Not really, but I thought I would get the overly excited tread title out of the way before some other spaz did it.
Anyway, I thought the stoppage was unwarranted with only a minute left, but I understand why the ref did it. It wasn't like Alicea was going to suddenly KO Cherry, so no harm, no foul.
I like Cherry and, unlike some recently retired heavyweight champs, he didn't quit when he broke a part of his body crucial to his future. I also like that he learned that he does, indeed, possess a left hook. Maybe we'll get to see more of it in the future. I hope we do.
He actually looked better to me after he hurt his hand. His jab was quick, much sharper than it had been. His left hook was also very effective. I think that Edner Cherry would go further in boxing than the one we're used to.
I think his main problem as a fighter is his insistence on a slow, weak jab followed by a powerful straight right. Sure, it is effective enough, but he is so repetitive with it. I couldn't imagine how badly an elite counter puncher would kill him.
i'd like to see him in against jesus chavez or juan diaz

There are different measures of success. With not much more than pure heart Gatti won a couple of belts, secured his place in history as blood and guts fighter, filled seats, was known outside normal boxing fan circles and made a few million dollars. Cherry should pray he's as unsuccessful as Gatti. That would still make him more successful than most boxing champions have been.
a FEW million? more luck bucket loads of millions. lol.
but great post. i agree
I don't think he's anything super, but he's always entertaining. I like that in a fighter. I'm interested in seeing if he starts using his left more now that he sees it works. That could boost him in my estimation.
While it might make him less exciting,I liked what he said about his gym work, that hes working on just being consistent.
KOs are great, but It'll be better for his career to just win consistently.
...but he won't be very successful in boxing just like Gatti.

That's what I'm saying, he's like a poor man's Gatti. Skilled enough to win against lesser opposition and offensive enough to always be exciting, but he won't be very successful in boxing just like Gatti.
o, well then i agree 100%

Cherry seems like a nice guy, but he's nothing special
i think he is something special. certainly not skill wise (although he is solid) but hes action packed and entertaining. that doesnt come along every day...

he is a very exciting fighter and i can say with 90% assurance, u will see this man in a FOTY sooner or later. he has plenty of time left and he has a very exciting and action oriented style.
and i dont think he broke his hand. at max a fracture.
i think he just hurt it badly. he is a pretty soldi fighter though. i have always enjoyed. and atlas was right, i always thought this guy was in his 30's. i had NO IDEA he was that young.
