I was just wondering...what are your guys' thoughts?? since UFC is getting more mainstream acceptance nowadays, do you think it'll become more popular then boxing in the next 10 years or so?? is there anything that can be done to make boxing remain as a top combat sport? what do you guys think?
i dont think it will. boxing has been around for 10 times longer than ufc. i am a big ufc fan i think its fun to watch, but it will never take over boxing. boxing is still big but its not mainstream. what they need to do is stop having so many PPV shows and have big fights on regular hbo, and maybe put some fights on regular TV so more people can watch the fights.
Acctually They havent been releasing there ppv numbers as of late and the Last show they had in Sacramento wasnt sold out..they gave away alot of tickets and the fans boo'd almost every fight...Plus both the participants in one of the title fights tested positive for steriods......Lets not get carried away here folks...Its the hip thing right now...UFC BRO... when the fighters start making 5 million dollar purses and It becomes and olympic sport...then we could have an argument about which is bigger....Lets remember Boxing is Huge in Germany and Russia...Plus the UK has been a buzz with hatton and Slappy Joe...I also remember American gladiators being big at one time.
it seems to be in the USA but it just maybe a fad, it's now in england and is pulling good crowds
People see boxing as a turn off as fighters dodge each other etc and UFC has'nt yet been tainted by the Don Kings and Wank Warrens, when that happens and it will then you will see a dip for the UFC
i hate to break it to you guys, but an arguement can be made thats its bigger than boxing right now.... their TV ratings are higher than boxings and their avarage PPV buys is higher than boxing(except for oscar/floyd).... and every UFC PPV has a sold out arena.... thats a strong case for saying more people are watching it right now...
I doubt it. Not enough money in it for the fighters considering the physical beating they take. And little on a world-wide scale compared to boxing. It's not an Olympic sport after all and mostly not accepted morally by the public. Boxing has the advantage of being "traditional"....
I think wat alot of people fail to realize is that Boxing will only grow with the growth of MMA...Most MMA fans and I do mean "MOST" were WWE fans...they never even watched boxing. but now that they are getting into the combat sports they will say "Hey look at those boxers wow" they can really throw hands. Too tell u the truth once the people of color and Russians start to dominate UFC alot of the fans will be turned off and might go back to WWE...Just look at the UFC fights the fans are really uneducated they dont know who dan henderson is...they dont know who WSilva is they wont know who shogun is...Time will tell how big MMA will get, but as of late with all the steroid scandals and the fighter pay...who know's if it can keep growing at the pace its been for the past 2-3 years. Boxing will always have its fan following..I consider myself a die hard fan...My life to a certain extent Revolves around the fights...I dont go out on friday and saturday nights for the most part because I hate missing the live fights...sure our fan base comes and goes also..mostly when a country has a great boxer they are more into the sport...but boxing will be here with or without MMA they will live together and one day they might even be promoted on the same cards.
UFC is more popular as of right now. I do doubt that it will ever be as established as boxing. Boxing waxes and wanes but it stays around. UFC (and I do mean UFC - MMA is only really popular in North America through this one company) is very heavily marketed but it is very much a fad right now, hence the McDojos are all teaching MMA at the moment. nine out of ten McDojos taught Karate in the 80s. Nine out of ten McDojos taught TaeKwonDo in the 90s. Now nine out of ten McDojos teach MMA.
Ten out of ten boxing gyms still teach boxing!
mma is the new way of fighting a lot of people are interested in that but if people stay in the sport of boxing and some great fighters get the sport big again than i dont think there will be a competition between both sports.
I dont think MMA can ever be as big as boxing. Im a fan of both sports, i really appreciate what the ufc/pride guys can do, but nothing in sports gets me like a big time boxing match.
The one advantage UFC has a the moment is that because of the smaller number of competitors and only one champion in each weight class, you generally always get the best guys fighting each other.
What boxing really needs is a star that transends the sport, as good as Mayweather, Barerra, Winky and the like are, none of them have the draw or crossover power of Ali, Tyson and to a lesser extent De la hoya, where the world would stop to see them fight, but rest assured there will be another and definatley within the next 10 years.
The other problem is of course the old argument of too many tittles, and the "champions" that have those tittles defending against weak opposition. What casual fan knew who Kali Meehan or Luan Kransniqi were when they fought against one of the heavyweight champions. If there was one tittle with one governing body, would these guys ever have got a shot at THE tittle. IMO If you cannot win some version of a world tittle today you CAN'T fight.
Seems like the MMA world is already bigger than boxing. I mean alot of gyms in the areas I've lived in the BJJ classes are always bigger than either Muay thai or boxing. Also I talk to people who are hardly "combat sportsfans" and they're more familiar w/ the UFC stars.
yeah out of 9 gyms here in victoria 6 of them are for MMA
What needs to happen to keep boxing alive is get rid of PPV
that cant just happen though dude. for that to happen they gotta be able to make more money than ppv revenue can provide so only way that happens is good advertising which boxing promoters cant get themselves. a big company can draw in advertisers better. if boxing gets a company then it gets good advertisers and gets on air for free to everyone.
What needs to happen to keep boxing alive is get rid of PPV
yeah that's for sure, but I got a black box so I can watch any PPV for free :D so it doesn't bother me much. Btw I'm live in B.C too
