I was just thinking which fighter in recent history was the most gifted physically. I'm not talking about skills just pure talent i.e. speed, power, reflexes chin. Here are some nominee's from off the top of my head:
Hamed
PBF
RJJ
Tyson
Zab
Pac-Man
Jermaine
Edited for clarification, I'm curious as to who you gentlemen think was the most physically gifted.
roy jones @ 160-168 was not only a boxing phenom, but also one of the most gifted natural athletes of that era. the fact that to have his speed and still be a "big" guy is even more impressive. roy showed the hand and footspeed that would've put lightweights to shame. and on top of that, at MW and SMW, roy had incredible punching power. his speed-power ratio was insane, even when he was shoeshining and not putting full leverage into shots he could KO people.
also, i think ike ibeabuchi, for a "big" heavyweight was someting else. at his best walking around 235, he had a tremendous physique, an iron jaw, and a workrate that dished out a punch output that rivaled even the light weight classes.
as far as today's current crop, it has to be floyd and jermain taylor. floyd is the perfect combination of god given talent and masterful boxing fundamentals. he's never too reliant on athleticism. plus you could put floyd at 130-135 in the same category as roy jones. also, as far as active fighters go, jermain taylor deserves some honorable mention. big, strong 160lber, but still has plenty of speed, and he could move a tank with his jab. he lacks many basic boxing skills, and is often described as fighting like an amateur, but that doesn't change the fact he was able to give a tough fight to the most fundamentally sound, and experienced boxers in his weight class; being b-hop and winky (despite who you may think actually won those fights). he was able to do that on natural talent alone, and that's gotta say something.
Tysons peak physically had to be in the 80s, 90s was more of his downfall. James Toney hands down is the most talented skilled boxer Ive ever seen fight. Mayweather is something special but James is the best pure fighter Ive ever watched. Throw back style, philly shell, best chin ever IMO, and devastating punching power and technique in his hay day. Even a 38 year old overweight James can take the biggest punches of the Heavyweight division. Truly something special in Boxing.
I say it is close between RJJ and Tyson, with me giving the edge slightly to tyson. People forget that Tyson was well under 6 ft tall fighting uphill against true heavy wghts but his incredible physical abilities (strength/speed/reflexes) allowed him to knock them (most of them) out with ease.
WTF!! no meldrick taylor!!
roy was the most gifted.. easily imo
but friggin meldrick threw 8 punch combos.. who does that?
You must've forgot(no pun intended) but Roy has thrown 26 punch combos and a 42 punch combo as a super middle-weight, dogg.
Roy was a freak of nature!!! In terms of pure athletic ability, none of the other fighters should be mentioned with Roy. Just imagine if he had a better trainer.
To make their pro debut since 1990
Ibeabuchi
Golota
McClellan
Vitali
Jones
De La Hoya
Felix Trinidad
Mosely
Lennox Lewis
Most of those guys made their pro debuts in the 80's.
hands down the best fighter of the 90's to me was Sweet Pea Pernell Whitaker.
But in terms of who is the most gifted fighter, that is hands down Floyd Mayweather jr.
Roy without a doubt, he made both Bernard Hopkins And James Toney(both of who I got alot of respect for) look like amatuers. The guy was so athletic, he MADE his style look like one you'd want to try to learn. But, true his skill wasn't all that great but in the talent department, P4P, Roy Jones Jr. was on top.
Roy Jones.
He didnt have great boxing ability, but incredible athleticism allowed him to dominate for a long, long time.
I agree 100%, Roy's athletic talent allowed him to beat technically superior fighters in JT (one of the most skilled fighters of his generation) and Hopkins (another extremley skilled and wiley fighter).
Edited for spelling I put be instead of beat
Jones was juiced up to the gills.
In amateur fights he didn't have speed and reflexes like that, though he was quite quick and did actually appear more technical (though threw far too many hooks).. it just wasn't the same though, that shit wasn't natural.
WTF are you talking about, he didn't have speed in the amatuers?
You know nothing...as you age, you get stronger, and your reflexes can become faster if you practice...ever notice why athletes are better in there 20's compared to when they are teenagers.
Jones speed was so slow in this fight, that is why he didn't win Gold

For Jones as a boxer, he should of had a better trainer growing up...he an his trainer are lucky Roy was so naturally talented.
Jones and Ali got away with so much it really is amazing
RJJ was a freak against noobs.
Against Tarver and a journeyman... he sleeps in the canvas.
YEAH YOU FORGOT TO MENTION THE PART WHERE HE FELL AFTER GAINING AND DROPPING MORE THAN 20 LBS WITHIN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.

in his prime, physically tyson was probably the most gifted boxer in a long time he had superior power speed and chin to most fighters and he had all that in one package
if only his head was screwed on properly
Roy Jones Jr was a freak of nature. There has never been and likely never will be another boxer with his athleticism.
