Why is holding and punching considered inside fighting to you guys?
Also, old ass thread.
I like to make that distinction as well, I like to separate fighting in the clinches and infighting, I think this doesn't get emphasized enough but the fact of the matter is it's still in fighting. Ward is great defensively in close, but he doesn't have a great two handed attack as he is more of tying one arm up and attacking with the other, Ward is also more of a single punch kind of infighter. I would still classify Ward as a very good inside fighter, currently top 2 in my opinion.
So true, not one expletive dropped. I mean when the first guy said cotto moved the same way tyson did I woulda lost it big time lol.
Anyway Mayweather, Ward in a league of their own Broner follows soon. Believe it or not though I'd actually say Timmy Bradley is up their too. Sure he got creamed over and over again on the inside by Ruslan but I think thats still mostly because he wanted to trade and prove he can punch hard on the inside. If he plays it smart on the inside though, he is lethal.
Very good post, agree man. Bradley didn't pick his spots because he clearly didn't respect Provodnikov, had he shown him respect he would have fought him similar to how he fought Peterson, sadly I get the feeling Bradley got too much taken out of him that night.
As for the thread, at this point in time I'm gonna say Mayweather followed by Ward. If Hopkins was still in his prime I'd take Bernard over both Mayweather and Ward.
rios and mathysse
and lamont petersen is better inside fighter than floyd imo...floyd's got good defense on the inside ( as anywhere) but he's pretty much a one handed fighter on the inside with other hand constantly on the defense..

Its almost like you are allowed to have opinions on a fighter without being labelled a 'fanboy' or a 'hater'. Whoulda thunk?
Mayweather and Ward are on top right now imo.
Coming up though I like Mares and Broner as well. Both different styles of inside fighting but both very effective.
Also does anyone notice how calm, civil and logical the discussion was back in the day?

Okay so I was looking at the very first page of the thread yer and was thinking wtf these idiot are on about? cotto, jlc, hatton best fighters on the inside today? 2 of them are retired and the other a boxer/puncher...thats of course before i realised them posts were from 2006 lol.

It's not. People don't know boxing.
Provodnikov fought well on the inside.... Saul Alvarez is good too.
Does anyone else think Ward is really good on the inside? I think hes really effective on the inside and physically very strong. He muscled Froch to the ropes numerous times and did good inside work. Forchs face told a story in the fourth i think when he was looking at the ref with the "WTF" experssion.
Yes. In fact I would say he looks exceptional on the inside at times. Just completely out-thinking guys in a way that makes it look like he came down from a higher league.

Floyd is the best by a good amount. Ward is next. Right off the top of my head it then goes Peterson. Rios is great but its all Offense. He gets hit alot himself so I cant put him on the Floyd-Ward level who are great on the inside without taking punishment.
mayweather...
haha just kidding but he owns em all
No seriously.
He's a hell of an inside fighter that one. He can use the shoulder roll, and lands serious uppercutts on the inside.
I'd say Floyd is so much more of a complete fighter than anyone else in boxing, and You're right. He owns everyone.
He's by no means as good on the inside in comparison to JLC however.

I'll tell you this much man.
I like Hatton despite how I critiscise him. He's definitely an excellent fighter and there is no disputing that. However, I'd like to see more of him in the States against the kind of opposition that people don't take lightly.
He's making positive steps, and has already openly stated he'd like to fight in the States more often.
If he were to lets say.....look impressive by dismantling a Margarito for instance...I'd have to say the prospect fight between JLC and Hatton becomes much more interesting and a clear winner really could not be picked.
Case and Point example:
I was highly critical of Calzaghe....he dismantled Lacy. I have absolutely no more questions about Joe and he answered them in my book. He's a legitimate top 10 P4P fighter and will dominate the light heavyweight division.
Good post, good rep. I had to eat some serious crow after Calzaghe beat Lacy too.
