I was going to say the same, I think Toney at 215 or even 220 would be a great weight considering he insists on being a HW and has done well at it even at the weights he has being coming in at.
I agree with the 215 to 220 range.
I think 215 will be the perfect shape for Toney, 200 is to light, considering some of the heavyweights are over 260.

Having extra fat on your body is not going to save your head from snapping back from a hard blow, which is what causes a knockout. You can argue that a particulary fat individual might be more resistant to bodyblows (providing they've done their ab work and have strong abs beneath their flab) but it will not help against blows to the head one bit.

my sediments exactly, I believe he needs to shed the weight and under 215 sounds perfect. I had somebody once post" he needs the extra weight to stay put when he gets hit" still lmao I don't get it Why would you want a fat and underconditioned athlete regardless what the other guy weights. Toney at 235 is a fat bastard, How could that possibly help him. He could use the speed and endurance greatly.

quite simply , fat obsorbs impact more and stops the concusive force of a blow from reaching you brain stim as easly.
fat fighters simply are notoriusly hard to knock out.
but they defenately cant fight as well.
225-227 is more than likely toneys heavyweight sweetspot.
he really should try to get back there?
the funny part of this is, the only reason toney wants to lose weight is so he can win so convicngly that he can't possibly be robbed again. thats why hes gonna work with shillstone (sp??) who trained hopkins to fight tarver. the man is and was schooling HWs at a fat 235
Toney at 200 lbs would be a serious force in this division. I think even at 215 or 220 he is too flabby. Toney at 200, who's chin will be just as good as it is at 235 and his power effectively improved because his speed will dramatically increase, would be a much better heavyweight than the bloated incarnation that shows up to fight and hardly ever wins decisively.
215 is the absolute HIGHEST he should weigh.
i agree with what you said but i think that 210 is acceptable and anythin under is just helpin the matter. he will be far faster and more agile but i might affect him mentally because of the weight he would have to shed
Exactly. Toney will never have a big punch at heavyweight, so he needs to wear these guys down through attrition. He has to be able to throw punches and take advantage of countering opportunities for all 12 rounds. The guy knows how to relax and breath, he's just way too fat. Toney at 200 pounds would have amazing stamina because of his ability to relax. The only one who beats him at that weight is Wlad Klit IMO because of Wlad's size, athleticism, and good 1-2. Everyone else just gets countered to death and then Toney would swoop in for the kill when he has them hurt. As is, he can't afford to expend the energy to finish someone when he has them hurt.
But the odds of Toney fighting at 200-210 seem very long to me.

toney should move down to cruiserweight..i dont think toney could get in shape if he wanted to at this point
:nonono: That was a retarded idea from the word go, cruiserweight is a no mans land. Toney is a prize fighter. He'd have to go even further down to Lght HVY. And to say he couldn't get in shape if he wanted to is ludicris. NO comment.
I don't know man. Tyson early in his career was 210-215 I believe.
Think of how slow and lumbering most heavyweights are. Put a swift swarming Frazier in with any of them and he may not knock them out with one punch but ALL of them would go down on aggregate punching.
Speed generates power and no heavyweights today could cope with a 6' - 6'2 200-210 boxer who was swift and powerful AND skilled.
Wlad is the only HW with a crisp jab. He has barely any footwork though and clinches under pressure.
Toney had a couple of crisp flurries against Peter but he fights defensively and doesn't have the speed or stamina to attack for more than a flurry.
Other than that most heavyweights are thudders and telegraph their punches.
A half-decent Frazier or Ali style fighter would take apart the vast majority of heavyweights today even at 200-210. And even if they lost they'd be FAR more watchable.
there is no question that the smaller Toney is the more efficient he can be..Toney is just simply a great fighter. I would love to see him drop and stay in the 215-225 range....
Toney needs a strenght and conditioning coach and a nutrition coach, he needs to loose much fat and put on some muscle and come in at a solid 215-220 pounds! I think the guy who trained Bernard Hopkins for Tarver would be a great man to do it but i forget his name.

If he can't get into shape at heavyweight, how is he supposed to do so at cruiserweight?
Regarding his best weight at heavy, i think the 217lbs he weighed against Holyfield would be a great weight for him, theres no way he'll ever fight at less than that again.

It's only a matter of time before a complete fighter in that category appears, but it is not James Toney. Boytsov is in that category, and has the speed and power, but I don't know about the skill and defense.
Yes he should be as light and agile as possible. He keeps complaining about the decisions he gets, if he lost some weight hed be able to do his thing much better and leave much less doubt in the eye of the public.
