"EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: MIKE TYSON
By G. Leon
Former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world "Iron" Mike Tyson was surpisingly entusiastis about the sport of boxing when ********** caught up with him yesterday evening. Amongst other things Tyson expresses a serious desire to become a boxing commentator to begin sharing his "vast abyss of boxing knowledge with the world." Does Tyson want to fight again? What's he been up to? Answers to these questions and much more are just a click away. ONLY ON **********! It's GREAT to be a member!"-**********
"According to a media column for the New York Daily News, Mike Tyson will work as a ringside analyst for the international broadcast of the Hasim Rahman-Oleg Maskaev fight on Aug. 12 for a piece of the heavyweight title.
Tyson as a commentator creates some fascinating possibilities. It's safe to assume that executive producers will be watching carefully to see whether he could succeed on a major pay-per-view card. Just his name draws a crowd.
When the mood is right, Tyson is knowledgeable, offbeat and funny. The former heavyweight champ, a Valley resident, couldn't beat Lennox Lewis in the ring. As an analyst, however, Lewis sometimes sounds as if he is talking about his favorite pastime, chess. On the broadcast side of the ropes, it might be Tyson in a knockout."-Tysontalk/azcentral...

Mike might not be as loquacious as I'd like but he's hardly an idiot. And if you really think about it Manny Steward isn't a Rhodes Scholar himself. Everytime he says something you can spot two or three mispronunciations or grammatical errors, but does anyone really care? I know I don't. I still like to hear what he has to say because he adds depth and colour to a fight. He'll compare and contrast to fights and fighters of past generations and that makes the fight more interesting. It makes the fight part of the sport and you realize there's a hell of a history to boxing. That's why he's there.
Lampley and Merchant aren't sages either. Jim's just the play by play man but I like it when he gets excited about fights and starts cutting off everyone else. It's especially funny when he does it to Howard Lederman cause he only gets about two minutes airtime and I'm sure he gets pissed.
I like Merchant for usually calling it like it is but even his fortune cookie wisdom wears thin at times. Sometimes it just makes no sense.
So my point being. The HBO team isn't perfect. Mike Tyson isn't perfect either. So...why not?
maybe mike should use his name to sell ear shaped chocolate bars or steaks, the tython snack
i always thought he could become a trainer
or open mike tyson gyms - even if they were just fitness oriented not so much boxing
edit cause first post was unreadable
hed be great. if anyone knows tyson, u know that he has an incridible knowledge of sport. And im not tyson lover, i respect him but i hardly like him. And stop calling this guy stupid. He's actually kinda smart if u think about it. I mean, he just wansng given an education.
Atlas and Cus both said that he sucked up what they tought him like a sponge. He never forgot anything, and he wouldnt miss a beat. And when he would watch tape, he would learn tons about how to break down fighters, and about the fighters themselves.
I think Tyson would make an excellent commentator. Hes enthusiastic, he loves the sport, and hed give some cool points on what fighters should be doing and what ull see them do.
Tyson has fought through all the situations. He knows what itll take to win by an upset, and he knows how u feel when ur getting beat by the underdog. He has experienced virtually everything there is to experience inside the ring. I would watch the first fight he commentates, even if i dont like the fighters
As long as he keeps away from speculation of being a fighter and a bad ass guy! Then I think he can do this. He can build his confidence back up, then realize he's good at something again ;)
Tyson needs to use his name better, look at Ali and Foreman, both making millions after boxing with their name. Foreman was the luckiest, sold his take in Foreman grills for $375 million.

Tyson could take the role James Toney has had on some BDSSP telecasts on FSN. He wouldn't have to be on-air for the duration of the actual fights immediately. I think Showtime should throw some money at him for namepower's sake since they have a 2-man team on both their America's Fight Night show and Showbox, but I'm sure a lesser network than the "Big 2" would be thrilled to have him on board as long as he's not asking for too much money...
I know PPL would love to watch Mike on the tube so it couldn't hurt with helping bring some energy to the telecast. I saw an interview with Winky and he said he wanted to sign Mike and get him into some boxing thing's. He said you would be fooled Mike has a great boxing mind and would love to work with him in the near future.
I'm not sure he could control himself, ... what with all the ring girls between rounds.
Of course, he may try to eat Larry Merchant's ear, too, during the broadcast. Now, I might buy a ppv to see that. lol
Maybe he should do more advising to Zab Judah. He's done a terrific job there.
tython would get HBO boxing a lot better ratings, even if everybody was only watching to see if iron mike would thay somthing crazy or rip off a piece of larry merchant's ear. larry's drunk anyway, he wouldn't even feel it if tython took a bite out of him

All joking aside, if anything stops him from being part of the HBO crew it'll be Merchant. Larry doesn't like Tyson at all. He's subtly made that very clear over the past several years.

I wouldn't mind hearing Tyson talk during a fight, might be pretty cool. If anything HBO might have him do guest appearences every once in a while which would be good.
He'd be perfect, I think. They should definitely give him a shot and see how it goes. He's more knowledgable about boxing history than probably anyone on the HBO staff other than Lederman, and he might know more than even Harold. He's sat in on a round or two here and there in the past, and I always thought he was very good.
He may do a decent job but he does not have the voice for it.
THOSE WERE MY THOUGHTS AS WELL, I THINK HE KNOWS THE SPORT JUST WOULDNT BE A VERY GOOD COMMENTATOR.
