First of all how the hell would we know ? 2nd Lots of people can bench 500 lbs3rd The world rec for bench press is around 800 lbs 4th Mike Tyson benched 400 at a young age This is not uncommon.
best method of testing pure strength would be
Strongman competition.

Rahman is a horse, I bet Briggs can lift a good amount too.
not sure how much someone weight lifts espescially bench pressing has to do with pure strength. for example people with long arms are at a disadvantage for movements such as the bench press,,yet with long arms you can get more leverage in punching,,,arm wrestling even pushing people around. for instance Im 6'3 have long arms but can only bench about 275. a freind of mine is about 5'11 same weight as me and benches 380 lbs yet in wrestling and just messing around I always push him back and toss him around. so there's different kinds of strength and Im not sure what the best method of testing pure strength would be
See the thread title is misleading because if you're going to talk functional strength it's a relevent topic to ability in the boxing ring, but a thread about which boxer claims to bench the most weight is really pretty irrelevent. It's like asking which boxer has the best handicap in golf.
Not sure about weightlighting but in terms of functional strength, Samuel Peter or Valuev with Wlad close behind. Weightlifting doesn't necessarily translate directly into boxing strength as Shane Mosley lifted much more than almost anyone his size but never struck me as exceptionally strong in the clinch.
Rahman benches 500.
Pound for pound I'd say it's Shane Mosley, he benches 350 and squats 500.. that's coming from a natural lightweight.
** Mosely also did steroids, so it don't count.
Is this for 1 repetition? 5oolbs for 1 rep isnt unlikely for Rahman. But i bet all top boxers can bench quite a lot. Calzaghe might be able to bench a bit. Hatton probably can as well. Hopkins, and not just Lacy because he looks like a body builder.
Andre the Giant's strength is legendary...he also didn't lift weights, imagine if he did.
I was watching the documentary of his on A&E (biography) and Vince said that Hogan was scared to death to wrestle Andre. Andre was going to let Hogan win, but Hogan was worried about the possibility that Andre might decide to change his mind and crush him.

Hell Yeah he can bench 500 that isnt even that much for how big his ass is. Darren Sproles a 5' 6" tailback for San Diego can bench 500 and squat 800. So im pretty sure Rocks big ass can bench that too.
You also have to remember that smaller guys usually have smaller arms and legs, so the distance isn't that much, compared to a big guy with long arms and legs.
It all depends:
Who is on steroids and who isn't?
I will say this, Rahman has always been one to have to lose weight to get into fighting shape, instead of bulking up to fight.
The guy definetly seems to have been a naturally big heavyweight.
For Rahman, they said he was always a big S.O.B.
He was supposedly one of, if not the toughest and strongest in his neighborhood. Emanuel Steward commented on Rahman's fist size, which are huge. The man is just big boned.
This is also probably why he was able to start boxing late and become Champion. It is most likely good genes: His brother, like others have mentioned, is supposed to be big as well, and his son is pretty big for his age. This is also whay Rahman has basically handed over his son to Emanuel because he felt that if he had started earlier, with his natural ability, he could of been better. We will see how it works out for his son.
For Shane, he is strong for his size as well. If I heard correctly, Shane said he was working out in his high-school gym when the weight-lifting coach saw him lifting, and he put Shane on the team.

Before the Klit and Rock fight was going to happen
"Klitschko will have the benefit of size, with a five and a half inch height and 20 pound advantage, but although Vitali is strong, Rahman can bench press 500 pounds and has arms like tree trunks."

That is one article, I highly doubt that they'd get it wrong.
you mean he says he can bench press 500 lbs. anyway,,,I heard his brother benches over 500 and he does over 400. not sure who his brother is,,but I dont think hes a boxer
No he didn't say, the people who wrote the article said. They said that when they saw him working out he was benching a little over 500. He said that his bro can bench press 100lbs more than him so that's 600 lbs right there, I think he's a surgeon or a doctor. Type in "Hasim Rahman 500 bench" on google or something like that and you might find it. I've seen several articles saying that he can bench 500 though.
Boxer right now? Not punching power, but overall strength such as lifting weights. Rahman is pretty damn strong, he can bench over 500lbs.
