I'm Watching Big george on Quite frankly and he made a great point about the HW div. It's not that the Div was better back in the day it's just that we where only able to see the best fights. Whereas now, we get to see all fights, including the weak ones.
well, despite the inactivity i do think the hw's as a whole are pretty awful. with the generous amount of jiggly fat on him, i'd say buster fits right into todays crop and probably would box the ears off of most of the contenders and ABC champs today.
it's funny in a sense because when watching byrd/klit about a month ago someone asked if we could imagine what "say a ron lyle' would do against those two. everyone else agreed that neither one would last 3 rounds with lyle. the really scary thing is, klit may be the best of the bunch. i can visualize a chuvalo or quarry or leotis martin slapping that jab of klits right out of the way and dropping him like a prom dress with a good over hand right.
I really like Ron Lyle, but he's about the same size as Williamson, in fact he might be a little smaller. He'd have to get close to Wlad to hit him, and as big as Wlad is, I don't see him slapping Wlad's jab down all that easily. I think Byrd would have given Lyle a lot of trouble because he moves, and Wlad because of the size and reach. Either of them could be a good fight though because Lyle's chin wasn't granite, that always makes for excitement.
i think when we look at the past we compact the time and era's together, thats why it all seemed so exciting in the past.the heavywieght div has always seemed dull..untill you get an exciting fight every two years..its always the same..we quickly forget the dull periods and just remeber the highlights..
Exactly...

people say this every goddamn decade! when will people learn?
Seems like u the one who needs to learn. Todays HW's are pathetic. How many years since we saw a great HW fight? Or had many GOOD contenders. The PAST still BLASTS. Today is ho hum.
The next dominate HW champ is out there somewhere, and I doubt that anyone even knows his name yet. So don't even try to name anyone.

people are always in love with the past.
a lot of people are also in love with the fighters that they grew up with. that's why many boxing pundits are constantly talking about when they grew up so and so would've done this or that to current fighters.
chuvalo or quaryy lol.
but that is true, the best fighters dont fight eachother enough. It should be simple. We odnt need all these damn titles. The champs need to fight eachother so we can clear it up.
The division isnt as good because of a couple reasons. The first being the fact that they get bigger every decade. The bigger they get, the slower they are and less stamina they will have. These bug guys cant afford to throw a lot of punches or they will ware themselves down physically. The second reason is because like Max said, all the best athletes are playing football and basketball now.
the heavyweight division is only awful because they are inactive and do not fight each other.
this is a good post. very true. promoters are clinging onto thier titleholders to milk them for as much as they can. it's pitiful.
i think we would all like to see the top guys fight eachother and take some risks. wladimir klitschko has already initiated this by taking on samuel peter, offering james toney a fight, and calling out all of the other titleholders who are willing. he is willing to clean house, much like lennox did and like vitali would've had he stayed injury free.
problem is, you can't make a fight with only one guy. this is why i'm calling every beltholder besides klitschko a goddamn pansy. i'm really sick of this contentment to have only one belt. rahman doesn't seem to mind that he's fighting toney again after his mandatory(if he wins). lyakhovich fighting kevin mcbride does not even need to be commented on. who is valuev fighting next, a rematch with larry donald(who actually won the first time!)
here's something that just made me wanna puke - john ruiz is #1 mandatory for valuev's wba belt. wtf!!!!!
the heavys back in the day were better......whats the best matchup of the heavys right now? whatever it is it cant compare to 60s 70s and 80s
don't leave out the 90's Holyfield always had great fights
