SRL knew he lost that one. He imposed a lot of unfair bargains on Hagler and he got his ass kicked in the fight. All he did was run from Hagler and throw his cute puny punches.
1 reason they gave was the cameramen were in the way of the cornermen for the first three rounds so they couldnt see what hagler was doing, reason why he lost. now thats BULLSHIT
I still dont get the title of the programme.
Does it explain why the judges awarded SRL the win?
Hagler didnt lose, SRL won the fight. Its not like Hagler threw the fight away.
yeah they explained why sorta. they said ray had so much flash in that fight that most ppl just looked at ray instead of both fighters
this is simply
WRONG
15 round fights were stil being sanctioned after hagler-leonard. It was one of the points leonard used his bargaining power to impose. and rightfully so... after 12 rounds he could barely walk
that as well as a much larger ring so he could dance around more and have more space to stay away from the aggressive hagler with hopes of tiring hagler out by making him chase him.
By 1987 the WBA also ruled their bouts to be 12 rounds, you got me with the IBF though, I'm not sure about their rules and regulations on how many rounds a fight would be in 1987.
ibf's last 15 rounder is in aug1988

BOTH the vacant ibf AND wba 160 titles were fought for in late 1987 (as in both after hagler-leonard). both for 15 rounds.
(holyfield qawi 2 was fought in dec87 scheduled for 15 rounds, I guess that would be the last wba title fight scheduled for 15)
they gave really good reason on why u cant blame him for losing, really good 1s
I still dont get the title of the programme.

It wouldn't have gone 15 rounds, simply because Ray Leonard was fighting for the belt.
hagler had 3 belts, 2 of which were fought for on 15 rounds fightss and had been undispted champ for years.
leonard was fighting to beat hagler not to get some green strap.
to beat hagler he gave away money for advantages. including fighting for 12 rounds. the fact that fighting for 12 rounds meant fighting for wbc belt and not for ibf AND wba is an accessory.
Wrong, WBC abolished 15 round fights after the ring fatality (Which wasn't even a WBC sanctioned bout, btw) And what I meant when I said people were saying it never went to 15 rounds because SRL and his camp knew he couldn't make it, I was calling THAT a lie, I didn't say Leonard could have gone 15 rounds.
by 12 or 15 being negotiable I mean that fightign with wbc rules was negotiable and therefore camps could bargain for 12 or 15 rounds fights
of course once you fought wbc, you had to stick to 12 rounds
In 1982, following the Ray Mancini fight, where Deuk Doo Kim died, the WBC reduced the fights to 12 rounds.
My bad for not mentioning the WBC, but it clears up what people were saying about 'SRL not being able to go 15 rounds' because that is just a lie.
that it is the plain truth
just look at what conditions srl was after 12 rounds
and fighting for 12 or 15 was negotiable, leonard camp pushed for 12 rounds, weird, huh?
hagler gave away the fight on the table... 12 rounds... large ring
leonard was the draw and took advantage of this (just like a good businessman) just like he did when offering the rematch to duran on short notice.
hagler only wanted the money and gacve leonard every possibler advantage, which resulted in leonard managing to squeak out the W and never giving a rematch to hagler.
Find me a 15 round WBC title fight held after SRL-Hagler and I'll believe you.
you never mentioned wbc in your previous post, your present answer is therefore not an answer to my post.
howwever i ll bother answering
wbc had not being scheduling 15 rounders for years. (1983? 1984?)
hagler was also ibf and wba champ.
(and after leonard-hagler both title ibf and wba were vacant and were fought for later in 87 on 15 rounds fight)
the last 15 rounds fights take place in 1988.
choosing to fight for the wbc title only and therefore for 12 rounds was decided during negotiations.
Hagler won that fight.
This is the reason why it is unquestionable that Hagler is a machine and why so many question SRL's greatness. He's had gift decisions before but this is the worst.
It was a 12 round fight because they had abolished 15 round fights.

Sugar always says how the judges love the flurry. Thats how he won the rounds by stealing them late...Haggler had the more effective punches though. GLAD I DIDNT HAVE TO JUDGE.
haglers pretty bitter but if he really thought he won im sure he woulda hung around ...
except leonard stay retired so that hagler could not get a rematch... until hagelr retired, then leonard figured it was safe to come back...
Hagler won the first 2-2 1/2 minutes of every round. SRL only won the last minute or 30 seconds of them. I thought Marvin won the fight easily judging on effective agressiveness, clean, effective punching, and ring generalship.
