It was reported by John C. Cotey of the St. Petersburg Times, that middleweight Winky Wright will not sign the contract for a Dec 2. pay-per-view rematch with midldweight champion Jermain Taylor, unless he gets a deal that feels (W)right.
A guaranteed $5-million is on the table, the fight is agreed upon in principle, but Winky is looking for a chunk of the pay-per-view money, and a better split of the pot.
"Well, nothing's signed, and we aren't done looking over the offer that they gave us. But I'm not going to take it if there aren't some changes. I definitely want a part of the pay-per-view," Wright said.
Jim Wilkes, adviser to Wright, is confident the deal can be made.
"I can't conceive of anything that stops this fight," Wilkes said. "One thing about Winky is he's never been self-destructive. Not taking it would mean passing on millions and millions of dollars."
While Wilkes wants Wright to take the deal offered by Lou DiBella, the promoter for Jermain Taylor, Wright is holding out from signing the contract, at least for the moment. Wright wants at least a 55-45 split, as was the deal in the initial bout, and is against the current 60-40 offer. Wilkes feels that Wright should take the 60-40 offer, because he will beat Taylor, and then earn 60-40 in his favor for a possible third meeting next Spring. Wilkes also admitted that Wright would earn far less against the likes of Kassim Ouma or Ike Quartey.
"We're not on the same page," Wright said, "but that's good. He's the reasonable one. But I'm the one that has got to be respected."
The fact remains that Taylor is still the champion, the fight was a draw, not a Winky win. So Winky is completely wrong here, even if your his fan, you should agree that Winky is full of shit here.
well but you have to look at it from Winky's side.. through his stubbornness (i know it's there), he's now almost entirely negotiating himself, whereas Taylor can keep full confidence in Lou DiBella to handle everything outside of the ring for him.. it's all a matter of perception really.. if Taylor was going "solo" such as Wink's doing, he'd have to go through these negotiations on his sole feelings alone too... believe me, give this thing another week and the fight will be signed, one way or the other.. a boxer just has to look out for himself, moreso Wright than anyone in the sport with really no representation
The fight was exciting because Taylor FORECED Winky to engage with him.
Taylor made that fight exciting, not Winky.
did u even watch the fight????????????
Winkys jab had him backed up in the corner all night... wtf were u watching???? hop off JT's nuts...
i, in honesty, know that Winky is not a draw to casual boxing fans, but it's also true that people that think Taylor is anymore a draw to the 'casuals' are simply delusional
why do they keep fucking wink over all he wants is his fare share.
5mill is a lot but he should get 50/50 this is a fight the public wants
the belts dont mean shit IM going to the fight if it happens, but im not going to see taylor im going because this should be another good fight .the reason Lou Debilla wants to fight wink again is because nobody wants to see taylor fight a nobody.Taylor is not OSCAR, MIKE,LEONARD or ALI. this is a fucking joke its Lou debilla . wink is not greedy he just wants what belongs to him and thats his fareshare. im tired of these guys getting the better half of the money because of name and star power and not on boxing ability.
Don't bother with logic for Taylor apologists. They refuse to accept it.
Taylor got his ass kicked in the fight. But as usual with him, he just needs to stay on his feet to get a decision.
Wright is smart for demanding his money. He's the biggest fight Taylor can make. For all the hype of him being a superstar, his power and spark have sizzled when in there with veteran stars.
He needs Wright in there for a rematch and he needs to hurt him bad to make a mark.
wtf are you talking about, how the fuck did taylor get his ass kicked. taylor easily landed the harder shots.
WTF??? JT Wants 60-40? some bullshit... It was a DRAW not a W last fight.... That aint a fair splt, even if he does have the belts...
Im questioning now if JT really wants to fight winky again...
it's simple moron winky don't put asses in the seats and he don't have the fucking belts. winky is acting like a fucking pussy he should take the fight and shut his fucking mouth.
The fight was exciting because Taylor FORECED Winky to engage with him.
Taylor made that fight exciting, not Winky.
wow PBF... that's total and complete BS, i don't even want you to watch the fight again, just don't watch period...
I plain disagree. Winky walked Taylor down with the jab. The only time Taylor had any advantage at all was when Wright got flatfooted. But I think most would agree that Wright was the one doing the stalking and engaging. And the punch numbers show it.

Taylor dictated the pace of the fight. Because there wasnt enough action early, Taylor started backing up into the ropes to engage Wright and get him to let his hands go, because one would assume Taylor had the advantage when they were trading. Its simple, really.

So it couldn't have been Wright's accurate punching directly on the eye, that led to an increased amount of swelling, in turn leading to Taylor's eye closing shut?
Wright had been hitting Taylor for 9 rounds before the first headbutt, which resulted in minimal swelling.
It was only after that headbutt, plus the one in the 10th, that started the severe swelling on Taylor's eye.
Winky the "boring" fighter pushed dictated the pace of last fight in which almost everyone agreed was an exciting affair. People think that just because Winky doesn't get hit to much he is a boring fighter, while the fact of the matter is that he is the one going forward in most all of his fights.

I thought JT won The first won, but he def lost the last 2... But you can ARGUE that he lost all those fights... How is winky boring? HE put on a show against taylor..... swelling is eye up like that, people on here were talking about it being FOTY...

no shit, if i hear one more person call Winky "boring", i'm gonna flip.. it's ridiculous, its used to be "fashionable" to say that (even with the performance Wright-Taylor put on a few months back). The only people making these comments are those that just don't like Winky Wright.. and it shows
also, people need to understand how important negotiations are to a fighter, it's easy to sit back and call someone a "bitch" when you think you know the entire situation..
God damn you are totally delusional.
Anyone who has Taylor losing all three of those fights cannot score fights.
Winky is a boring fighter, and Winky, the CHALLENGER, needs Taylor the CHAMPION.

man, seriously, screw anybody bitching about Wright wanting more money.. he's a businessman (one of the smartest) and he's gonna try to get himself the best deal possible.. rest assured this fight is happening, Wright's just going to squeeze as much out of this as he can..
and it's more than funny that some people would think he doesn't want to fight Taylor again (it is, however, what Taylor fans should hope for) People act like negotiations over money having anything to do with someones will to fight need to wake up... Winky is a stubern businessman, much like Sugar Ray Robinson was in his day.. people need to get over this
also 97% of this board needs to learn a new word other than "bitch"
Winky Wright is a money hungry whore. He always does the double switch, agree, not agree, agree, not agree.
I think Winky is just trying to make up for all those years that he was overlooked and never given a shot. He feels he has paid his dues and now it is time for him to make take care of himself. I have no problem with that. We all know he wants this fight and I beleive they are going to make this deal. Winky is negotiating, but he is not stupid, He is not gonna pass on the money and the oppurtunity to avenge a fight that he feels he won and the oppurtunity to become the undisputed middleweight champ. He realizes that a Quartey or Ouma fight is not gonna be as lucrative.
After the headbutt, Taylor eye started swelling, so it was def the Headbutt!
So it couldn't have been Wright's accurate punching directly on the eye, that led to an increased amount of swelling, in turn leading to Taylor's eye closing shut?
