Canadian boxing icon George Chuvalo was presented with an honourary WBC Heavyweight Championship belt on Tuesday night in Toronto.
Arguably the best Canadian boxer ever, Chuvalo held the Canadian Heavyweight Championship title for an unprecedented 21 years from 1958 to 1979. Chuvalo also traded blows with some of the greatest fighters of his era, including Muhammed Ali, George Foreman and Joe Frazier. In 97 professional bouts, Chuvalo was never knocked down.
While Chuvalo is widely known for his successful career as a professional boxer, the time and effort he has committed to his charity, Fight Against Drugs, is a great personal triumph. Having lost three sons to drugs and his wife to suicide, Chuvalo founded the charity in 1996 and, over the years, has reached out to more than 100,000 youths from every walk of life.
Look, moron. During Roy Jone's LHW stint, Roy could of easily finished off his opponents. Fact is, he would rather be 'safe' and win a decision on the cards so he wouldn't have to take any punches. Johnson was the same way.
no, johnson liked to carry the fight to inflict more punishment on white boxers. he didn't do it to as you put it, "play it safe".
why not? cause you believe them stories that them old fogies tell you about how corbett was such a dancing master and he could outbox anybody? back then fighters used to throw one punch at a time. corbett only looked good fighting against slow mummies like sullivan who only threw one punch every minute. do you think he would look as impressive fighting jack johnson, who threw flurries of combinations? i'll answer that one for you, NO!! so like i said again, corbett loses in three rounds or less to johnson, prime or not.
Your very much misinformed about that era, Butterfly, because fighters DID NOT throw ONLY "one punch at a time" or "one punch every minute", and what video there is of Corbett (I've seen him vs. Fitz and also that footage of him & Courtney) clearly shows that he throws punches in combination or flurries...as is the case with any other fight that you will see from that era of the late 1890's/early 1900's.
Even the contemporary fight reports from that time describe combination punching, and although not as prevailant as today, that part of boxing WAS around in abundance during that time.
P.S. Do a search for the punchstats I posted recently from the McAuliffe/Griffo ten round fight from that era and tell me how those two fighters reportedly landing a combined total of 260 punches (according to the referee's counting of them via a clicker) over 30 minutes somehow equates to "one punch every minute"...And that's only the punches landed in a fight that was described as being not nearly as action packed as many of the other fights from that time.
what an idiot. Johnson would not exert himself because he never felt the need to. He was exactly like a LHW Roy Jones Jr.
before you start calling people idiots, you sshould think first. did i say johnson would exert himself? most likely once johnson hit corbett with some good shots, he would be hurt and it would be easy for johnson would finish him off.
johnson never extended himself. He was alot like Roy Jones at LHW. HE wouldn't knock out corbett in 3 rounds, kiddie.

Nope, nothing but "wishful thinking" on Butterfly's part would indicate that a fight between Johnson & Corbett (at their respective bests) would end nearly that quickly...
Johnson would very likely win, but odds are that fight goes very deep into the night, and if scheduled for 15 rounds, odds are quite good that it would go that full distance.
Well Corbett & Johnson had a lengthy history of disliking, even hating on each other before the fight, and there was more than a few public challenges made by both fighters (especially from Corbett!) to engage in a boxing match in the few years leading up to the Johnson/Jeffries matchup...Going by the contemporary writings/quotes of the time, neither of them were particularily "kind" with what they were saying to each other and neither hid the fact that they disliked each other tremendously.
But yeah, Corbett seemed to have had even more dislike more Johnson than vice versa, considering what he was saying in public print, how badly he wanted to get him in the ring even at his advanced age, and the fact that he was constantly offering his training services to any heavyweight willing to fight Johnson for the title, especially after the Johnson/Jeffries fight.
Oh well...different times, though.
jack johnson would have knocked out a prime corbett in about 3 or 4 rounds.

yeah, and also that bigoted piece of shit corbett was one of james jeffries cornermen in the johnson-jeffries fight, and during the fight, corbett was yelling racial slurs at johnson. and everytime corbett said something nasty, johnson would retaliate by hitting jeffries, lol! and then johnson would lightly threaten corbett saying, "you want some of this? i'll take you on next if you want", lol! he should have. after he licked jeffries, he should have went up to corbett and beat the shit out of him, lol! :D

I don't think he was nearly as big of racist as some of the other fighters during that time (particularily Sullivan), but I REALLY wished he hadn't given Peter Jackson such a run around when the deserving Jackson challenged him for the title.
And yeah, Corbett wasn't exactly a "gentleman" in the ring either...especially if you were to read about the fight with Fitzsimmons when Corbett reportedly spat directly in Fitz' face during a couple of clinches, attacked Fitz after the fight was over during the post fight celebration, and then soon after threatening to attack Fitz in the street if he ever saw him out and about.

Gentelman Jim Corbett? Maybe I was reading into his nickname too much. At any rate, my point still stands.

oh yeah, and georeg chuvalo was a good fighter. not a great fighter, but a good one. he could take a punch better than anyone who ever fought. he's a kind of person that would be an inspiration to alot of people on how to overcome life's struggles. :)

yeah, he may have been called "gentleman" jim, but he definetely was not nice.
That's a beautiful post Kid. I think it's time to recognize some of these boxers as human beings outside the rings. Patterson, Chuvalo, Corbett etc. All GREAT people, which is even more important then what they accomplished inside the ring.
corbett? now i know you got problems. that cunt was one of the biggest racists in boxing history! first you compared bush to hitler, and now this. what in the world is wrong with you?
Chuvalo has had a rough life, rougher than most of us can even imagine. As well as his granite chin stood up to the many devastating punchers he encountered in his boxing career, his heart and decency withstood the most trying of times outside of the ropes. Chuvalo is an all time great human being.
...Wow, I didn't know all that fucked up shit happened in his personal life. That really sucks. I wonder if his wife killed herself because she lost her boys?
Yes. I think she commited suicide by overdosing on pills, wasn't able to handle the loss of her children.
Foreman was throwing mega bombs and Chuvalo just stood there.
You're exactly right. Think about that. A prime Big George was wailin' away at will and old Chuvalo was being pushed around abit, but he wasn't showing any signs of going down.
