Rivera has been calling out Margarito, and at a cheaper price, only asking for 1 mill. Although I doubt Margarito will take this fight because it makes sense, it would be very cool if it happened. Who would you pick? Margarito would have to move up to 154lbs though he should do it comfortably as he is a huge welterweight. I think this would be a slugest. :boxing: 50/50
i thought we were talking about the other rivera. whoops.
Haha, we were. Though someone else brought up Cosme Rivera since he's fighting Margarito. So I said, that guy sucks balls and shouldn't be fighting him. :D This topic is about Jose Rivera though :)
Cosme Rivera? That's the same guy Zab put down with the 1st punch he landed? I'm sure he'll stand much a chance against Margarito.
i thought we were talking about the other rivera. whoops.
this fite would be a toss up for me. shit rivera is one tough cookie and has the qualities to ko margarito. tony should pull a mayweather and avoid this fite. :boxing:  :boxing:
who cares who wins at this point lets just get those two into the ring together. that would be one hell of a fight!
i think the match up between antonio rivera and margatio is a fight fans match up.
make this happen, plus margarito needs to be fighting someone that has a belt, there is no reason other than a tune up fight for Margarito to be fighting cosme rivera, although he is scheduled to fight Josh Clottey which is a good match up, but if i was Margarito or apart of his team i would be trying to grab ahold of another belt. even if it's in another weight class.
too many times in boxing do we see boxers hold out for money or certain fights and it puts a dullness on their career, at least from a fans point of view. it also takes a little out of them because they spend too much time out of the ring. although margartio has fought he sure as hell wasn't challenged in his last fight and he wont be challenged in his next fight either.at least it appears to look that way. i think he should scrap the fight with Cosme and he should go straight towards Clottey which is a good match up and then go right after Antonio Rivera.
Margarito should be more concerned about winning and staying sharp verses what big name fighter he's going to land for his next fight(so far none). Antonio Rivera is a little bit of a high risk and low reward other than his belt, but we all know that A.Rivera isnt a big name and isnt a big draw, but with those two fighting on TV that could change with an exciting fight, which i think would happen if these two got into the ring.
from a fans perspective this is a solid fight to watch, being a match maker and guiding someones career it's a risk.
Here's the open letter to refresh some people's minds who haven't read it yet. Rivera's challenge to Margarito...
Open Letter from Jose Antonio Rivera to Antonio Margarito & Bob Arum
Dear Antonio & Bob,
How can you be the most feared fighter in the world? I’ve made it well known several times that I’ll fight you for my WBA Super Welterweight Title. Just name the time and place, as long as the deal is right.
Hey, amigo, I must be the most feared Super Welterweight in the world because none of the top 154-pounders like Oscar De La Hoya, Cory Spinks and Shane Mosley want a piece of me.
Lace them up and move up to my weight class. You’re a great fighter and we’d renew the Puerto Rican-Mexican rivalry that always turns out to be a memorable slugfest. It’s a fight boxing fans all over the world would love to watch.
I am a three-time World Champion. My WBA Super Welterweight Title winning bout May 6 against Alejandro Garcia on Showtime is the leading 2006 Fight of the Year. I dropped Garcia five times and he’d only been floored once coming into our fight.
I work fulltime as a Court Officer to support my family. How many other World Champions have a fulltime job? I work hard. I have overcome many obstacles and now I want a big payday. I have earned that and you’re my meal ticket, Antonio.
Mr. Arum, I read your quote, “Anybody with the guts to fight Antonio is fine with me.” Well, I have the guts to fight Antonio. You know my promoter, Don King. I’m sure that you two can work out the details. I’ll fight him in his backyard if that’s what it takes to make it happen. You offered Mayweather 8 million to fight and I will do it for 1 million.
Antonio let’s get it on. So far, you’ve talked about fighting everybody, but me. Here’s your chance to fight a real World Champion.
Waiting to hear from you,
“El Gallo” Jose Antonio Rivera
Three-Time World Champion
I was very impressed with Riveras win over Garcia and think he would beat Margarito too..........Albeit in a very good contest. It is a pick em fight though.
Yeah I think Rivera's boxing skills plus the fact that he packs a punch could see him win this. On the other hand, Margarito is no slouch with boxing skills either and definitely can brawl. I guess it would come to who can take the other man's shot best. Though they seem so similar in many ways that I'd love to see this fight happen.
I go with Rivera :) :) And if u watch thereplay u will see that Jose got hit by Garcia when he was backing away, it was like he thought the punching stopped and he relaxed for a second... and realize this, he got hit flush on the chin by a totally unexpected punch but he got up instantly and was not hurt. He definitely takes a good shot.
At 154 Rivera packs a hard punch, did you see how he dropped Terra with a jab? On the same token he got clipped and dropped by Terra so it should make a helluva fight.
Oh yeah Rivera can punch no doubt. I just think Margarito has a good chin, a better chin than Garcia.
At 154 I think its a close fight. I favor Margarito with his two main advantages: power and punch volume. Rivera can be a crafty boxer at times, but he an also be baited into a brawl. If Rivera can stay disciplined and box for 12 rounds he could win... otherwise Margarito by KO/TKO
