What would You change in Boxing Today to make it more interesting? Is it the calibre of the fighters in the sport today, Is it the rules, state regulations, Is it these mandatory opponents that Title Holder's have to fight or risk losing their belts, or is it these Champs fight for the money instead of the competition??? I believe it may be a combination of them all but how could it be flipped back to the interest level when you heard of fight like Ray Leonard vs Marvin Hagler, or Ali vs anybody? How can boxing get its Hype back???? :boxing:
For me first and foremost make holding a foul that is as serious as headbutting and disqualify someone asap if they hold at any point during the bout. I don't care if it's round 1 and a guy is getting pounded , if he holds once a point will be taken again following the warning bout over by DQ. Holding makes the fight's boring and almost like UFC, we pay to see action not holding and stalling of the action. Second, less belts and make it manditory that champion's face each other reguardless of politic's between promoter's or sanctioning bodie's of boxing. If a champion wants to duck a fighter then he will be stripped of the title at once. If there are guys who want to fight for money only they can do it somewhere else and save us who apprieciate the belt's and traditional style of fighting the trouble of hearing them bitch about money and fight only safe fight's that present them with no challenege. Also , a restriction on retirement, a guy should only get maybe 2 or 3 time's to retire period...I can see one or two comebacks but Jesus we have guys with more retirements than comback wins. Longer fights , in some of these divison's the fighter's are so good and well matched that after 10 or 12 rounds they still seem fresh and in some cases neither fighter has sustained any damage, thus going back to a 15 round fight standard would be nice or maybe just having the fights go until there's either a ko or a clear winner NO DRAWS. Lastly, they should have a league type atmosphere like all the other major sports have with a comissioner and a board that looks after the fighters and matches them up and have a boxing superbowl type event once a year with all the great fight's in one Pay-Per-View that would generate billion's of dollars. IMO
The Thread should have ended with this one. It's simple; but it is all the sport really needs when it's all said and done.
But; if a compromise is necessary, I'd settle for the current multiple divisions with only ONE champion in each one.
Return to the eight traditional weight classes, with only one championship belt in each division.

1.have the judges watch the fight in isolation away from the crowd and on monitors so they all have the same viewing angle of the fight.
2.i agree about the champ defending his belt 2-3 times per year, but he should never fight anyone ranked below the #2 spot.
3.prize fights...all fights should be split 70/30 or 60/40 with the higher % going to the winner of course. if this is a championship fight the champ gets a guaranteed 1 mil for accepting the fight.
4. the weigh in should happen the day of the fight just a few hours before. that way you would have fighters fighting closer to their actual weight.
5. their should be a commissioner/president of boxing something similar to the nfl/nba/mlb/ with universal rules.
I like the 8 weight classes...like Rockin said I like the 1 champ per division even better but has anyone thought about this...
What if in between rounds we had the ring card girls squatting on spears?
Has anyone even thought about this?
Thats a good point. I think 4 times a year is a little much, but at leat 2 to 3 times per year especially the top guys.
I agree, by having champs fight more than once a year, they could get their mandatory out of the way & fight their big money fight in the same year, with the chance to have a rematch in the same year as well. That'd be way better. I Can Dig it!!!! :boxing:
I would up the number of fights by all fighters per year to at least 4 fights/yr...this is for all fighters...fan todayonly get to see their favorite fighter once or twice a year..that shit has and needs to stop....more fights=more fans....

It's such an easy concept but none of the top champions want to subscribe to it. How can you be a fan when you have to wait so long for your favorite fighters to get back into the ring? Its like waiting for your birthday or christmas(or whatever holiday that you celebrate), it only happens once a year!

have 1 no more than 2 championship belts per weightclass. come up with a sound reliable rankings system and purse system, so being the champion is more than just a title.
Good topic.
My suggestion to improve the popularity of some of the current heavyweight fighters today and make the division more interesting to fans would be:
The current champions need to fight more than two times per year. Wlad Klitscho excited everyone by winning the IBF belt in dramatic fashion. But its dissappointing that fans have to wait over seven months to watch him fight again.
Wlad could have easily lined up an opponent for an August bout and then fight again in the late fall or early winter. Thats not asking too much is it? Heavyweight champions like Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes averaged at least 3 championship fights per year. So, why not the current crop of heavyweight champions?
(Although WBC champ Hasim Rahman is en route to fighting three times this year. Lets hope so!)
I was watching the Contender today and got to thinking that it would cool if they did something like that as part of ESPN boxing or something. Take 15 guys or whatever and have a tourne, Winner takes all, $1,000,000 or something.
Return to the eight traditional weight classes, with only one championship belt in each division.
this plus have odd number rounds, that would make for less draws
