McCall was such a gifted fighter and probably still is but he needs to get his shit together and dedicate himself fully to boxing. If McCall had Lewis's dedication to the sport, he would have beaten him in the rematch. He is one of the biggest wasted talents in recent heavyweight history. The guy was the Max Baer of his generation. Tremendous right hand punch, great strength, great natural stamina, and a diamond hard chin.
All he lacks is the correct mindset and the ability to say "fuck everything else, I want to be an all time great boxer".
I was at the fight. It's hard to tell how good McCall still is because Wilson was so unwilling to fight back. I seriously thought he was going to take a dive by the 2nd round. McCall hit him on the top of the head in the first round, and Wilson went down, but the incompetent ref never made clear if it was a knockdown or not. McCall just walked away pissed off and the ref looked around confused as Wilson SLOWWWWWWWLY got up. I'm pretty sure the top of the head is a legal blow. But anyway, Wilson slipped into the ropes in round 2 and NOW they called it a knockdown for some reason. Ref was completely whack. Fight basically was McCall following Wilson around and beating on him for 4 rounds until he caught him with about a 4-5 punch combo that knocked Wilson's head this way and that and the ref stopped it a bit too early for my liking, pissing the crowd off. One-sided fight.
