ICEMAN DIARY ENTRY: July 12, 2006- Corey Spinks' manager (Kevin Cunningham) was interviewed for a boxing website today where he was talking about Corey's options and future and when someone mentioned possibly fighting to unify their two titles against WBA champion Jose Rivera he made it out like fighting him would be a step backward for them, like they are these big superstars now, and what they really want is to fight Oscar DeLahoya or Floyd Mayweather. I have news for Kevin, though. Corey is two steps backwards for Oscar at his point. And Mayweather just convincingly beat the guy that stopped Corey in his previous fight so... you know? I think fans of this boxing world would certainly agree when I say there is absolutely no way in this world you would ever see Jose Antonio Rivera run around the ring for the entire last round of a fight that was razor close on the score cards like Corey did against Karmazin the other day. He didn't even do it when he was in the 12th and way ahead on points against a dangerous guy like Terra Garcia, did he? Boxing on huge networks like Showtime and HBO is all about the entertainment value that you bring and, believe me, the average fan is not really enjoying a guy coming into the ring with a four minute ring walk while dancing with a rapper only to turn around and literally run for the entire last round of a close fight. I actually like Corey's boxing skills and think he is an exceptional boxer but I think they are seriously overestimating the value of his win last weekend over Roman Karmazin. Cunningham called Karmazin "the best 154 pounder in the world." Better than Oscar? Quartey? Vernon Forrest? Mosely? Ahh... I don't know about that, my man. In any event, Jose is more than willing to go to St. Louis and risk his title against Spinks there and as long as the judge isn't working our fight that somehow, inexplicably, gave Spinks the last round of his fight with Karmazin, saving the fight for him instead of it letting it be what it was supposed to be: a draw.
With fair and competent judging we are discussing an interview right now with Karmazin's manager instead of Cunningham.
He Is A Superstar
Wins Over Karmazin, mayorga, picirillo, karmazin, judah Prove U Are
Umm, I dunno. A superstar is a guy who entertains the crowd and wins in spectacular fashion. He has never KO'ed a significant fighter. Plus, you named Karmazin twice and none of the aforementioned wins were by sizeable margins.
Great read Ice, its always good to hear a trainer who believes in his fighter. I personally think that even though Rivera is noticeably slower than Cory, he still has a very tough style for Spinks. I would pick Rivera because he seems to be a much stronger fighter at 154. Rivera has pop in his shot and is very strong minded. I would pick Rivera by decision.
yes sir....
Actually I was kind of pulling for Corey, I always liked him. As far the ring entrance. It TAKES AWAY from boxing and it is safe to say that the average PPV ticket buying fan does NOT want to see that over and over. As far as Jose... you see, Jose is not a slick, flashy fighter etc and in many peoples mind they take that as a bad thing... but what he had on his side is something that so called better fighters often do not have... Jose has that will, the drive, no fear, willingness to get hurt to win. His conditioning is second to nobody and his tenacity is impressive. He will beat better skilled fighters because of it, too.
ditto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will put all 20million...
I was very disappointed at Spinks in the Karmazin fight. I thought Spinks was gonna totally dominate the fight with superior boxing skills, but then started wearing out. Against a guy like Rivera that could be fatal in the fight. Keep in mind Rivera has POWER at 154, he dropped Terra with a jab! I can't imagine what he would do to glass jaw Spinks if they get it on.
in points I have, that Rivera has power, and will KNOCK OUT Spinks or Mayorga...DLT needs to back away from the crack pipe and spend some time looking for a clue...no offense but do you take my bet...20 million points Rivera knocks out Spinks or Mayorga if either one happens....
Hey Ice...
Things you can GUARANTEE from Jose Rivera; He will always be in spectacular shape. He will always come t fight. He will never run to protect his lead. What more can you ask?
absolutely...Jose Antonio Rivera is a BLUE COLLAR guy all the way. You can tell by how he handles himself outside the ring...at least thats my impression. I kinda agree with the one guy who says that most fighters at 154 will avoid him like the plague...he works the body and cuts off the ring, he's got a solid chin, works off the jab, and solid defense..and now he has a belt...he's too risky....for most of these guys who are too big a puss to bring it and lay what they got on the line...I know Rivera will...who's gonna man up......
stupid just stupid does that make ya feel better
I was say G.A.Y but the filter was not letting it through but what the fuck does what the stupid shit with basketball as boxing and fantasy match up have to do this thread you fucking dipshit.
rivera wears down spinks in the later rounds and gets the stoppage.
