Hey Yogi, what do you think of Owen Moran? He crossed the Atlantic and knocked out Battling Nelson, got a pair of draws with Abe Attell, etc. He showed some good lateral movement and American-type aggression for an English/European fighter, don't you think? I think he's under-rated (or just kind of unknown), maybe the best fighter ever to never win a title of any kind (didn't even win a British title)??
Owen Moran?
Ford, unfortuntely I haven't really spent too much time researching Moran, so I don't have a completely accurate gauge as to how good/great he may have been. I have done some reading on him, though, and I know he was extremely popular back in his day with that apparent non-stop relentless punching that he was said to have did at full speed (very aggressive, so they say). And when looking at his record one can assume he was a top-quality fighter, considering who he was in there with and who he success against (some real all-timers on there!).
I put together an extended all-time Bantamweight ranking about a year and a half ago, and if I'm remembering correctly, I did think enough of what I read about Moran to include him in the top 25 of that division. I also seem to remember McCallum's poll from some years ago that included Moran amongst the top ten greatest Bantamweights of all-time.
I've never seen Moran fight, but I can recall the fact that Mike Tyson was a big fan of watching Moran fight on film and had very high praise for his talents & aggressive style that he employed.
As for him being the best to never win the title...Hmm? I don't know if one can say that for sure, because there are those who consider his decision win over Al Delmont as being for the vacant Bantamweight title, including The Ring which has that fight listed amongst their Bantamweight title lineage. Then again, I've seen other reliable sources that don't include that fight as a title bout, so their's some confusion over that. Either or, though, I still wouldn't rank him above the likes of Sam Langford & Charley Burley in that "great contenders" category, and Moran might even get a good run for his money from somebody like Franke Burns, whose often cited as being the best Bantwamweight to have never won a world title.
P.S. Yes, Henry Cooper, of course. :)
If I could compare Roy Jone's skill to another fighter in history, it would be Ali. Why? Because he had the uncanny ability to be able to anticipate punches and roll with them instead of being hit flush.
I feel this was his ultimate downfall though. Tarver hit him flush in their second fight ( yes, his eyes WERE closed :p ) and Jones was KTFO. Same against Glenn, although I attribute that more to him just losing any faith he once had in himself. Once you break a fighter it's pretty much over for them. Not saying Tarver broke Roy, but he was definately a contributing factor.
As for the video? Kudos to you darren. It was an excellent montage of great Roy Jone's highlights for us fans to watch. Thanks again man. :boxing:
yup any more
Ok, I'll ask a rather simple one that has to do with the Heavyweight division;
There was a British Heavyweight contender from the 50's & 60's who had a identical twin brother named George...who was he?
im not good with non HV triv so if it's not Ali or Louis dont think i know
According to Harry Mullan's book it's Emile Griffith with 339, but if boxrec is at all accurate with their title fight info, Abe Attell, for one, would've had a much higher number than that.
Trivia is good!
Here's a question for you guys and it shouldn't be all that difficult...
Which former world champion is acknowledged as having the record for fighting the most rounds in championship fights over his career?
dont know it's not Joe Louis

It's always a great laugh to see the kids here react to the comments I make.
Ask yourself had Roy Jones not been the benefactor of this philanthropic network and not had them guiding his career, helping select his opponents, applying pressure to promoters and managers to accept less so Roy could have more and threatening them with not being able to appear on their network - how far would Roy Jones have made it? What if he had to fight the Eubanks, the Michalzewskis, the Benns? What if his paymasters would not have bought the fights against the Fraziers, the Lucas', the Kellys, the Harmons and the Grants? What if they had ever said "No" to Roy Jones and said that he had to fight the best there was? They never did that, and as a result this "legend" that they helped create and sell was never questioned in the ring
why do you guys keep trying this you can say the same thing for just about every fighter that ever lived...
Roy Jones. Nothing but a creation. Sorry boys.
and who are you to call jones a creation?
how many pro fights have you had?
how many championship fights have you won?
stop being an ignorant clown
