 is resonable.
It is Psychological with a lot of athletes: they think "Bigger is Better"
He should really take a full year of trimming down the weight...he shouldn't take on any top 5 guys for another year...we saw what happened to Tua when he lost a lot of weight for Byrd, it was to fast and it worked against him....fighters need to stay in shape year round, and stop stuffing their faces with everything they see...what ever happened to "Self-Control" ?
the majority of Heavyweights today are disgusting

A man runs out of gas faster if his opponent is beating the crap out of him. Wladimir Klitschko has a lot more firepower than James Toney.
Peter thinks he is better with the weight but I also wonder about his diet. I wish someone could convince him he needs to work on shedding the extra flab. Even to go back down to 240 would do wonders for him, not just for stamina but for speed. It's clear from watching the films that he is slower at 257. All of that fat clinging to his body works against the acceleration of his punches.
Sam Peter needs alot more than "weight-management" to honestly defeat James... (at least from a technical standpoint)
** By Nigerian standards, Peter is quite successful. He's also well educated and intelligent. Traditionally, big men with his body type and the culture he comes from think they are strongest with weight. He's his own man and is not likely to work with your average trainer.
He should try to hold his weight at 250 all year round. He's probably over 300 between fights. Mainly he needs to work on conditioning and strategy. He doesn't fight smart and slows down in fights with rounds.

I think if Sam could show up to fight at 235 then that could be a tremendous help to him. I think a big part of his problem is his reluctance to reduce his intake, as is most likely the case with Toney, so I really don't see him trimming down significantly any time soon. That being said, he'll most likely always be fun to watch.
Sam Peter claims to have knocked out the great Felix Savon while sparring. As to whether that is true, I can not say. Nevertheless, Sam Peter is a puncher and could easily knockout anybody if he gets a solid hit. If indeed he did knockout Savon he would have done it at a weight considerably less than when he knocked out Yanqui Diaz. So, I am still wondering why he needs all that extra mass?
