Oct 24 - Floyd Mayweather Jr disses Sugar Ray Leonard
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a recent article by Brian Doogan for the Times Online, Doogan quotes Sugar Ray Leonard from a recent boxing awards dinner in Vegas. Sugar Ray, talked openly about the way Floyd Mayweather Jr., acted and treated him at the event.
The Legendary Sugar Ray said he was approached by Mayweather Jr., and Mayweather Jr. began to berate him for losing to a lightweight (another legend, Roberto Duran) when he was in his prime. Sugar Ray recalls at that time smiling
and shaking his head ruefully.
Sugar Ray said: “He said, ‘Ray, you know, if you were in my era you wouldn’t be in the top 10’.
Sugar Ray had compliments and strong advice for Mayweather Jr., adding: “Of all the fighters today, I have to say that Mayweather reminds me the most of me. The kid has every gift and physical attribute, but if he continues to be the type of person he is, he’ll never be up there with us. He’ll never make it."

If PBF did do and say those things and it was not in a joking manner than that is some @sshole type of stuff.
I will never knock a man for saying they are greatest cause I can't get on a man for the opinion he has of himself. But that was some stupid sh!t to say and do to Ray Leonard!
On second thought maybe PBF felt like G.W. Bush that fvcker Saddam went after my father (Ray Leonard beat the brakes off Sr.) Bush was like fvck it I'm gonna get this fvcker for my daddy(PBF talking sh!t to Ray to get him out of retirement so PBF can get revenge for his daddy). Just saying its possible.
For all the b!tches that thought about complaining that last paragraph was a complete joke!!
Mayweather still think it is just about boxing. And even if we exclusively talk about boxing, I don't think he can compete in the same competition of Hagler, Hearns, Duran era.
But back to integrity and attitude...him dissing the old greats this way. Wow, I have been a fan of Mayweather (boxing-wise) but really he is pushing people away from him.
Arrogance have seeped into every fiber of his being and every crevice of his essence...I don't know if he's ever going to take a loss but one thing I know if he ever losses to Pacquiao (if that fight will ever happen), we know who is jumping off the cliff the very next day.
And it won't be Pacquiao.
i agree with this whole post hearns would have beat leonard if it was a 12 round fight!
No he wouldn't.
It's irritating when this comes up because people just don't get that a 15 round fight is different from a 12, do you really think that Leonard would have fought the same fight if it was 12 instead of 15 ?. Absolutely not.
I'm not saying he would win either, no one knows obviously, trying to say it's a fact that Hearns would beat Leonard in a 12 rounder is just silly.
Everything would be different in how they fought.
Duran was a welterweight at that point in his career. A lot of ppl dont realize that Duran had been fighting as a welterweight for about 2 years before he took on Leonard.
Floyd is an absolute moron for saying stuff like this, but you morons who say Duran or SRL would murder Floyd are just plain ignorant, literally just plain ignorant. Go back and watch some f***ing film. Could either of them have beaten Floyd? Of course they could have, nut murder Floyd, cmon now you're just being ignorant. Now Tommy Hearns is a completely different story, WW was his first weight class and he was just and absolute freak WW and a nightmare matchup for ANY WW. Hearns would decapitate ANY welterwieight on the planet today. He'd blow Manny away in 3 rounds, and would have a damn good chance at stopping Floyd too. Yes I am well aware that SRL TKO'd Hearns, I've watched the fight a million times, but if we're talking about today, where boxing matches are only 12 rounds, Hearns was probably winning that fight by 4 or 5 rounds.
Nice digging up this thread.
Naw where the hell are those flomos who keeps saying floyd is just playing the bad guy here. Was he role playing here also just in case there's a matchup between him and SRL on paper?
LOLers floydie, he's always been a fraud before, now and later. :D
4 years later of this thread has been made.
Who would know back then that floyd would duck a career featherweight and accuse him of PEDS and when they finally agree that he rather go on vacation.
Yes duran was a career lightweight who was very competitive at the higher weight class. Duran was doing back then what pacquaio is doing now. And we all know floyd would accuse duran with peds and go on vacation.
SLR fought ATG's. Duran is a top 10 ATG's. none of Floyd opponents would even make it to top 100 all time.
why compare the two if the only comparison is that they are both african american boxer?

The bold... Ray called it perfectly.
And if Duran, Hearns, Hagler, Benitez, etc; you know- guys that Ray fought in his era were calling for fights with Floyd in his, Money May would've been in a career long 'vacation' :cool2:
You know, I never would have thought that Floyd would actually disrespect old legends like that in front of their face. I guess he really does think he's better than Ali and SRR.
Prime Tommy Hearns would have completley destroyed Mayweather, and Ray TKO'd him so I think Floyd just has no reason to talk shit about how Leonard was as a champion and what not.
I think Floyd Mayweather Jr. should step up and be a Man: he claims he is the best in boxing, prove yourself by fighting someone like Wlad...he could even fight Tua, who hasn't looked good in years, I will be OK with that

I like Floyds overall boxing talent.. but if this is true he is an asshole :firedevil
I'm no longer wonderin why alot of people hate him and would love to see him get beat up :killyou:
I never trust one line quotes. Writers do this stupid crap all the time. It is known that Floyd and Ray joke around a lot about who would beat who and talk trash to each other out of fun. This was probably taken out of context. If Floyd did not say this jokingly then yea he is a arrogant little prick but it wont stop me from watching him inside the ring.
Dont believe everything a writer writes becaue more than 65% of it is probably Bullshit.
Yes, I agree with this also: you can write a quote, but mislead the reader by not letting it known what tone was used, this is why we have the smilies, lol.
As long there is no L in his record and thats what counts.another thing why people forget the second fight you alway take a person by his last fight.
Duran would have betten Floyd.
Yes i think Floyd would act like that because he belive he is the best and once he become best ever. insulting Sugar Ray psyche him up because that is the drive to go through. If you belive your not the best then you wont be successful.
Absolutely agree...

Floyd too would get whooped by Duran, the lightweight as he calls him. I wonder what Floyd thinks of Hagler who won a very close descision against the lightweight Duran. Ray should have told him, "you lost to Castillo, a lightweight" and i bet Floyd would have gone crazy cause he knows its true. Or maybe thats why Ray said Floyd reminds him of himself.

ESPN has its reputation on the line, I am sure they probably got it from a reliable source...they will edit any information that is not true if put in the doc.
I think there has only been one complaint known from an ESPN documentary, but ESPN backed what was said and I haven't heard anything else about it.
It's true, I also read it in one of Ali's biographies. Later on Ali and Robinson became good friends, and Ali told of one time that he was visiting Robinson at his home and they were talking, and Ali mentioned the time he asked for his autograph, and then Muhammad said, "I'm still waiting for that autograph."
