Hi,
I am a sophmore in High School. I am 16 years old, and I am interested in starting boxing. So what exactly do I need to do? Any specific type of lessons to take or anything? If anybody knows anything or like resources on the Web it would be greatly appreciated. Is there like a beginner class? Also, would boxing help me defend myself in real life situations?
Thanks

Oh man I want to box so bad now :boxing: it sounds like fun.
The hardest part is finding a gym though..
How far do you guys have to drive to get to a gym? And how often do you go a week? I want to get in shape more than ever, be able to defend myself, and also box for the fun of it and sport and see if I like it. I think there is a gym in another city, and there is also a kickboxing one. I don't know about kickboxing though
Hey good luck man, i dont think ur gonna be having much FUN when u start sparring. :D
If u want to get into the best shape ever go 5 to 6 times a week.
Who cares how far u have to drive, if u really wanna do it , you will travel the distance.

90% of boxing is being in shape. if you find a real gym. (Not one of these softy let us wear 10,000 pounds of equipment gyms and everyone hold your punches and after 1 round of sparring we stop and watch movies and build a campfire gyms) then you will be fine. Will it help you in the streets hell yes... As a student of the game I can definitely tell you that one of the strenghts of boxing is that you train your body physically to punch and to absorb punishment. You will also learn to throw punches properly in order to maximize your power etc. If you have ever studied any fighting arts you will know that guys on the street do not know how to punch (Wide looping haymakers, worse than Samuel Peter, no defense, and horrible stances and footwork) (Once you box for a few months you will easily exploit such things and make short work of many guys in the streets) and do not train to fight therefore after a minute or so they are winded. I was able to ddispatch a couple of guys twice my size because no matter how strong they may have been, after a minute or two they were winded and trust me after hitting the heavy bag for xx amount of time and sparring for 10 4 minute rounds or whatever your trainers may decide, trust me you will be more than ready to handle most people in the street. (Assuming you are not outnumbered 12 to 1 or someone has a pipe or something.) find yourself a real gym.. one that doesnt have Air conditioning and cool aid after your training sessions. One of the back alley ones that has no ac, is under a soup kitchen and brings about the toughest of people. Trust me man you will more than be ready to handle yourself out in the streets.

PM users Boxer2k3 and Super_Light_Weight...they can give you some advice.
I don't care that much, just that I just got my braces off it would suck to have to get them back on or something ya know.
Its hard though because I can't find any local gyms
EDIT: I wouldn't be able to go home and copy these techniques because I don't have any equipment

If you are conscious of your looks but are still interested in boxing for defence purposes (and I guess fitness purposes also?) then you should attend some boxing gyms, see what they have to offer, perhaps pick up on the workouts they do, and go home and copy them. This way you are conditioning yourself, without receiving "unnecessary" damage... :)
i gotten a bloody nose, busted lip, fracture jaw. all from sparring. in compettion i never got a scratch. if u want to box u cant be scared of gettin hit
So I should just go to a nearby boxing gym or something and see if I like it? Have you guys ever gotten your teeth damaged or nose broken boxing?
If your worried about that, this sport is not for you. When Thomas Hearns first stepped into a boxing gym Manny Stewart put him in with a someone who was more experienced than he was and Hearns got his nose broken. You know what he did? He straightened his nose out and got back into the fight. If your worried about your looks don't even tred these waters.

how could learning how to hit harder, move faster, avoid getting hit and learning how to throw good combinations NOT help you in real life situations?
