Im 15 years old (almost 16), very out of shape at 5'9 190 lbs, and I just became a big fan of this sport. I cant get enough, but I wonder, is it to late for me to start? By the time I get in shape will the competition be out of my league? You are the real boxers here, please give me your opinions. Ive been out of competitive sports for a whole year and its killing me, Lacrosse is also very close on my list. Convince me, if its not to late, why this would be a great sport for me.
Thanks any help is greatly appreciated,
Dave (soon to be Indianapolis, Indiana resident)
Thanks a lot for the support guys!
I think I will just google training tips for now untill Im the size I want to be. From there, when I move, I could look for a gym to practice and hopefully start boxing.
15 is a great time to start. Starting any earlier may actually be bad for your brain development some say. It can't be good to be six years old and sparring, even against other six year olds. Aside from that, I don't think I need to explain how bad it is for you to be cutting weight to make a division at that age.
Boxing does not take very long to pick up. Starting at fifteen is as good a time as any. I believe the great Joe Louis was fifteen when he started. Tyson was 14, not far behind. Shane Mosley was, I think, 16 or 17.
Realistically, you're either going to be a great fighter or you aren't. Marciano had his first amateur match when he was 22 years old. I believe Ray Mercer was even older.
Fifteen is actually the ideal time to start in my opinion. I wouldn't suggest having kids fight competitively any earlier (training at the gym and not fighting amateur is a different matter entirely). This is my opinion, and a lot of people would disagree, but I would never let my kid get hit in the head repeatedly while his brain is not even fully developed yet.
oww this is a hard one yano, i started boxing when i was 6 like and at a early age u pick up stuff alot more easy than u do at a older age i believe anyway, but if urr 15 and the skills their and u got Heart damm who knows theirs always a change if just depends on how RELE MUCH U WANT IT!, if u ant giving 120% every day u ant got a chance!

At 15, it's not too late; but you'll have to work harder to catch up to those who began before you. The only way to know if this is something you want to do is to try. Find a gym, accept that you're going to be given a hard time, and if you want it....you'll show 'em.
Good luck.
when you start doesn't matter too much...especially at ages younger than 25-28...it is more about how your career is handled and what you look to accomplish (legacy? money? just to lose weight?)
Cotto began to lose weight, now he is making money and looking to create a legacy
Sorry man, have no idea what you are talking about.
I just searched google.com for boxing forums, and this seemed to be the most active I found.
Have an IP scan if you want, I am definatly not the guy you are thinking of.
