Hagler never fought at 168, so that is pretty pointless to talk about. Hagler was not in his prime against Leonard, that was his last fight, still Jones is no Leonard. A prime Hagler would've eaten up Jones for lunch.
If you really read what I said, then you would know what I mean. I said that Roy left 160 at 24 and was not yet in his prime, so he wouldnt have beat Hagler at 160, but when he left 168, he was nearly 28, close to his prime and a monster, so if he went down to 160 for one fight then I think he would win. That was my point.
yeah could go either way, either jones ud or hagler ko, but prime for prime i think jones would eventually get caught, the only way for rjj to win is run the whole nite, hagler had a great chin and would take his bombs to get his in on him
Tough fight to call, really. Hagler was past his best against Hearn, Mugabi, and Leonard....the fights most people remember. Ealy on against Sibson, Antoufermo, Hamsho, & Minter, you get an idea of how good Hagler really was; but none of those opponents could be compared to Jones.
Still, from a style match-up, I'd have to favour Jones. Hagler had trouble early on with Boogaloo Watts and Willie Monroe, both slick technicians; and Hagler, really, was more of a counter-puncher in his prime...not the aggressive "destruction and destroy" guy he became when his reflexes faded. I'm not sure if he could find an answer for the kind of speed Jones presented at middleweight.
From a style match-up, this one's got Jones by decision written all over it.
True, but i think its important to note that this would be Roy after 21 fights, not the Roy after 30 or 34 when he was just great.
A young roy may have had more problems with Hagler, but i agree it would go the distance and it would definitly be close.
Its a shame that people only remember the Roy against Johnson and Tarver.
He was 100 times better than that.

Yeah i think Roy would win the fight if he was in his prime, he wasn't technically sound like Haggler but with his speed and reflexes he didn't have to be, he could just jump in throw hooks before his opponents knew what hit them, he was a horse and because of that i think he would win by UD.
I pick jones. touph fight. 160/168 jones had as much power as hagler. rarely got hit but chin didnt seem bad, great stamina and his speed made up for any defisiancy in tech. hagler struggled w some moving up (leonard and duran). and although the leonard fight was notin haglers prime it was further from leonards (detached retna, moving up, 3 yrs off. Hagler was a workhorse but I just dont think that that jones gets worn down.
lets take this a step further. How does hagler (young/old) do w hopkins?, tarver?
Hops always did what he was supposed to w fighters coming up hagler?
RJJ wins by UD and it's not even close. I was a big fan of Hagler back in the day, and he was a great technician and a true warrior. But the sheer athleticism of RJJ in his prime, his speed and power, are truly special.
Marvin was marvelous, but Roy was a once-in-a-lifetime type of fighter.
Not even forget...Most of these posters weren't even watching boxing during Jones's hayday...
Everyone seems to want to play this nostalgia game that they weren't even around for...
Jones would have won...
LoL i agree i was the same way when i was getting into boxing. I thought NO ONE WOULD HAVE EVER BEAT Marciano lol hell even now i have to remind myself that Ali was not unbeatable...it just takes time for people to understand that no one knows for sure who would win dream fights like this but in this case all evidence in my eyes leads me to think that Roy wins this fight..faster ,bigger, stronger,

Yeah I think your right! Thats been proven many times, for me. I only became a proper boxing fan AFTER I boxed as a school boy in 94. Its like we all give our view on fighters like Ali, and so on but at least we have access to these fights and judge and analyze accordingly! :boxing: :boxing:
ahh.....how soon people forgot how hard RJJ hits at 168. People are forgetting his greatness.

Hagler has never been in trouble. every fighter gets hurt, the knockdown was not a legit knockdown, if Hearns landed the same punch that he did on Hagler, he would've knocked out anyone else. He broke his hand with that punch.
Fact is Leonard was a much better boxer then Jones, fact is Leonard had a way better chin then Jones, fact is that was Haglers last fight & still many people though he won.
Jones would've never survived with Hagler, he would've been knocked out sooner or late.
Jones style was unique, he was too fast and his reflexes were too quick for Hagler to tee of on him.
This is a younger Roy with a better chin who wouldnt get KO'd in 1 shot.
This fight would have gone the distance, and it would have been close.
Clean punching vs Agression.
I actully see it going kind of like Hatton Collazo went.
Altough Roy and Hagler are clearly on another level as far as boxing ability is concerned.
Close decision, probably in favor of Marvin, but it would be close.
For all the morons who say Hagler wins by KO, watch some of Roys fights at 160.
And that wasnt even his best weight!
Hagler would give that boy roy brain damage...Hapler by a killer KO...
Are you going by Jones's last couple of years (when he was shot. EG after the Ruiz fight) or Jones in his prime?
hagler was passed his prime when he fought leanord, haglers advatages vs roy are he is a southpaw that cant be hurt and will keep coming, could he land the ko shot, roy in his prime was something else fast as hell, but he was always more vunerable then thought, because wenow know he can be koed with one shot, i think halgers eventauly gets him because he's a southpaw
We know he can KO'd by one shot by a powerful lightheavy after losing pounds of muscle and at age 36.
We don't know Hagler can KO Roy at all. Roy would be in his prime, not only physically but mentally as well.
i honestly think roy could win this if he stuck and moved the entire fight to stay away from haglers bulling, roy at 160 had some pretty nice pop so i think he would have enough power at least to get haglers attention
roy ud no knockdowns but a clear win
Yes I agree Roy would win if they were both in their prime! he would by no means have it easy. I think it would be closer! SD for Roy ;)
