The ability to go toe-to-toe.....is a real & true ability.
Ricardo Mayorga's two horrible beatings at the hands of Felix Trinidad & Oscar DeLaHoya prove this.
Mayorga is a strong, powerful wildman. Yet, when it came time to exchange with those two elites, he was completely obliterated by them.
Both of them showed that going toe-to-toe well, is more than just ferocity & raw power. Unlike Mayorga, both Oscar & Felix still maintain their defense while trading heavily, & beat lesser foes with well-conceived & well-placed punches/combos.
This ability comes from years of training, learning, & fighting.
A fake "purist" only sees boxing skill when a fighter seems to focus on hitting & not getting hit....while not looking to do the most damage.
The reason the average Joe would be hospitalized by a decent boxer won't be because the boxer would pick him apart, but because when the Joe stands & trades with the real boxer, he's entering a place in which he is completely outgunned.
Being safe while infighting is hard enough. Being safe while infighting and at the same time beat the other guy up?
Damn, that's what legendes like Duran, Chavez, Tyson, LaMotta etc are made of!

Great post.
I thought Floyd standing toe-to-toe with N'Dou, and using his reflexes and speed to make sure he was dishing out plenty but recieving nothing was a great display of toe-to-toe boxing. He stood in the pocket all night and picked him to pieces.
You've been making really good threads lately buster.
I agree....keep it up jabs.
the fight to watch for a perfect example of toe to toe art is 1984 Chavez vs Martinez.
Watch some old tapes of J.C. Chavez if you think that "brawling" is lessed skilled as boxing. Anyone can come in and wing, but when you watch a fighter like Chavez, his eyes wide open while he's getting hit, looking for openings..doubling the left hook..it's like an artist painting a picture. The truley great ones don't just come in and wing, they use tact and strategy that is every bit as impressive as anyone who "boxes".
Beautiful, accurate post.

taking shots and brawling is just as athletic as the dancing around style of boxing
different sports are just as athletic but require different athletic skills
the same is true of different fighting styles
also...it depends on what your strengths and weaknesses and instincts are as to which style you find harder
I didn't accuse you of anything. I agree that it isn't easy to fight inside, but it's even harder to learn how to box.
Depends on what you think is boxing.
You think it's harder for a tall, lanky guy to keep a foe out at the end of his jab.....than it is for a smaller guy to get up in a foe's wheelhouse, avoiding/getting through the incoming, & work well ? I say, "no way" to that.

The fear of getting punched in the face is a great motivator. That's the only reason why I can see grown men running away from another grown man in the ring.

The problem with taking some to land some is that it's nothing to be respected. Not everyone is blessed with a good chin, so you should really admire the guys that hit and not get hit because THEY are athletes. Guys that go in and brawl like wild are not athletes in the same sense that the boxers are. I mean how hard is it to go in and throw haymakers like an idiot when you have a good chin? You can't tell me, for instance, that the Mayorga's, Castillo's and Corrales' are as good of athletes as the Mayweather's, De La Hoya's, etc. That's just ridiculous.QUOTE]
Please find who it is who is telling you that, son.
It ain't me.
All I'm saying with this post is.....Boxing is not all about lots of movement, jabs, & racking up points.
Standing with your foe, & getting inside of his attack with your more sophisticated stuff- doing damage....is boxing, also.

Oh and just to add another idea.
Real fighters like Arce, Castillo, Corrales etc have a method to throwing as many clubbing punches.
Hypothetically
If you concealed a red button on the other side of a clay shell exterior, they would attack with rapid punches trying to dig and hit the button with a hard shot once it's exposed.
That's contradictory to alot of purists who would rather take a step back and only swing at an area they think the button is concealed in, and only swing when they have the opportunity.

I misread you, I though you were down grading purist who appreciated the boxing instead of toe-to-toe.
The most memorable and skillfull toe-to-toe action that I ever saw has to be Corrales vs Castillo, it was brutal it was beautiful it was the best fight I ever saw.
It was the best fight I ever saw as well, but neither of them fought a good fight in that one. When you take that many punches, you are definitely doing something wrong. But, hey, it's great to watch. It's just we're not watching two great boxers by any stretch of the imagination, just two amazing warriors.

good points, but they both beat Mayorga because he needs alot of room to throw those haymakers, you get up in closes he has to throw shorter punches that aren't as effective. If Oscar would have been dancing around, Mayorga would have had enough space to hit him with a real hard punch. IMHO i'll go for the boxer over the brawler 9/10(if the boxer has a strong chin) except in HW, there it's a different ballgame.
I agree...the HW division is probably the exception. I think Mayorga wings his punches too much, so a good boxer can get that punch-not-seen in between one of those haymakers, like Oscar did.
