Representatives of WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev and IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko are in serious negotiations for a title unification showdown in April. Maskaev has a defense scheduled for December 10 plus a mandatory against the winner of the Sam Peter-James Toney rematch, but would likely ask for an exception and try to unify with Klitschko. The fight could take place in the United States or Russia, wherever the money is.
What I dont get is why Maskaev had to sign on to fight this bum Okhello, it was a really stupid move, no way the wbc lets maskaev fight klitschko, I highly doubt it...
I mean Wlad did beat Brewster silly till he fainted. It's not like Brewster showed anything in that fight that could scare Wlad except for balls. All Wlad would do the next fight is throw less and keep dominating him to an eventual TKO. I mean, Brewster never even touched him, Wlad KOed himself.
I think Peter would be more of a dangerous fight then Brewster.
i agree with this. i'd say peter packs a harder punch and is more wild in the ring making him a more difficult opponent than brewser.
and why is it we haven't hear anything about or from brewster for a long time.
he must be semi-retired.
both, the wbc and the ibf, better make sure there is nothing in the way of this unification. it's been too goddamn long since we've had a champ with more than 1 major belt. and let's be thankfull for having 2 champs who are willing to fight eachother.
When you put it like THAT...
... actually, I kind of think Brewster has to come back to validate Little Klit's career.
I can see why sorda, but on the other hand I cant.

Klitschko waited 8 months after beating Chris Bryd before getting back into the ring and will be out at least 4-6 weeks after sustaining a cut in the Brock fight. Plus he doesn't have to deal with King's insistence on options to promote future fights.
also another good way to put it..
1 - What happened to the 20 Mil for fighting Holyfield???
2 - Why wait for Maskaev, when he can fight Briggs, or Valuev?

the king factor, king talks shit about a heavyweight tournament then when hes offered something he says no or dodges it somehow, watch the klitschko-brock post fight presser and you will get the reason why its next to impossible to get a unification with a king fighter...
It depends on when Peter/Toney fight goes down. If it's in February or March, Maskaev might get that exception, I think WBC would give it to him without any problems. I still wish Vitali came back and won WBC belt. :(
EDIT: Just remembered that Peter/Toney is on Jan 06, so chances of exception for Maskaev are slim. Oh well, I'm sure that Wlad/Toney would be a much bigger draw.
I'm a big Toney fan, but Wlad would destroy him. Toney's advantages vs. HW's are his speed and defense. Wlad is too quick, and too big for those advantages to be relevant. Wlad TKO10 Toney.
Klitschko vs. Maskaev to unify (and gain The Ring championship belt, note) is just boxrec bollocks, really. Maskaev won't offer much resistance to Little Klit... it's even safe to assume that he'd quite easily get past Valuev.
I like Little Klit, but it'll be a disgrace if he becomes the completely unified champ without ever facing a live opponent.
He beat Sam Peter already, who in many eyes is a very live opponent, he beat Chris Byrd who was considered by many of the experts, the best heavyweight champ prior to losing to Wlad. He beat Brock who was undefeated. What else do you expect? Maskaev knocked Rahman out who many on here were calling the best heavyweight out there.
I think if Wlad beats one of the title holders it will be enough for now because we all know that don king will not want any part it, so why not unify the wbc title then fight the best opposition besides don king..
I echo that same sentiment; partial unification is better than no unification at all. Plus, if Klitschko wins( like everyone thinks will happen and is predicting) then a mandatory defense against either Toney or Peter both looks good on paper. If its against Toney then its a battle of styles and would hopefully bring out the best of James Toney. If its against Peter, then Peter will be held with high regard after beating a very good opponent in James Toney twice and the 'revenge' factor will surely be used to hype the fight.
Point is, if Klitschko were to beat Maskaev for the WBC title and then defend both titles(IBF-WBC) against Toney or Peter then IMO either fight is credible and is pleasing to the boxing fan.
Toney would indeed do some things that would make Wlad work, but the size/power disparity would taint this matchup, and it could never count as a major victory even if Wlad were to win by vicious KO/TKO
Agreed, but whom do you count as a live opponent?
Peter? Brewster? Toney?
He beat Peter and lost to Brewster. I would much rather see him against Toney it would be a great clash of styles, schooles, etc.
When you put it like THAT...
... actually, I kind of think Brewster has to come back to validate Little Klit's career, and - as stupid as this may sound, I've only seen him twice - I actually want to see Wlad vs. Briggs.
He SHOULD fight Toney as well, even though it may well end with Toney being killed.

I have an idea; after the newly IBF-WBC champ is crowned why not let him fight the winner of Toney-Peter? Either way the champ is fighting the top contenders in Toney or Peter and can unify the other titles in subsequent fights.
