It's true, episodes of The Contender got about twice as many viewers as each of Calzaghe's last three fights.
Uhuh.
No crap. ESPN2 is on cable. HBO is extended viewing most people don't have.
Geez. I get tired of useless comparisons.
1) It's a reality tv show, not a one time event (like I don't a single boxing match with 1 or 2 undercards)
2) The viewing audiences are completley different. Cable is broadcast to almost everyhome in america. HBO is not nearly as available.
3) If you count the English audience is not as big as American audience.
Now, if you correct this statement and tell me.
"Twice as many English viewers saw the Contender as the last 3 Joe Calzaghe fights"
Then you will have made a correct analogy.
Lolz....it might be true.... :lol1:
I wouldn't pay too much attention to the significance of Contender or its populatiry in the UK. The first series of the show was on ITV1. Its now been shifted to ITV4. ITV4 aint available unless you have freeview or a digital box. You dont shift a show which has been claimed to have pulled 10 million viewers to ITV4 (Which is not viewed by many people).
He's fourth favourite with the bookies, but only because there's nobody else worthy! He was nominated on a shortlist of five or six because of his win over Lacy, but he'll come last in the voting anyway ;)
Boxers very rarely win anything on BBC Sports personality. Lewis and Bruno are exceptions. Nas didn't win shit and was only every briefly featured on the show-despite the fact he held numerous belts.

You're right, it's tough competition this year. I haven't checked the odds for a while - is that royal tart with the teeth still favourite?
.
Even if people watched the contender, they would have forgotten his name by now.
That is absolutely correct. Reality stars very rarely stick in peoples minds. I mean, can anyone remember the names of any of the Big Brother contestants or would even recognise them in the streets?
People will not watch reality tv unless the subject interests them. You will not find non boxing fans watching contender. Why would they want to watch an American reality tv show which has no significance in the UK? The participants are all Americans. The winner will not make any personal appearance on UK newspapers or TV shows. You wont see Manfredo as a guest on GMTV or BBC breakfast news. He wont be interviewed by Hello or OK. Wont feature on any Sun, Mirror or Evening Standard entertainment/celebrity listings or features. The winner of Fame Academy, Big Brother, X-factor, Pop Idol (all UK reality shows), will.
I think people will watch any reality tv show, because thats exactly wat reality tv shows are aimed at. Making people watch the tv for an hour.
U dont have to like cooking to watch Gordon Ramseys reality show, its just about people arguing and getting pissed off at each other.
Thats really why reality tv is so popular. Its like a real life drama.
I couldnt watch the contender because for 45 minutes there was no boxing, it was just shit.
The kind of shit people watch on some reality tv shows.
Also, i personally have never seen a Manfredo fight since the contender.
Even if people watched the contender, they would have forgotten his name by now.
Last time I checked Calzaghe was second favourite for UK Sports Personality of the year (yeah, the irony isn't lost on me either). Hardly fits in with the "more people have heard of some random in the US" line.

and many of the Contender fans were reality TV fans, not boxing fans.

Maybe in the States he is, but he's totally anonymous in the UK.
Clearly he is not going to be very well known. He has spent most of his life boxing career on Sky. What do you expect?
Joe is well known in the UK....not hugely well known...but no way is Manfredo more known in the UK..although im speaking from a London perspective..don't know where you guys live in the UK..but all my non boxing mates have heard of Calzaghe..if i said to them whos Manfredo..they would say is that a new pop band.
Unfortunately, its one of these rediculous statements made by Juy along with the other one, which is that Calzaghe is not liked by the majority of English boxing fans because he happens to be Welsh. Yeah right. Boxing isn't football. Its not as tribal as football.

Calzaghe want's the fame, but won't take the risk. And therefore it's a good fight for Calzaghe. He's not aiming for the record books, just the tv-guides.
I could ask 100 people on the street who Joe Calzaghe is and maybe 1 would know. Hes a nobody in the states. Matter of fact Floyd Mayweather Jr. himself is a nobody. Boxing is less popular than hockey over here.
