"I hope Jermain Taylor wins, because it will be good for boxing.....".
Don't get me wrong Taylor fans. Its just that I always see this phrase everytime I check out threads that has anything to do with Taylor... the question here is why? How?
I already saw this in his fight with Joppy... then in his (2)fights with Bernard Hopkins. Now in his upcoming fight Winky Wright. I mean , come on, with the exception of his fight with Joppy, he is showing tentative, passive and sometimes , boring performances specifically his fights with Hopkins. If he is going to show up in the Wright fight with yet again another mediocre performance, how will it be good for boxing?? How will boxing , in general benefit from a linear middleweight champion who is satisfied with 2 or maybe 3 points win over his much older opponent?
I do hope that, should he wins over winky, he wins it BIG, otherwise not win at all. In short, Winky winnning over Taylor is better for boxing than Taylor winning lacklusterly over him  .
Yeah, it has been so good for Taylor after beating bernard hopkins twice. Both of the decisions are disputed (not "robberies," but disputed), and the guy has been getting shit since then. It might be good for boxing if he really outpoints wink and looks like the superior fighter, but to give him a decision in a close fight would not be good for boxing necessarily.
Because Winky is the most boring fighter on the face of the planet. Yes, he's talented, yes he wins, BUT GOD DAMN IS THAT MAN BORING. Winky's style is just flat out bad for boxing.
Taylor can be a pretty exciting fighter when matched up right.I mean cmon,he was fighting Bernard Hopkins! Not the easiest fighter to figure out,and pull into an exciting fight. And the Joppy fight wasn't his fault.Joppy gave up after the first two rounds and stopped throwing punches. He was satisfied to just survive.Jermain definetly still has a lot to prove. But im not judging him yet on two fights with an all time great defensive master.
Taylor is a class act, a young guy, and is pretty exciting, as you would have seen from some of his other fights. He has the potential to make the middleweight division popuar again. Wright is just a boring fighter and provides little to no excitement. Plus, hes old.
Taylor is not articulate at all. he stutters something awful. he is talented but to be honest not a great in the making. to be honest if he wins vs Wright, its time for him to move up. I like Taylor, but him winning doesnt all of the sudden make boxing popular again.
I disagree strongly that Taylor is good for boxing

I'll go a step further. Until Jermain Taylor shows an ability to fight inside instead of just holding I think his success is bad for boxing, because it gives fans and other boxers the notion that if you have enough basic athletic ability you don't have to be a complete fighter.
I'm probably a rare exception to the general rule, but I root for boxers based primarily on their style, whether they're a credit to the fine art of boxing, whether they have all the skills and whether they show courage and heart, etc. I nearly always root against guys that clearly avoid infighting, which is to my way of thinking the style of the ultimate warrior in boxing. It's 1 thing to skillfully box on the outside and something totally different to also hold repeatedly on the inside. Take a good look at the way De La Hoya fought against Mayorga. He boxed on the outside but didn't clinch once when Mayorga moved inside on him. That style is in the great tradition of all the boxers who I admire such as Mike McCallum, Joe Louis and Alexis Arguello. Jermain Taylor isn't even close to that yet. He still has time to learn but honestly I'm not optimistic.
Winky may be the bigger name, but Taylor is the Middleweight champ and his popularity is rising and it will go up even more if he beat winky.
Actually at this point, Winky is probably only bigger to big fans of boxing, I know a lot of people who dont really follow boxing that know of Taylor than Wright. Its because Taylor likes to been seen. He is a very talkative guy and loves to go to public events, making him very sociable and marketable. Winky doesn't really (as far as I know) open himself up to the public as much. I think I heard a quote once that, Taylor could probably win the spot as gov of Arkansas right now. Hes a very positive influence on the sport, and if he beats on Wright his name will soar, and looking at it... Dela Hoya (Probably won't fight Taylor OR Wright more then likly his next fight is his last, Vargas fighting say Taylor, Taylor would get trashed for even thinking about this fight id think ,Margarito would have to go up 2 divisions to take on the bigger stronger guy when really thats what he relys on at his weight that he is that guy, Calzaghe vs Taylor would be a better fight than vs Wright in fact Id like to see him fight Taylor, Strum in my opinion was scared and priced himself out of a fight with Taylor and I think Taylor would win anyhow and that being said Wright would take care of him handily as well,Lacy and Taylor are friends arent they? prob wouldn't occur and after Lacys lost to Joe I think Taylor could do the same =/, or maybe Pretty Boy Ill say this now and almost everyone will agree with me, PBF wants NOTHING to do with wright / taylor he might fight wright if he makes 30+ mil off it which will NEVER happen dont even include him in the talks, really what I did was take the fights you mentioned for wright an put em in taylors aspect, win or lose wright can fight vargas it doesn't matter, but really if Taylor wins Id love to see him fight someone like Calzaghe or Abrahm =/

I agree with you PBF, in totality, with what you said...I guess Wright himself is sometimes boring.Yet the fact is, Winky is the bigger name out of the two and should Winky wins, a lot more promising match-ups will come our way. Dela Hoya, Vargas ,Margarito, Calzaghe, Strum,Vargas, maybe Lacy, or maybe Pretty Boy... Imagine that, No. 1 versus No. 2 pound for pound fighters clash together for the ultimate fight. My point is, im willing to sacrifice 10 exciting years of championship boxing with Taylor who is good but sometimes passive champion, rather than the 2 good years of championship reign Wright could have, where he will engage in fights that we fight fans could only dream of....

Plus, hes old.Yes, i agree with PBF34, Jermain does have great personality outside the ring: he's a good ambassador for the sport. If only he gets up to give sterling rounds inside the ring from hereon, then, he surely can be forgiven by fight fanatics for recent shortcomings and attract so much more attention for the sport from the mainstream. Among the current champs, Taylor is one of the very few who have been invited to grace non-sports (talk) shows, accepted the invitation and held his own. I saw him recently on an early morning gig on FOX.
And yes, the watch on his wrist as he gesticulated during the show...! :)
Well, it has to do more with marketability than overall skill. In the next few years, more kids will be trying to be like Taylor than Wright. Taylor is a fresh faced young undefeated champion with a wealth of charisma. Winky isn't that type of personality. I think thats where your friend is coming from.
Winky winnning over Taylor is better for boxing than Taylor winning lacklusterly over him
I agree that taylor needs to win convincingly for it to be good for boxing, but the same,or more so,goes for Wright. In fact most of the criticisms you have for Taylor could more fittingly be said about Wright.I dont know how long youve been watching Taylor, but you act like he never gets KOs or like Hopkins was a pushover he took it easy on.
