Limbo is not a place a fighter with strong career momentum likes to be. But that’s exactly where streaking heavyweight puncher Shannon Briggs (47-4-1, 41 KOs) finds himself, as he waits for IBF Champ Wladimir Klitschko and his team to finalize their end of a bout contract for a title defense on November 11 at Madison Square Garden.
While Briggs and his manager, Scott Hirsch, say they’re being assured behind the scenes by Klitschko’s manager, Shelly Finkel, that the fight is a certainty, rumors and the amount of time going by before finalizing would indicate otherwise.
Despite HBO’s Larry Merchant’s recent unflattering remarks about the Briggs/Klitschko match-up, a surprising number of experts are giving Briggs a real shot to pull off the upset.
Riding the confidence that comes from fighting often and winning by knockout (11 consecutive times), Briggs says he’d like Klitschko to make a decision quickly, so that he can prepare for the shot he’s been aiming for since he began his comeback, or begin looking in other directions.
Are you going to be fighting Wladimir Klitschko in November?
I plan on fighting and beating Wlad on November 11 in Madison Square Garden and winning the World Heavyweight Championship.
Have you received a contract for the fight?
Yes. I got a contract August 10 and we've had an agreement to do this fight since the end of June.
Was there a disagreement over money or a key issue that delayed the contract?
Absolutely not. We agreed on the purse in late June. I was told they switched lawyers during the negotiations and that it was delayed because of trips by Shelly Finkel and Wladimir. Shelly told me it was a done deal.
Were you ever told you actually had the fight one hundred percent?
Funny you ask that because Shelly told me I had the fight “1000%.” I don't know exactly what 1000% is, but judging by how long it’s taking to finalize this fight, it's less than one hundred percent.
Have you heard they offered the fight to (new WBC Champ) Oleg Maskaev?
Of course I've heard it. At first I couldn't believe it because I've always had respect for Shelly and the Klitschkos. I don't know what to think. I believe when you make a deal and give your word, you live by it.
What are your thoughts on Maskaev vs. Rahman?
I think Oleg put on a great performance when everyone thought he was through. I'm one of the few who picked Oleg to win. I have lots of respect for him coming through to beat the odds.
Do you think Oleg could be ready to fight on November 11?
Could he fight? I'm sure he's taken short-notice fights. He's a tough guy and he could fight, but that's different from being 100% ready. There's no way at 37 years old and after a 12-round war you could get back in camp in three weeks at 100%. You need at least two months intensive training, and from what I understand, he's got an injured thumb and bad back. So the bottom line is to push him in to a fight so quick would be to cheat Oleg and the fans.
Would you like to fight Oleg someday?
After I beat Klitschko, I want to fight Oleg, (WBO Champ) Sergei Liakhovich, and (WBA Champ) Nicolai Valuev. I'd love to fight them all. I want to bring all the titles back to the USA and back to Brownsville.
Have you had offers to fight any of the other champions?
Yes. I had offers to flight Valuev and Liakhovich. I had an offer for a non-title fight on HBO and for an eliminator in Germany. I turned them all down because I was assured I had the Klitschko fight.
What's next for Shannon Briggs if the Klitschko fight doesn't come off?
I can't even think that way. I'm already in training for Klitschko and all I can think of is knocking him out on November 11.
What with the bumpage of all these old threads these days? They're irrelevant to the situations today. They only serve as a 'time capsule' of what was going on in boxing at that particular point in time...
Why do people use the word "hatred" everytime someone brings up something accurate about the Klitschkos?
Wlad spent 2004-2008 fighting fringe contenders, he did not unify a damn thing during this time period. He is 244 lbs with a bigger brother watching over him and he still ducked every living thing with a belt during this time period.
Soon as his 6'8 insurance policy dies off he will be back to his true form.
lol were all Champs, former champs, top rated contenders, or mandatories.
In that time the only lower tier guys he fought were williamson and castillo back to back after the Brewster loss which is understandable.
So since you cannot rely upon haye to unseat the brothers, you are hoping that briggs will do it? Or are you merely dredging old news as a way to discredit the Klitschkos? Nice hatred, man. You really need to talk to someone.

