i have no idea, but if i were to guess i would say because the ring resembles a box? and before they fought in the ring we use currently, it was called fisticuffs or brawling?
I thought the word boxing comes from having to fight in a box shaped area...hence boxing..
just a guess tho

now i feel like a retarded dumbass.....instead of just lookin like one :D
*AHEM*

According to "Word Detective", it is not known with any real degree of certainty where the word "boxing" came from; but:
One possibility is that "box" came from an old Germanic root ("boki") which later appeared in Dutch and German words meaning "to strike."
Though we think of "box" as a verb, it first showed up in English around 1385 as a noun meaning "blow," now heard almost exclusively in the phrase "a box on the ears."
Hope that helped.
