Before i get into my question i will say that i am a Roy Jones jr Fan.
I got into a arguments with someone from Pensacola
( Roy jones Jr's hometown ) about whether he was a good boxer in the Technical sense . I said that Roy jones Jr, was a good fighter who relied heavily on athletic abilities , rather then his technical boxing skills . I told the guy in that sense ROY jones jr. was not a good boxer. When i think of Boxers i think of Ali,B-hop,James Toney , Etc. Boxers who fight orthodox and rely on basic boxing skills .
I believe if RJ JR , stopped relying on his atheltic ability as much when he got older and started relying more on his technical skills he wouldnt have fizzeled out like he did in the end of his career . There are guys older then him who are technically sound who can still gut out wins because they have that foundation .
To make a long story short the guy thought that i was hating on Roy and that i was wrong for saying he wasnt a great boxer .
Does anyone agree with my opinion ?
WHO says he didnt have good technical skills? Who says he didn't have "classic skills"? Who is to say what these things even are? Roy used A LOT of technique in the ring and he made it look GOOD, too.
when someone lands every other punch precise and on the other guys jaw, i call that technique. roy jones had that.
You're right on - his "style" was completely built on his athleticism - his hands low let him launch power hooks from anywhere, but it relied on him being able to move to get out of harms way, instead of blocking with a guard. And it worked fantastically - for a while.

Keyword . " For a while " HE could have continued to have success as a older boxer id he would have eveolved into a more technical boxer . thats all i was trying to say .
In the end what built his career was the very same things that made him lose the way he did in his last few fights .
Put it this way... if I have reflexes and unorthodox skills as you call them... and another guy has AWESOME technical skills etc.. then we fight and I totally demolish him... what do his technical skills prove? Do people think Ali and RJ did things just off of reflex and not by design?
You are missing the point . My first sentence I said Roy jones was great . What people arent understanding is in the END of his career, he couldnt fight that way anymore (Unorthodox), He was still relying on those skills he had as a younger fighter and I think they werent there anymore . I think he could have continued to win as he got older if he used technical skill more then how he had been fighting in the past .

of course they did things of design, roy developed his own boxing style with the athletic gifts he was given. it worked damn well, too

i said roy doesnt have the classic boxing skills that say, james toney does. he was a very unorthodox fighter but still had amazing boxing skills

BTW, I wouldn't consider Ali a great boxer in the sense of great technical skills either. He was more sound fundamentally than RJJ, but still had plenty of flaws that he relied on his chin and athleticism to cover.

You're not looking to start an argument in this thread, are you ;)
I was just wanted some other peoples opinions because these guys were trying to talk to me like i didnt know what i was talking about .
easily beating terrible opposition for five years while reigning as the number-two light-heavyweight in the world. .

Yeah i mean i like Roy jones but i wasjust trying to Explain to this guy that he is not a Technically sound boxer . He fights with his hands down , and relies heavily on his natural abilities. He is a very good fighterin my opinion but as he got old he should have evolved into a better boxer instead of relying on those same techniques that he implied when he was 28.
James toney is a good example . He is never in shape but he still stands a chance in a fight because of his technical skills .
