Gerald and Roy Jones often sparred in the gym and, according to Michael Moorer, Gerald would almost always have him pressed against the ropes and would be getting the better of him. When they sparred it was usually a war and, one time, Gerald couldn't eat for two days after.
That's true. But Roy got taken to the ropes and bullied by a lot of guys in sparring, including Iceman John Scully.
I don't think you'd pick Scully to beat Roy in a fight...
Mayweather got schooled by Spadafora in sparring as well.
hmm
That was the AMS...and that's exactly where Gman would go wrong. Charging at Roy would get you whalloped, and take away the good timing that Gman has. When he did that in the AMS he still barely won and was quite sore...in the pros stamina comes into play more and Gman would NOT find Roy as well as he did in the AMS as Roy was more defense and smarts in the pros than in the AMS.
hmm
The Benn that fought Eubank in 1990 was COMPLETELY DIFFERENT to the Benn that fought under Jimmy Tibbs. Benn, under Tibbs, was a counter-puncher who was always ducking and weaving under punches and never throwing wild punches.
Gerald McClellan was a slow-paced boxer-puncher from 1990 to 1994, he was rarely on the front foot and out-jabbed his opponents before planting his feet. It's just that his sense of timing/distance was so insane that he was able to find the right punch to get them out of there very early on (mostly it was his trademark left hook to body).
No counter-punching boxing verion of Benn would beat Roy. You're not going to out counter and outbox Roy. Gman had good timing on no one named Roy Jones. Roy's defense is just too good man. His reflexes allow him to see everything coming.
But everyone has their opinion and I respect yours.
i'm just going to run down some of the list

I'd also favour Mclellan against him. He beat him before, he could do it again. I reckon Mclellan's power would be too much..
But hey, it's just my opinion.
Benn would stand little chance against Roy. Eubank in his prime outclassed Benn a bit and Roy would do so further, being even harder to hit than Eubank. Two guys going to war in Benn-Gman has NO implications on what a fight with RJJ would look like.
GMan has no gas to TKO Roy that late, and he only beat Roy in the ams in a really close fight. In the AMS, Roy threw more punches and brawled more...his style was different in the pros and one tat would outlast Gman. Roy is not Julian Jackson. Roy would never let it be a war.
hmm
If anybody could find a dodgy chin it was Nigel Benn.
Too bad there was nothing to indicate Roy had a dodgy chin in his prime. Ruiz didn't hrtu him even hittin him clean so I doubt Benn would, much less find him.
RJJ UD Benn
And McClellan just gasses out and falls in love with his power too much to beat RJJ.
Darren, is that the fantasy fight issue where the writer had the opinion that James Toney would score a one-punch, mid-rounds KO of Gene Fullmer?
If so, I remember taking part in a discussion about that issue some time ago (like, 2003 or so...right after it came out) and it seems like very few agreed with a lot of their predictions in it.
yup same one i agree some of them are way off but it's a good mag
Dempsey VS Louis >>demsey launches his crushing attack, but Louis straiter punches ,faster hands ,and superior technique soon tell. Dempsey ducks under a jab to crash home a left hook in the 3rd that floors Louis. he makes the mistakeof hesitating before retreating, extending the count and giving Joe time to rise. After that ,Louis uses his jab to close Dempsey's left eye. Louis drops him with 2 jabs and a right in round 6 . Dempsey is up at 6 ,but is caught by 3 hooks and a right uppercut. he is down again, and the referee waves it off ....Louis ko 6
