Has there ever been a more dramatic ending to a fight? A better round than round 10 in that fight? A better fight overall?
I was hesitant to call it the greatest fight of all time, but the more I watch it (I still have it on TiVo), the more I'm pretty sure it is.
again 2 pounds
at the time of the weigh in
137 castillo
135 corrales
later
138.5 castillo
??? corrales
Corrales did not have to weigh in, and rightfully so. BUT it does not make sense to compare the weight of castillo taken at a different time then when taken with corrales. Given Corrales was 149 by fight night, he was surely more than 135 when Castillo weighted in 138.5.
would you say corrales was overweight? no
would you say corrales did not weigh in? no
then don't say castillo weighed in at 138.5
Actually they stopped weighting him once they got upto 137lbs because it was obvious he didn't make weight. He went to lose weight and then they weighted him to see what his real weight was because no matter what it was gonna have to be is "official" weight if they fight went on. When they did this he was weight in at 138.5lbs.
What the hell do you think that they actually weighted him at 137lbs on the nose and he went to go eat ? No they stopped weighting him. Check out articles written the night before the fight and not articles summarizing the whole thing. Those articles get into more detail about the weight in.
Agreed! debate closed. ( incidently, i pick Corrales on points in fight 3 ).
hahahahaha I pick castillo by tko (errr, minus an extremely long count, that is!) :D
I have to agree with wmute, this topic has been beaten to death, and neither side is going to agree with the other. I agree with you too...I think just about anybody would say that had chico won, the wt. wouldnt be an issue at all. I've debated this probably more than any other topic in the past 2 yr's, and still think that being a lb. or two over the limit is NORMAL, but what diego pulled, well, that was a new one to me. The blantant spitting/pulling of the mouthpiece, and the outrageous amount of recovery time it gained him....not to mention how it affected the end of the fight...beats the hell out of coming in over a lb.

Look at James Toney, 21 pounds above weight for Roy Jones...but Jones didn`t complain! Why? Because it served Roy an advantage and he was able to beat on a drained fighter. Had Corrales won this issue would have never been mentioned. Dare i say the words....excuses....sour grapes....and my favorite when going to a boxing rules meeting....PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES!

Exactly! It's not like he didnt know ahead of time castillo didnt make wt...but, considering how little he was over the limit, he must have thought it wasnt going to matter. And he weighed more than Castillo come fight time too....all those things considered, the weight argument is weak at best. How many fighters come in over the limit?? Its a regular occurance.

I sense another of those long threads on the issue is starting, and I dont see some of the usual posters you see on those threads.
I officially stop adding anything to mouthpiece/weight issue in this thread.
whatever argument I will read on the subject, I will pretend not to.
Absolutely. Thats why we have the damn 10 ct. to begin with. If the fighter cant 'toe the line' by the count of 10..fights over. Thats the way it's supposed to be.
amen,
now go and explain it if you can
I agree, but for diferent reasons. Chico agreed to go ahead with the fight knowing Castillo was over weight. For me, thats case closed, argument over. No cheating occurred!

The ref! Its his choice to either deduct points, disqualify etc...
in fact he deducted points, which is quite different from "excused"
it is obviously the case that also not making weight is "excused, when it is not abused" otherwise castillo could not have fought, would have been stripped of his license, and so on...
Hah, this is why I love this argument. The argument from both sides is virtualy meaningless. Corrales fans know he cheated, yet excuse it because technically he did get punished for it. Castillo fans know what Corrales did is wrong but doesn't always nescesarily warrant a DQ of sorts.
The castillo weight argument is just fucking stupid, however.

To play devil's advocate:
Isn't gaining more time while clearly hurt gaining an unfair advantage?

Yes, but its a tactic in boxing that is excused if not abused.
corrales tried to buy more time to keep fighting, castillo tried to get an unfair advantage.