the only reason spinks' people don't want to entertain the idea of this match up is because of the risk/reward factor. even though rivera is the WBA champ, the money isnt there like it would be against a DLH, but DLH isnt going to fight Spinks, it would be a boring fight, plus Spinks aint done nothing to entice DLH to a match up there is no money in Corey Spinks. Spinks is trying to cash in on other peoples name.
a fight with Mayweather isnt going to happen, Mayweather isnt going to fight a guy like spinks, 1: no money 2: bad match up their fighting styles would make it a posing match 3: spinks lost to judah as mentioned before and was ko'd, a match up between mayweather (judah conqueror) and the guy that judah ko'd in his last win (spinks), get out of town with that bull mess. maybe if spinks makes himself a force to reckoned with, but other than that, the only fight for Spinks would be to fight Rivera. if he could beat Rivera (which i doubt) then he might have some leverage in making certain fights happen. other than that he should take what he can get and get his head out of lala land..........
Rivera by 10th round stoppage................
DLT I think you are relying on what Spinks did against Mayorga too much. Mayorga is a tough fighter, but superior boxers have always been his kryptonite. Rivera is not that type of fighter. In fact, I think Rivera is more like Karmazin in that they don't have 1 punch KO power... more like accumulation of punches. Also if you saw the Karmazin fight then you know Spinks' jaw is suspect at best. The only solid punch Karmazin landed almost dropped him.
I still disagree with all of you.
All of you keep trying to compare Rivera to Karmazin but he wont give Spinks those same problems because he isnt 2 inches taller then Spinks, he doesnt have those long arms, and he has also moved up in weight. He also is not as patient and as much of a thinker as Karmazin. Rivera would get eaisly outboxed
I would like to see Alcine take on Spinks. It won't happen but it would be a step in the right direction for Alcine.Nice pick I would like that fight as well. Alcine seems the better athlete but not as skilled as Spinks. I would have Spinks by close UD like by 3 rounds. In actually a good fight maybe mix it up a bit in a fight that Spinks would show some grit.
Things you can GUARANTEE from Jose Rivera; He will always be in spectacular shape. He will always come t fight. He will never run to protect his lead. What more can you ask?How do you think style wise this is going to work for Rivera. Spinks is not going to come forward against him and is going to try and box like never before. How do you aproch this fight. Can Rivera cut off the ring enough to trap Spinks. Can he keep Spinks from finding a confortable working range. Can your man time spinks to land first. How are you as his trainer going to combat these elements.
He Is A Superstar
Wins Over Karmazin, mayorga, picirillo, karmazin, judah Prove U Are
picirillo? and Judah ko him the fuck out, and he ran agienst karmazin. Cory spinks can't dominate or win decissively worth shit he is always on the verge of getting skull fucked. He has good skills but is just weak as fuck. He is not even a marketable name out side or maybe even in st louis let alone a superstar. He is always one punch away from defeat and tries to be somthing he is not. He has world class boxing skills but is not remotly a world class fight. He has nothing but his boxing skills, He has no power no stamina no chin no ability to fight on the inside does not go to the body. He has solid defense. Sorry but spinks is not a good fighter, hes and A level boxer but a c level fighter.

Thank you very much for the reply, champ. Yeah, Rivera's style just isn't my favorite.
I think its great btw that you take time to be in here among all us nobodies. I've seen you all over the various boxing sites out there. If my little boxing show ever takes off, I'll gladly plug the hell out of your book or anything for you.
Peace.

I totally disagree that the fight should've been a draw, that's crazy talk, imo. Yeah Spinks lost the last round, no doubt, but he won AT LEAST 7 rounds, and I could've seen 8 rounds in his favor. Karmazin didn't ever step on the gas when Spinks tired out in the 2nd half and he deserved to lose.
I think you wanted Spinks to not win because of his ring entrance, which you have way too much problems with imo.
You're a former world class fighter yourself. Would you have really let something like a little insignificant ring entrance keep you from winning a fight? I'm not saying it would've helped you, no way, it IS a distraction, but you come off as if you want guys to lose when they have intricate ring entrances. Or at least, it appears that you hold it majorly against them even if you don't want them to lose because of it.
I haven't thought much of Rivera so far, but if you say he's good I guess you know what you're talking about, so we'll see. He just seems a little raw to me.
let's just hope Rivera loses his title off TV to someone that matters. better yet, he vacates it realizing who he is, then Spinks and someone like the Forrest-Quartey winner can fight for it.
