Reliable sources have informed that undefeated pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr will face welterweight king Carlos Baldomir on November 4. The Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, will host the bout which will broadcast live on HBO PPV. Mayweather, his advisor Leonard Ellerbe and Sycuan's Willie Tucker and Glenn Quiroga were unavailable for immediate comment. Much more to follow, until then Remember where you heard it first! (4:22 PM EST)
He said fuck Spinks and went with Baldomir. This is great news.
First of all, Baldomir is a legitimate puncher. He's not a big puncher, but he's somewhat heavy handed and if he can get at you, he will wear you down and take the fight out of you. I dont care if he only has thirteen knockouts in his career, the guy can hit. Gene Fullmer only had 24 knockouts in a career that spanned 64 fights and he was a tremendous puncher. You can't just look at the numbers.
As for Cotto, I am not that impressed with him and consider him a B+ talent with good skills, solid power, but a chin that will eventually be his downfall. Ricardo Torres had him in serious trouble in their fight and if he was a better finisher he would have likely knocked the Cotto bandwagon off the road. I really believe Baldomir would outwork Cotto, wear him down, and stop him late.
Whether you want to recognize it or not, Baldomir is one of the four best welterweights in the world, and the current undisputed champion. He will give Mayweather a good fight and, due to his strength advantage and style, might even beat him.
Baldo has no chance against PBF or Cotto. If you're judging Baldo on his wins over Zab and Gatti, you need to consider these two fighters are just a shadow of who they were. Baldo is a tought 35 or so yr old man, but that's what he is an old man. A live young fighter like Cotto, Quintana or Williams can take him out with good body work. There's no way in hell Baldo can out box PBF, PBF is gonna make him look like an amateur and end his career. As far as Cotto's chin, you might be right, but for now we need to give him the benefit of the doubt until we see him fight without killing himself the day before to make weight.

Baldy vs Floyd, this is more exiting than Floyd vs Stinks. Here we are expecting to see Baldy going forward and being the agressor. Baldy will be bringing the fight to Floyd. Whoever wins doesn't matter, this fight is going to be exiting. Just thinking about the fireworks and the explosions are getting me exited already.
i totally agree

if baldy or spinks were to beat floyd it would be baldy by tko. but that's not likely to happen at all. but it's likely for spinks to win more rounds than baldy would. what i'm saying is that i think baldy has a better chance of beating floyd but spinks would be the tougher opponent.
I like the idea of Mayweather fighting Baldomir. Although Baldi isn't the biggest threat at welterweight, he is the recognized champion at the weight. For us that are not really fans of PBF, this could be a turning point. I wouldn't mind seeing somebody clean out the divisions on his way up, rather than just picking a paper champ in order to claim a belt. I would really like to root for Floyd. Maybe a war with Baldomir could help that along.
Oh...now I see. :) BTW Restless good post before this one.
thank you sir
Your sig has ippo in it, who is more of a Baldi / Gatti type fighter whos fighting Vorg the amazingly skilled fighter.. If your sig is true baldis gonna win = P
lol.. that show really is getting a following, cool to see as i've heard a couple people started watching boxing thanks to the show
this is better news.. if you look at recent events, he should be fighting Baldomir over Spinks.. if this follows through, then i'm happy to see this, he must've seen my sig ;)
not to mention, this will be a more excited fight, match-up wise, then would be the case with Spinks

This is the bottom line of the entire argument..
it's basically opinions really,
Bozo.. you feel Spink's cause you think his "boxing" will be more difficult for Mayweather, whereas i think myself and amagnin, at least, feel like Baldomir's the better challenge due to the fact that Carlos is the bigger puncher of the two and the bigger volume puncher as well.. i think i'm somewhat seeing it..
thinking it over, both opinions seem, for the most part, acceptable. i still think after seeing one Spink's fight in the last year and a half, and not exactly an "awe-inspiring" one, you're giving Spinks way too much credit.
And I think you're giving Baldomir WAY too much credit based off a narrow win over Judah.
He's slow of hand and foot, telegraphs his shots, and doesn't have the power to stop or trouble Floyd.
A good career move from Floyd if this turns out to be true, he'll solidify his status as the genuine champion at 147 (supposing he wins, which is likely), placing the onus on Hatton to deal with any unfinished business at 140, should there be any.
What a shame that such a thread should be YET AGAIN commandeered and trashed by this site's resident boorish moron. When I saw 11 pages I was delighted, thinking it was going to be 11 pages of insightful debate. Instead it's 11 pages of a little boy repeating himself and using name-calling in the place of civil discourse. Some people just never get it, do they?
And funny how eager you were to read and comment.
Because it's not like any other Floyd Mayweather topics have degenerated into long debates now have they?
Once again, if you're reading this, you're PWNED.

Was that addressed to me... I don't think I called anybody any names???
I agree the possibility is far from likely, but who is MORE likely to land an accumulation of punches. The guy that walks forward and tries to punch or the guy that runs around the ring economically counter-punching.

Really seems to me that it is right on topic proving WHY we think it was a less impressive win. And cleraly it is YOUR OPINION that Spinks' win was equally or more impressive. I can respect your opinion as long as you admit that it is just that... an opinion
We've beat this to death, and you're not grasping that winning enough rounds early is just as good as winning the late rounds, or trading rounds back and forth.
In a fight that's won by one round, it makes little difference.
Missing the point again. You and numbnuts were trying to act like Baldy's win over Judah was so much more impressive than Spinks' win over Karmazin. It wasn't.
And then somewhere along the way you both went off topic trying to take away from Spinks' win by dwelling on the fact he faded late. He faded late, because he was on early winning more rounds and had been out of the ring a year prior to the fight.

I'm glad he's fighting Baldomir over Spinks... not because it's a tougher fight, because I don't think it is, but more to the fact that he can be Welterweight champion with a win rather than have to listen to all of the naysayers bitch about him not doing anything at Welterweight.
Tis a good point Gringo. ;)
Baldomir is not in the class of Cotto or Margarito? First of all, I would favor Baldomir over Cotto on the grounds of superior chin alone, as well as the fact that Cotto's chin scares me a little. It would be a very competitive match, but Baldomir, who proved himself to be superior to Zab Judah, is definitely on Cotto's level.
Margarito I'm not so sure of, since he's a harder puncher than Cotto and really has a chin of his own. I think he would wear Baldomir down and stop him in the mid rounds after landing huge punch after huge punch. Baldomir would be game until the end though.
Baldomir is the champion at welterweight, and is competitive with anyone listed on this thread. He proved that against Judah, who I think would lose again in a rematch.
I think picking him to beat Cotto is a big stretch, and with Judah's loss to Spinks, I think it's clear that a win over him isn't a lot to write home about.
You're over rating Baldomir big time me thinks.
