i would rate him a 5 out of 10 in pure boxing ability, but the man has sheer size on his side most opponents (all) opponents are smaller than him so if he works behind his massive jab he will be hard to get to, but if he didn't have size he would be a mid journeymen at best
...Very good analysis and pretty much what I think. Unless they hide and protect him then his reign will be short.
So far, he is solid. not greatly impressive tho. he has beaten a few C class fighters in Larry Donald and Clifford Etienne and one B class guy in John Ruiz. He needs to take on some better comp real soon before we forget about him.
I'd love to see Valuev vs. Wlad this year
U think bIG foot would want any part off Wlad? :D
Wlad has got the size and power to destroy Big foot the only real boxer out their able to do this i believe due to big foots pure size and weight,The way he was leaning on Ruiz must have tired Ruiz outt soo much he was fuckd,
bIG foot only likes fighting bums if he had the choice he would never take on a boxer like Wlad,
I dont think most people realise how difficult it will truly be to beat Valuev.
This is exactly my point. With the current crop of heavyweights, no one is as vulnerable as people say. I learned after picking Kirk Johnson, Andrew Golata, Fres Oquendo, and Rahman to beat Ruiz that you can't say that they are gonna get blown out easy. None of the current heavyweights eminate an aura of greatness like they did in yesteryear. While most of these heavyweights would be gone in a round and a half when there was one champion and his name was either Louis or Ali, guys like Klitschko and Brewster hardly ilicit the kind of worthiness and dominance that the aforementioned greats harbor. (Damn that was a long sentence, let me take a breath, OK I'm ready). So Valuev may wind up successfully defending his title a few times before relinquishing the title to another contender in a year or 2.
Deja vu?
not to sound biased or anything, but wlad would be way too much for the big man. regardless of how easy wladimir thinks the fight'll be, i hope we get to see it in a unification bout, with the easy win for klitschko.
Its not bias, its damn near fact.

I've only seen the Ruiz fight, so I can't really be a good judge of his ability, but he did well in that fight and made that jab work

good question
It's really hard to say how good Valuev is since he's so much bigger than other world class heavyweights, and nobody's beaten him yet (officially anyway). Unless you think that John Ruiz and Larry Donald each have a style that gives Valuev trouble, Valuev's inability to dominate those 2 guys suggests that he's far from being a great fighter. Larry Donald was somewhat better several years ago than he is today, and he was dominated in convincing fashion by :
Riddick Bowe (1994)
Kirk Johnson (2001) (closer than the Bowe fight)
Vitaly Klitschko (2002) (Donald's only loss by ko or tko)
Hence there's reason to believe that a prime Riddick Bowe was much better than Valuev, and Vitaly Klitschko was better too.
John Ruiz's jab and clinch style is trouble for many heavyweights but he got clearly outpointed by Roy Jones and a fat, flabby James Toney, so Ruiz is nowhere close to being a great fighter even if you tolerate all his clinching.
Hence my take on Valuev is that he's very lucky to still be undefeated, and won't remain that way for much longer unless his manager ducks the best heavyweights around, such as Wladimir Klitschko, Liakhovich, Brock, Sam Peter and Rahman.
valuev vs. beck
these are the matchups that we live for.
"You dream of fights like these, but very seldom do they live up to the expectation."
Hey MechSlave, hows that for Emanuel Steward quotes? :D
Wladimir Klitschko pretty much said that he wouldn't even fight him because he's a joke and I would agree with that assessment.
Yeah and that makes sense man.
That's the equivalent of Butterbean sending a public message to Mike Tyson....saying he'd beat him in a 4 round fight.
Saying exactly: "mike's too stupid to fight me"
If you remember that.
Yeah mother fucking right and a half.

It's been proven in the past, the only way to beat Byrd is to let your hands go. There is no other way.
I've never seen Valuev piece together accurate combinations on his opponents and set up power shots.
Valuev's jab is actually not THAT bad, he'd be jabbing Byrd all night long and could UD. Valuev has slim to none chance to KO/TKO Byrd.
He might UD Byrd by sheer size advantage, he might have a chance against Rahman, WK and Peter will KO him within 8 rounds.
