vargas whos a true middleweight and walks around @ 185 looked like a monster at welterweight but i think it was partly because he was naturally bigger then everybody..his best wins were over ike quartey (who started out @ 140) and yory boy campas whos always chubby during his fights and probably could make 135! defintely 140..vargas trys to overpower/pressure and when he fought trinidad he paid for it..i think vargas was a beast @ 147 because he was fighting much smaller men..the great ones move up in weights and continue to dominate like DE LA HOYA MAYWEATHER JONES JR HEARNS..was vargas really THAT but the back ruined him..or did he LOOK good because he was a middleweight fighting @ 160
Fuck that. Credit to who? Atrocious Fernando Vargas? That fat Mexican who went 0-4 with 4 KO's against Oscar, Shane and Tito?
LOL. Fuck Vargas.
man who do u go for?
I would say his chin is pretty solid. He seems to be pretty vulnerable to the left hook though. Tito, Oscar, and now Mosley all cought him good with the left hook. Those were punches that would have knocked anybody at that wieght down though.
This talk about a weak chin is crap. He took a good portion of Tito's shots and never was down against DLH.
he did go down against DLH...did u watch the fight?
What a stupid thread. He loses to Mosley and now his career is crap right?
This talk about a weak chin is crap. He took a good portion of Tito's shots and never was down against DLH. It's well known he isn't what he used to be with the bulging disc in his back. So what he goes down against Mosley. He's older than his calendar age. Doesn't take a genius to realize that.
Get real. He gave Tito hell and probably would have won if it wasn't for that late low blow by Tito and has wins over Quartey and Winky.
He simply took on too much, too soon.
How long have you been watching Vargas?
most mexican fighters are nott skilled enough to move through multiple divisions, their sole advantage at times is their heart and size. The size factor eventually catches up to them around the age of 28-31 as the bodies metabolism shifts. Vargas didn't have to fight his weight he was only 5'10 so his greed is what made his career short. Blowing up to 185 at a 5'10 frame of course you are going to have back and health problems. Oscar was the only mexican fighter to successfully progress through multiple divisions but he was still a notch below hop, roy, mosley, trinidad, and floyd. So vargas can blame no one for his loss but himself because no fighter should gain more than 5-7lbs on the day of the fight gaining 10-15lbs is dangerous and will shorten your career :boxing:
u know what..ur extacly right..de la hoya was by far the most skilled mexican ever
Vargas began his career at 147. Some of the fighters that Vargas fought went up to middleweight and walk around at the same walking weight as him. Fighters like De La Hoya, Wright, Trinidad, Quartey, Castillejo, etc.
The career of Vargas got fucked over in the same fashion as David Reid, where he was pushed to fast in some cases and his battle with weight has destroyed his body.
The only fighter where Vargas was dominated was the last Mosley fight. He was in the fight and stood a chance to win against Trinidad, De La Hoya and Mosley 1. What other fighter at his age (28) has fought De La Hoya, Wright, Trinidad, Quartey and Mosley?
He needs to get his due, but I doubt he will get to hall of fame unless he really does something big with the rest of his career.
yeah for real most guys that are gripeing that vargas aint shit are also the same guys that dont know he was youngest member to win the us boxing tourny at 17 or some shit beating out melrick taylor
he was also youngest person ever to win a title at 154
so to say vargas didnt do much would be wrong the thing is he did TOO much TOO soon and it crippled him
He was thrown in too early against trinidad and de la hoya, thats what ended him

I think that you have it partially right. Also to me, Vargas is a fighter that maximized what skills he had. He had some power, a solid chin, and minimal boxing ability. His biggest attribute was his heart. The word "heart" is thrown around a lot in boxing and rightfully so as any man with the courage to step into the squared circle has a certain level of heart. But Vargas was different, he literally subscribed to the idea that you would have to carry him out of the ring before he would quit. To the contrary of your argument I believe his heart propelled him to come forward constantly against Trinidad and suffer a brutal beating. IMO, he would also have had a better career had he simply stayed down in the 1st round against Trinidad rather than soaking up punishment. Also, if Trinidad doesn't commit the most genius/dirty move I have witnessed in championship boxing (the low blow after knockdown) Vargas might have been champ. Vargas was truly a boxer that maximized what ability he had, but just wasn't as talented as the guys who beat him. Even with that talent disparity he still gave those guys the fights of their lives which is a testament to the warrior he is.
even as a big vargas fan i couldn't argue with what you say there!!
excellent post!!
