Holds an impressive record of 38-0-1 (20 KO) and the draw was a 4th round technical draw. He is the WBA Featherweight Chamion of thew world. He has successfully defended his title against Derrick Gainer and Juan Manuel Marquez. He also just recently defended his title by winning a wide UD against Renan Acosta.
Yet most people except hardcore boxing fans even know who this guy is. I think he is very overlooked when people talk about all these matchups and great fighters at 126-130 pounds. John is never even mentioned. The guy is a good fighter. One problem I think is that he never fights outside of his native Indonesia. I hope HBO or Showtime grabs him up and gives him a big fight. He beat Marquez and Marquez headlines a show on Showimte coming off that loss. I just really think this guy is overlooked.
What do you guys think about Chris John?
John's next fight is likely to be in January or February against the undefeated Jorge Linares who is suppose to be extrenely fast. Sounds interesting enough of a fight to me. But after this..Marquez rematch or another big fight please.
Competitive my ass. People who saw the fight and "know how to score" will always know that was a gift for John.
John won,
Marquez lost,
period.
You think Marquez won, I think John won. We can go back and forth forever lets just stop now.
call me when you want me to move your couch.
Fact is Chris John won that fight. He has the belt and the W on his record. Nothing you guys can say or do to change that. You can say robbery all you want but John won and thats that. It was a very competitive close fight, not a robbery.

Alittle bitch slap from John and the commentators were screaming louder then they scream for godzilla...
It's funny because Marquez was always landing and backing John up, yet the announcer only said in a calm matter,"ahh...Marquez." I mean shit man, the ref. even had John's hand in the air way before they even announced the decision. That was a robbery at it's finest.
Uh yea.....I just got done watching it and scoring it.
You guys are just biased towards mexicans. I scored that fight 114-112 for John and I feel that makes perfect sense. A lot of rounds were very close and it was a very close fight. Maybe Marquez should have won, some rounds could have gone either way. But John won and thats that. That fight was not a robbery at all. Stop being biased towards mexican, im mexican and I called teh fight like it was. And I have no problem with John getting taht decison, it was a very close fight. I gave them 6 rounds a piece but Marquez got points deducted, and he did deserve at least one deduction for them low blows.
Your joking right? John only won like 3 rounds. When I first heard from a boxing site that John won, I was shocked at first but then I noticed that the judges had John winning the fight by a big margin against the best technical boxer at 126, so I didn't take that news as the truth till I got the chance to see the fight myself and boy was I right. Man I bet you let the announcers trick you into believing John was winning the rounds, cause those fuckers were cheerleading for john through the whole fight.
If he wants, I'll give him a job when I need help moving the couch.
Yea just let me know when. Im not available on Wednesday but any other day will be fine.
John beat Marquez fair and square?, did you actually see the fight? It pisses me off when people make comments like that when they have never even seen the fight.

I justo got done watching the Chris John-Marquez fight and watched it very closely. I came up with this.
Round 1: 10-9 Marquez
Round 2: 10-9 Marquez
Round 3: 10-9 John
Round 4: 10-9 John
Round 5: 10-9 Marquez
Round 6: 10-9 John
Round 7: 10-9 John
Round 8: 10-9 Marquez
Round 9: 10-9 Marquez
Round 10: 10-8 John
Round 11: 10-8 John
Round 12: 10-9 Marquez
Chris John: 114
J M Marquez: 112
I scored the fight 6 rounds a piece and John won because the low blow point deduction. I think the deductions were legit, Marquez' clearly landed some low blows and at least 1 point deduction made sense, and I cant complain about 2. I feel Chris John won this fight fair and square. Just because they were in Indionesia doesnt mean it was a hometown decision.
These two were very evenly matched. I really enjoyed this fight, wasnt very exciting but very tactical. Both fighters fought very smart. John is a very good fighter and I do feel he is very underrated. He beat Marquez fair and square. I would love to see a rematch in America on Showtime maybe. These two match up well.
WOW, you should stick to scoring amatur bouts.
He is a very good counter puncher and counters a lot in combinations. But at times he can fight behind a decent jab. Hes a very smart fighter. Throws sharp combinations. I think hes the best 126 pounder. Marquez was the best and John beat him fair and square. Therefore hes the top dog now. I do want to see a rematch of taht fight though, or a fight with Cook or Harrison.

Is he a defensive counter-puncher, or is he very patient behind a jab? I didn't think he was a giant puncher, but not sure how he handled a skilled counter-puncher like Marquez.

Allright Grayfist sounds like the man I want to talk to. I am doing a piece on John and want to know everything I can from personal to professional and I'm currently awaiting fight footage myself. But footage doesn't tell me about his background, so any help there brother? I know most Indonesians are Muslim so being a Christian is a different path.Sorry, pal, I can't be of any help. All I know about John and Indonesian boxing do not go too far beyond what are contained in that paragraph I posted.
It is my wish, though, that boxing's popularity can engulf Indonesia-- a country so densely populated it makes one wonder why no significant effort has been visible to market the sport there. Moreover, boxing by its very nature can serve as a catharsis for a large chunk of the population's pent up emotions... It can serve some social good. While Indonesians and John can perhaps initiate work in this direction, the leaders of worldwide boxing should see that making Indonesia part of the world boxing map is in the sport's best interest.
As far as John growing up in a predominantly muslim country (so predominant, Indonesia is considered the biggest muslim nation in the world), I am nearly sure that it would be, at least, an "interesting" study and deserves a piece to be written. I sure am glad that you have set your sights on such a project. I just regret I cannot be of some help though I thank you for thinking I can be.
Edit: I don't know if you'll consider this shot in the dark: There's a certain Jeff Pamungkas who filed the report on FightNews.com re John's victory over Acosta recently; it is said that he filed that report from ringside. I don't know him but I'm guessing he's Jakarta-based. The people at FightNews may help you get connected with him.
I'm afraid this is the best I can do. :o
This guy has tremendous skill.I only seen him once but if you beat Marquez you got skill.I would love to see this guy in the States on televised tv to really observe him more.
He got a gift decision expectedly in his country. I highly respect JMM but although I dislike the guy, he was clearly robbed in Indonesia. I hope he gets his rematch soon.
Is he a defensive counter-puncher, or is he very patient behind a jab? I didn't think he was a giant puncher, but not sure how he handled a skilled counter-puncher like Marquez.
He didnt, JMM was robbed.
Joining the others in concurring with you, pal.
As far as I can recall, John is the best Indonesia has ever produced and contributed to world boxing. He should be encouraged by his own countrymen to get a passport and travel to where big time boxing is-- the US. That's THE step towards getting a name for himself and his country, which is the fourth most populated in the entire world and the country with the largest muslim population (though John is a Christian). If he stays home and just keeps on fighting there, his chance at being mentioned in world boxing history diminishes to just being a footnote. And Indonesian boxing shall remain where it is--or worse.

The guy has got a good reputation in Asia, a good record to back it up but I only gave this guy my attention after he defeated JMM.
He needs to get a US promoter and starts fighting in U.S. for exposure. A rematch with JMM if JMM beats Harrison for the WBO belt would be a good start in U.S. A unification and a grudge rematch!Joining the others in concurring with you, pal.

Hes a very skilled boxer. He didnt seem like a great puncher but not that bad of a puncher. No one punch KO power. He is pretty fast too. Not the most exciting guy to watch but hes very talented.
