On October 7th, live on Showtime Championship Boxing, Diego 'Chico' Corrales will take on none other than Joel Casamayor for the third time. This rubbermatch occurs in the wake of the collapse of Corrales' rubbermatch with Jose Luis Castillo when Castillo failed to make weight.
In their first meeting, 'El Cepillo' stopped Corrales, sending him to the canvas twice and cutting his mouth viciously with accurate punches. The damage to Corrales' mouth prompted Dr. Margaret Goodman to stop the fight. Corrales protested mightily and a rematch took place five months later. This time, in one of the most interesting plot twits in boxing history, the fighters exchanged trainers. Corrales again went down in the competitive rematch, but won a split-decision. Corrales seemed to win the fight clearly, albeit closely.
Chico then went on to win against two of the top fighters in the sport, Acelino Freitas and Jose Luis Castillo. He rose up on the pound-for-pound lists and was leaving Joel Casamayor to eat his proverbial dust. Corrales did suffer a brutal 4th round KO to Castillo in their rematch, but was redeemed somewhat when Castillo failed to make weight for their 3rd fight.
Meanwhile, El Cepillo kept himself busy fighting Almazbek Raiymkulov, Antonio Ramirez, and Lamont Pearson. Casamayor showed his age vs Raiymkulov, scraping by with a draw in a fight he could have just as easily lost. Then against Pearson on ESPN2, Casamayor looked flat while landing only 19% of his shots against a man that was not supposed to be on his level. Pearson quit after he was cut around the eye, leaving Casamayor with a TKO win. The years of making weight and the fights with Corrales seemed to have taken their toll.
Corrales was the in-studio guest with Brian Kenny for Casamayor-Pearson, and after being verbally assaulted by Casamayor, Chico stated accurately that Joel did not look good enough to warrant a rubbermatch with himself. Apparently, Casamayor managed to get under Chico's skin because Diego Corrales has taken the fight against his fading nemesis. This move is questionable on Corrales' part, who instead could be looking at fresh opponents such as Juan Diaz. Granted, Diego took the kind of punishment that can forever change a fighter during those 14 rounds with Jose Luis Castillo. Still, if Corrales is going to show that he is done at the top level, he might as well have granted the boxing public that collapse vs a new face as opposed to someone he has already beaten.
I'm not sure about stopping Casa but Corrales was pouring it on because he knew that the fight could be stopped and knew that one way to prolong the fight and possibly avoid stoppage was by being active. That was the fight in which I became a big Corrales fan, even though he lost. I loved his grittyness and heart, he was begging for 1 more round when they stopped it but I do agree with the stoppage being a good call.
yes me too, he really impressed me, before that fight i only knew him for being picked apart by PBF, although he keep getting up. that was a good fight card, i beleiv eit was on the Toney/Holyfield undercard. a fight i wish wouldn't happen, but had to watch
Didn't he get up and then Put Casamayor on the deck, and looked like he was about to stop him, before it was stopped
It might have been I'm not sure.I gotta take another look at the tape, I have it somewhere, but its on VHS and I'm gonna have to look for my old VHS player too, ROFL. I dont know if Corrales knocked Casamayor after he was down twice or after he was knocked down the first time.

Actually other than the cut in the mouth the first fight was pretty competitive, Chico was floored but he didn't really look hurt and he is always dangerous.
I'm not sure what the effects of the two Castillo fights will have on Corrales but if he is the same fighter that fought Castillo I would wager heavily on Corrales.

bottom line is...
I could see Corrales beating Casamayor by boxing or by brawling. Boxing worked for him in the 2nd fight so I think it would work now. I thnk all those amateur bouts and years of making weight have taken a toll on Casamayor. If he starts slow, I'm not very confident he'll ever have time to get back into the fight.
I don't think I scored Corr-Casa II, Scap. I just remember it looked like a clear but close UD for Corrales. I'm only hoping that Corrales is damaged enough to give Casa a 50-50 shot to win this.
I think Corrales has more left ih his tank...the end...casamayor is a great warrior but if he gets in there and looks the way he did a couple weeks ago...no shot.....
Yeah I always thought Corrales was unable to box Castillo. But he was able to do it pretty well vs Casamayor for whatever reason (Goosen's inside knowledge) and if both Corrales and Casa are equally faded as compared to their 1st fight, then this one should go the same way.
Maybe I'm giving Corrales too much credit. Actually I could see him forgetting his boxing due to Castillo mindset he'as had for so long now. Hard to tell...I'm rootin for my boy Casa though, dirty headbutts and lowblows and everything.

Well if your looking for a 50-50 shot for Joel this fight fan thinks youve got it!
Lightweight-When was the last time Chico Corrales boxed his way to victory? He did it in 1 fight a long time ago and barely hung on for the W...the championship rounds were not pretty-down right ugly and awkward.
Look at his last two fights with Castillo...both phone booth wars...I have always said that Corrales is not a boxer and people mistake his lengthy frame and his long reach for that of a boxer but he has never been one and whatever pure boxing skills he has he may have forgotten by now...especially with the style at which his last 2 bouts were fought.
If I have a lean in this U pickem fight it is for Casamayor-your gonna be a happy man-I have a feeling.
Now if Roy could just get iced one more time I would be most grateful...I kid the conservative.
Either way you put it the lights and superfeather weight's are showing the Welterweights how it should be done. They are each fighting each other with little of the BS that we now see in the welters which is actually much deeper in talent.
I said in a post a month or so back in a thread "Which is the best division". I posted that Superfeather and lightweight are the best because all the tops fight each other and welter is the most talent rich division. Corrales is keeping the tradition of the lighter weights fighting it out in the ring and not at press conferences.

I think Casa as some have already said is a fighter who fights to the level of his comp and if there is a fighter I believe he gets up for it will be Diego Corrales.
Lets look at Corrales...he has taken two severe beating in a row...hell his last fight he was absolutely destroyed, taken apart, fucked up the ass, etc...
What does Diego have left?
Im not saying Casa is going to win but Ill tell you what Corrales is going to be the favorite which tells this betting man that there is only one play in this fight and that is with the Cuban.
What part of Texas do you live in...Im flying into Houston for work in a few days...got any cool bars I shouldnt pass up?

I agree completely
come on scap
sure casa was a badass afighter at one time
but look at his lat 3 fights
he's aged from 2004 to present

You know your shit there is little doubt lightweight but I think your wrong here...
I dont think Diego has proved he is the better fighter...the more exciting fighter no fucking doubt but the better fighter...Im just not so sure.
I think Diego won the second fight and in both fights with Casa I rooted for Chico vigorously but lets face it...in that second fight Diego HUNG on too win that fight...by the hair on his chinny chin chin.
Casamayor was guilty of starting too late just like he was against Freitas...
This is an extremely dangerous fight and one in which I think you can choose no clear winner.
I dont think Chico should box in this one...he needs to get in a phone booth with Casamayor...even a little distance like the one he fought JL at in the second fight is going to give Chico problems...

This fight shouldn't be that dangerous for Diego, and frankly as a Casamayor fan the 'question' was answered in their 2nd fight. The answer is Corrales is simply the better fighter now. He was able to adapt.

Corrales by decision. Casamayor looked horrendous in his last fight against a weak opponent.
i wouldn't say casa was "horrendous"
he was obviously more aggressive in this fight than he was in his last few
although i agree casa has aged to much, his legs and hands have slowed down too much
chico takes the third fight
