It has been reported from phillynews.com that Bernard wants Roy's job as commentator. Does anyone think Bernard will do a good job as a HBO commentator? I am not quite sure how well he will do because from many press conference interviews I have seen, he tends to stutter a little bit and also use bad grammar.
Didn't they bring back Ray Leonard for the ESPN PPV last April? From what I could remember he didn't sound so great, or was as articulate as he used to be. That could be the reason for HBO not wanting him.
As far as having Hop goes, I'd be all for it but I could see SEVERAL conflicts arising between him and Merchant, both of whom are not shy about saying they disagree with someone. Now, I'm not saying it wouldn't be hilariously entertaining but I'm sure its something HBO has kept in mind when looking for a replacement.
Can't remember who said it but as far as having a boxer as a commentator and it helping the ratings, I think that would be irrelevant because boxing fans will watch boxing regardless, and for non fans having a boxing commentator would not be enough to put them over the top to start watching boxing.
I know that, but why isn't he doing it no more?
He still has the charisma and everything to do it..
I remember he was brodcasting on the Contender finale, I didn't find Sugar Ray to be very good at all. In my opinion, the perfect man for the job would be Antonio Tarver. He is extremely articulate and knowledgable.
He is smart, but being a commentator is about having charisma..
I'm not saying he is the best choice, but he is capable. I would pick Max Kellerman or bring back Big George.
But Tyson can make good intelligent comments on boxing. He isn't as dumb as people think. I know some broadcasters who have said the same thing. People think Mike is stupid but hes actually decently smart.

Let's remember.
George Foreman's grammar wasn't that great, either.
He made up for it with his constant arguments with Larry Merchant and his explanations that were way off.........basically he was funny.
I want him back. :(
Big George had to be loved from the minute he put his name on a whole load of plastic.

Who cares how many ups and downs Tyson has had in his career, or how much history he knows...
As a commentator, you're job is not to talk about your career or talk about stuff in the past..
You're job is to talk about the fight HAPPENING, and to make it exciting and shit and make intelligent remarks...

That just missed the point though...
Without the boxing history and knowledge and ups and downs do you think he would be able to make interesting points, observations blah blah blah??
I guess what im saying is, Tyson (with all of his career behind him) would be better than your average dude off the street who's never stepped foot in a boxing gym... because of his experience...

I think Manny P would do a much better job.

lol...
Imagine Hearns being a commentator...
That would be funny shit!
If we have to have a three man team..I'll agree as long as it's Lampley,Hearns and Barkley
I understand what you are saying, but I don't see anyone that fits that mold. Actually..I think the three man booth sucks.
I prefer the old days of Ryan/Clancy and Lampley/Wallau.
If I have to have a three man show, I want to be entertained..not enlightened by a third guy. Or a guy that insists on talking about themselves instead of what is going on in the ring. Jones' ego irritated me. Hopkins would be the same way. I'm the hugest Hagler fan in the entire world, but he was horrible as a commentator becuase he always referred to himself or how a topic would relate to him.

We need a commentator that can make intelligent remarks about the fight that is going on in front of them, Tyson is good to interview, not to have as a commentator..