Wladimir had 2004-2008 to become undisputed Champ of the world and only fought garbage contenders like Like Ancient Ray Austin and little Calvin Brock.
Briggs was 6'4 with an 11 fight KO strreak when the fight was discussed.... no wonder K2 ducked him.
Why don't you tell Calslappy that he has a new hoe for his stable - Diva Gaye, he can start selling her to feed that nasty coke habit of his... They just discovered $100 million worth of coke in a warehouse in Africa, word is half of it had "To: Pride of Wales" stamped on it.
Briggs doesn't deserve a title fight. He's fought bums and thinks he now is deserving of a title fight. There are many other fights I'd like to see before one with Briggs. Briggs though can blame himself, had he taken a real fight he might have had the title fight he's crying about now.
You should want to see wlad in there with a heavyweight near his size, I mean damn, who doesnt want to see an upset??
I dont honestly see anyone else with as agood a chance as briggs. Hes known for knocking muthaphukkas out, and wlad is a good boxer so most heavyweights dont have a chance out boxing him.

LOL.. If Briggs asthmatic steroid @ss could have beaten little tiny Sultan, whom he bested by 55 lbs and 6 inches, he would have gotten a chance to fight a Klitschko. Instead he got knocked down by little Sultan, lost every second of the fight, threw two punches around. After that he took 2 years off, came back and tested for steroids. He has been fighting guys with a 9-18 records lately and knocking them out. Yeah, Wlad was running from that...
Where is your Gaye hero? We haven't heard one queef from her lately, not since Wlad called her a bitch in the yt video...

Ok, I see the point that Klitschko lost to some below average opposition also. That cannot be excused, you're right. But the ratio of excellent performances from Klitschko outweighs the bad ones. He's beaten good caliber people like Barrett, Peter, and Byrd twice in excellent fashion. Remember also that Byrd was considered the trickiest fighter in the division and honestly, as close as there was to a legitimate champion in Lewis' wake. Klitschko wiped the floor with him both times.
Meanwhile, Briggs career best is giving Lewis problems with his handspeed for one and a half rounds before Lewis went up a notch.
Yeah.
I'm 99.9% sure he'd knock Brewster, Sanders, and Puritty out if they ever were so inclined to: A.) Leave their wheelchair, B.) Leave the Golfcourse and retirement, and C.) Grow a new retina.

I really hope this fight happens.......And I really hope even more that Briggs KOs Wlad......however unlikely it may seem.
now im just wondering, whats your problem with wlad?

Agreed but he really had Lewis hurt reall bad and if his stamina would have help him up he would have beaten Lewis but it didint happen...
I think it will actually be good for the Heavyweight division if Wlad can unify all the titles and fight until he is 34-35 without losing...
i think it is very likely he will retire without losing another fight, whenever that may be. realistically to unify the titles he almost needs somebody else to unify two while he held 2 and fight each other, so somebody else needs to step up otherwise itd be difficult to get all 4 one at a time.
i really wonder to what extent he wants to become the unified champion, is he willing to sacrifice to make it happen, or would it just be icing on the cake of what is to him an already successful career?
I think it will actually be good for the Heavyweight division if Wlad can unify all the titles and fight until he is 34-35 without losing...Wlad is younger, more skilled, has the power, and is more marketable than the rest...If Wlad was American, he would be the "Oscar" of the division...not saying he still couldn't, just think he would of been better off since it wouldn't have taken a whole lot of marketing other than show a picture, say he is "American" with a Gold Medal, and is Champion of the World...he can still be very popular, I just think his people suck at marketing him in America...there is a problem with every fight being on cable, but he still could be a lot more popular than he is now...hell, wouldn't even mind him fighting a "novice" on regular television, though this would have to be a fighter that looks built to fool the viewer that doesn't really know jack about boxing.
If I was wlad I would take him very seriously and IM sure Emmanuel Steward will have a great strategy for this fight. I have just recently seen Lewis-Briggs and Briggs has Lewid hurt really bad and almost knocked him out in the 1st and 2nd rounds.
do you have a link to the fight?
only problem there is briggs power has looked far from great when he's stepped up in competition. he's never been able to knockout a top 15 heavyweight. look at jeremy williams,,,his power looked great as well against class c and lower guys but he also failed every time he stepped up. to measure power you also have to look at the guys theyre knocking out. that said,,I still think briggs has power,,,but its overrated in my opinion

i would rather see wlad-sergie or maybe wlad-oleg (which seems to be to early for him to get back in the ring) than wlad-briggs. they need to start to unify the titles.
that is why i hoped rahman would have pull of the win, cause they had it all figured out, rahman was gonna make 4 mil to fight klitschko, and it would have been the biggest hw fight in awhile..
