The word really has lost all meaning. After every good fight, the winner says, "He's a true warrior" or some other bullshit like that. It's sooooo old and commonplace that it really doesn't mean anything anymore. Shane called Fernando a warrior like it was gonna make Vargas feel better. Whatever. Everybody is a warrior.
I heard CITA call Chris Byrd a warrior the other day. Listen, people, and especially you, CITA. There is a difference between a warrior and a God warrior. A BIG difference.
Arturo Gatti is a warrior
Floyd Mayweather is not a warrior
Castillo and Corrales are warriors
Byrd and Wright are not warriors
to me, you gotta take and give a lot of punches to be a warrior: therefore, to be a warrior, you must be a poor boxer and a strong fighter.
but mayweather couldnt be a boxer at all if he fought like gatti
Disagree. Anyone who can box professionally is a "warrior". Takes a lot more guts than fighting amateur, sparring in the gym for fun, or sitting in front of the TV.
I don't care about anyone that boxes on this site. It doesn't make you any more knowledgeable about boxing or sports in general than the next guy. And besides, if you were any good, you'd be boxing for money. I doubt more than 5-10 posters on this site have even made money boxing.
well i think anyone who steps in the ring is a warrior
I guarantee if Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson were trained as boxers instead of basketball players, they would be AMAZING boxers.
LOL!
i thought you were serious for a minute!
Either way Sun Tzu would call Gatti a fool for fighting the way he does. Plain and Simple.
He would applaud John Ruiz however. For finding a method of clinching to win fights.
lol... good k for that if I can give it to you
It's not that someone who uses the term "You've never boxed before, you don't know boxing." is trying to one-up you. It's that in all honesty, you see things a different way. You can attest to how it feels to be so tired you can't lift your hands. You start to study things, how so and so has their feet set.
I am a pretty good athlete. Played both high school and collegiate basketball. I've been through pretty rigorous training with pro scouts before. It was tough. And it didn't hold a match to boxing. It is, bar none, THE HARDEST thing I've ever done in my life. In basketball, you fuck up and it's 2 points. In boxing you fuck up and your getting hit upside your head. It's a different sport man.
The first day I walked out of the gym I couldn't even lift my left arm when I was leaving because of all the jabs I threw. I had to physically grab my hand with my right arm and drop it into my coat.
true!
actually even if I went past the 1st pages of links i found, I would have found more definitions. I think that one was particularly neutral and similar to the others in the page
languages change through time, and the english translation of sun tzu might be slightly different from what he meant in chinese (sure as hell he did not literally wrote "warrior" in alphabetic writing), which might be different from anything else, and so on...

Yep.
It also gets old to hear about NFL players being "sent into war on the frozen tundra".
When you get sent into war, mutha fukkers are shooting at your big ass....with real bullets....that kill you.
Actually if you read Sun Tzu books, you would see a different defenition of "Warrior".
Somewhere down the line the term was confused with Valor and Bravery.
If you were to ask Sun Tzu who's more of a "Warrior" between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Arturo Gatti....he would say Floyd.
Because he's the more clever combatant.

from princeton online dictionary
warrior = someone engaged in or experienced in warfare
in light of this definition, i think every boxer is a warrior
and as far as boxing, I think the only thing I really learned by doing is that "technique and skills" are more than staying on the outside and outboxing someone, because you are going to find someone who is taller than you at some point.
so when i read people disregarding fighters like castillo, chavez, duran as "sluggers" I immediately know that the person has never boxed and/or never watched fights carefully.
Wrong, alot of people dont take up boxing because it is HARD. You cannot play boxing like football. Ever wonder why every week you see new guys walk into the gym and never come back again? In england practically every kid has been playing soccer since they can kick a ball, you rarely meet anyone who has stuck with boxing for so long. It takes a certain breed to wanna be a fighter...not just atheletecism or skills. I know plenty of people who are naturally gifted and thought they were the real deal, they get beat up in sparring and they dont wanna know anymore about it.
Sure the likes of Jordan may have made great boxers, but really, how many people find it fun getting hit in the face?
it definitely takes a certain breed of nutcase to really want to box. i personally think that someone who sits around watching boxing film all day could know as much about boxing as a guy who actually boxes, but i think its a different kind of knowledge.
as far as this warrior thing, vargas is a warrior. he kept fighting and taking shots even with that toddler-sized abomination on his face.
but the term is starting to become overused.
I guarantee if Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson were trained as boxers instead of basketball players, they would be AMAZING boxers.
Yeah fucking right.

Whatever you say, JuicyFruit. Some 18-22 year old punk on here who boxes every day but hasn't made a buck on the sport doesn't know more than I do about boxing. No way you can convince me of that.
You can be the most athletic person in the world, but the technical boxer will make you look stupid.
the more athletic person will have more natural ability to achieve techniucal skill and will be able to imploy it much better when properly trained.
im not saying that you can just stick an athlete in the ring and make him champ. im simply saying, at least here in america, a lot of great athletes who would make good fighters just never get into it cause its not a sport most even try.
