Toney won the rounds he won in a big way, but Peter won just about all of those close rounds through being the aggressor and actually knocking Toney back when he did connect. Even his jab was forcing Toney backwards. There was only one instance in the fight where Toney landed a combo and it actually caused Peter to hesitate to take a forward step.
This is pro boxing, not the amateur racket. You don't win a round by landing a higher % of punches than your opponent, you win it by doing more noticeable damage to your opponent with those punches than he does to you with his. It's quality over quantity in the pro game. That's why knockdowns have so much sway (10-8) on the judges card. If you stagger a guy in the round, and in that same round he doesn't stagger you once, and aside from that the the guy hasn't completed shut you out, then you win the round.
Peter's frigging jab was forcing Toney back every time it landed. That is more effective than a counter uppercut that doesn't make the opponent even blink. I don't care how crafty, quick, and dangerous looking that uppercut is, the punches that actually force a guy back count much more heavily in scoring.
Now I don't agree with the margin some of the judges had Peter winning by, but he definitely won.

Rounds are scored on 4 things.
Effective Agression, clean punching, defense and ring generalship.
And here is me thinking you knew how to properly score fights.
JT Won the fight, I'm not gonna explain shit nig** watch the tape. If u think the african won, watch the tape. Then rewatch it and smack urself for being so dumb.
bullshit. watch the replay and get that bias out of your heart, toney won that fight. the press row and al bernstein had him winning as well, utter bullshit.
Where do they get the judges anyway? Why don't they take people from the boxing press as judges.
I had Toney winning the fight. 7 rounds for James and 5 rounds for Samueal "I will punch in the back of the head for the KO" Peters.
In the last couple of rounds, Toney was landing more cleaner shots in the majority of those rounds while Peters had only spurts.

agree completely to you Kid Achilles. There is no way Toney won on that fight.
i doubt u know how to score a fight. thats a joke. no way toney won the fight? is that why all the press row scoring had toney winning the fight? is that one of the professional judges that DON KING forgot to pay off had toney winning? is that steve albert had james toney winning?
give me a break. there is no way peter won that fight, and if u knew how to score a fight then u would be agreeing with me instantly
wat r u talkin about. toney was jabbing and doubleing up on his jab. He was fighting beautifully off the ropes. Peter hardly landed any shots. Toney was bobbing and weaving underneath them, and picking them off with his shoulders and arms.
Peter would constantly hold toneys head down and then pound it, and thats how toney was hurt. thats illegal and ref instead scoulded toney for putting his arm on the rope.
Peter did nothing to win more then 5 rounds. There is no way in hell Peter won this fight. Especially with a 10-8 round for toney
The thing i find funnier than anything, is that to try and justify this gift decision for Peter, you talk about the jab, when in fact it was Toney's jab that look EASILY more crisp and effective, he had Peter's head snapping back ALL NIGHT... some of you people need to open your eyes
Toney was getting hit as well, and rocked more than Peter was though. In the rounds where both men landed a similar amount of punches, you have to give the guy who landed the heavier, stronger punches the point.
I mean every time Peter landed his jab it shook Toney's upper body and caused him to take a step or two back. That knd of jabbing racks up points more than a fast, accurate jab that does not press the other guy back.

thats what I scored it as well. blows me away how some people think toney won by several rounds. of course most of them are toney nuthuggers so it shouldnt be a shock. I knew it would come down to toney's skills vs peters' strength and power and it was pefeter's strength and power that overcame toney's skills. close fight but peter eked it out
All of press row had Toney winning, and so did Al Bernstein.
I had it 114-113 Peter......

criteria for scoring : ring generalship, defense, clean punching, and effective aggression. toney won 3 out of the 4 and they were about even with the "effective" aggression. toney was robbed!!!

I agree totally that Peter won fair and square, i watched the fight 3 times and have I no reason for Toney to win that fight. It was a close fight but Peter landed the more damage shots.
Peter's face is predisposed to swelling up and Toney's isn't. It's as simple as that. Henry Cooper's face looked like roadkill against Ali and it wasn't because Ali had a lot of punching power. Some guys just cut easier or have faces that swell more easily.
yeah, that and toney was sticking his jab In his fucking face all night
Not a Toney nut hugger at all, just know what I saw. I can see Peter winning 5 rounds, which makes it pretty close. The 116-111 score made it a robbery though no doubt, especially with the point deduction.

I did not here all this outrage when Valuev beat Ruiz. That was a massive robbery and every one stayed quite.
What dumbass is gonna defend Ruiz?
Toney out jabbed him with jabs that did little to halt his attack. Peter's jabs all, and I mean every one that landed, caused Toney to have to take a backward step or two.
How do you explain Peter's face being all red and swelled up?
Toney out jabbed Peter 3-1.
